88/100SHE IS THE UNIVERSE (a bad review of gdgd men's party)Continue on AniListTrigger Warning: This show mentions r-pe in episode five and that's not really something I can just NOT talk about in the review.
~~
TL;DR/Spoiler Free version: This show seems really bad on the surface but if you like silly, raunchy, improvised humour then this is the show for you. The main three are funny, but Melody steals the show with her segments, which are always extremely clever. This show reminded me a lot of the TV short version of Hentatsu so if you like this you'll probably like that. 88/100, probably better if you don't watch episode five.
~~Plot
gdgd men's party is a TV Short about two boys, Light and Yomi, who are sucked into a JRPG and meet another boy, Alfa, who tells them they need to help him save the princess. Each 8-minute episode is split into three parts; A scripted segment of the three boys on their adventure, a scripted segment of Melody trapped in a castle, and an improvised segment of the three boys that usually contains the three voice acting over a silly animated scene.
In terms of an actual plot... well, there kind of isn't one. It's not coherent, because they only have three to four minutes each episode to actually carry the plot, so the adventure is mostly them doing something wacky in a random fantasy-esque location.
But before this show is an "Adventure" with a solid plot, it's definitely a "Comedy" and I think every single aspect of the show contributes to it. Aside from one episode we'll get to later, every segment of every episode is pretty funny, whether it be the actually clever dialogue of Melody stuck in her castle, the childish humour of Light's whole chuuni personality, or the bizarre visuals of Yomi's sweet dream.
This show does, however, have a pretty standard ending episode? They didn't give Melody a segment, instead fleshing out the "plot" segment, and it's pretty bluntly not good. Basically, Alfa decides to prank Light and Yomi after everything they've gone through by pretending to have his memory erased (by Ram and Rem from Re:Zero, for some reason) which obviously upsets Light and Yomi, but it also upset me because I hate memory erasure as a plot device in any media, even when it's faked like this.
Light and Yomi are so mad that they start trying to fight Alfa, which turns into like two minutes of chasing around Alfa and hitting him until this happens:
And it literally cuts to Today's Crystal after this which I think is supposed to be funny but after such a randomly emotional and serious scene it just... doesn't hit. At all.
Today's Princess
The first segment with Melody we get comes right after a scene in the first episode where Light and Yomi basically say "we don't want to save the princess," and her first introduction to us is this:
This immediately defies our expectations of what the "damsel in distress" should be and sets the tone for the entire rest of every "Today's Princess" segment, as she continues to go on a rant about how being stuck in this castle isn't that bad. She doesn't have to go to school, and she gets a hero to come save her! She ends the segment off by saying that the hero "better be hot," which leads into later of her segments being about her expectations for the hero.
The rest of her segments are much better if you just watch them for yourself, as the show is only an hour and a half long the whole way through, but for anyone who doesn't plan on watching gdgd men's party, here's my favourite line:
Melody, you are truly crazy, never change.
Today's Crystal
The improvised segment that was mentioned in the Plot section is called "Today's Crystal," because Yomi's crystal staff lights up and shows them... something!
They all take turns talking over the crystal, and it's definitely hit or miss. Sometimes you make one of the funniest lines of the entire show like Alfa asking Light and Yomi who are pretending to be cows if they want beef bowls:
And sometimes you're episode five and you get the main three making rape jokes for 3 minutes straight, which I won't use images of for obvious reasons.
Overall I think these segments are a really good addition, they remind me of Hentatsu which is another show I love, but they definitely fumble in some aspects and I think I would recommend anyone who watches this to just skip episode five all together.
Conclusion
I think this show has some really good points, and some really not good points. Using Hentatsu as a benchmark, which I gave a 90/100, I took one point off for the tasteless jokes in episode five, and one point off for the ending, giving gdgd men's party an 88/100.
