80/100Surprisingly awesome. Very technical about Badminton, really good animation and style.Continue on AniListHanebado! is what I call a hidden gem. No one knew about it, no one had any expectations for it, and it was released with Boku no Hero Academia S3, Shingeki no Kyojin S3, Overlord III, Banana Fish.... it got totally eclipsed and a lot of ppl didn't even tried to watch it. But in the end it was really good in my opinion.
I didn't expect anything either when I started watching it, but soon enough it became my most hyped anime each week for the new episode. I honestly though the quality of this anime would be really bad, but the music, art anmd animation is really good, I was impressed about how good the animation was.
The best thing about Hanebado! is how they focus a lot on the technical part of Badminton and how they explain every move and situation, how they change the flow of a match, how they could hit the mentality of each player, etc. We could see different play styles: strengh, strategy, control, mentality, ofensive vs defensive, talent vs hard work.
Characters were also very good and, while it is clearly focused on the female characters, there are some male characters too. The main rivals for this season are Nagisa Aragaki and Ayano Hanesaki. Aragaki is a more ofensive player that trains a lot to be better, specially after a very huge defeat on a past match vs Ayano Hanesaki, a really talented girl fro badminton everyone says has a gift. She focuses more on a defensive playstyle and it is really good at reaching every hit. Her mother is also a famous badminton player and always played with her daughter since she was a child.
There are a lot more important characters, like Riko Izumi, close friend to Aragaki wich also play badminton of the same team, and it is actually very good at teamwork.
After some stuff happens both Aragaki and Hanesaki end up in the same badminton team, and a lot of thing will happen between them and the other members of the team, as well as other members of different teams. There are a lot of cool opponents with different play styles and strategies that really makes the matches awesome to watch. The charatcer development is also really big, and will change a lot the way they approach their matches and their improvement.
I would say anyone that enjoyed the competitive feeling of Haikyuu! and their struggle to get better, would enjoy Hanebado! too, while it is not as good as Haikyuu! ofc, it is similar on how each of those approach their sport and how technical they get.

65/100Enjoyable but Overdramatic.Continue on AniListThe person you see across the net is nothing but but a reflection of yourself. Your opponent has put the same work and effort to reach till this stage. And he won't back down easily, and neither will you. That's what Hanebado! was about.....I guess. Or that is what it was hoping to be but it failed miserably.
So Hanebado starts strongly with a match between the two protagonists leaving the viewers with the question "Why do i work so hard for something". It was a match between Hanesaki Ayano and Aragaki Nagisa where the technically gifted Ayano just steams over Nagisa winning the second set 21-0. Nagisa was hugely effected by this result as she had started questioning her abilities. And to make matters more interesting, When Nagisa is in her second year of high school she gets a new junior player who enters her badminton club. And guess who? It's Ayano. Though Ayano didn't want to get into the Badminton club but was forced by her friend and the new club coach who saw a lot of potential in her. Ayano had left Badminton after the tournament in which She and Nagisa had a match due to some personal reasons. Reason which traumatized her till date and made her wonder "What do I play Badminton for". Now Hanebado continues from here to the journey for both Nagisa and Ayano to get over their traumas and find the answer to why they play badminton.
The Plot looked promising and was well portrayed at the start of the anime. A bit overdramatic but it looked like Hanebado was going to be the dark horse of this season. But then as the story progressed and we got to know more about Ayano's past , the plot started to feel overexaggerated. And then we got the Dark Ayano and though i liked that character of her, from a story stand point Hanebado was going downhill.
Though the story was pretty mediocre I still enjoyed Hanebado for i have played interschool Badminton and an anime based on the game would ofcourse arouse my interest and for the most part as far as badminton is considered hanebado was good. It sometimes went into the details of how to deal with a stronger opponent by playing at your tempo and being unpredictable. And it also showed the reality of that most of the times technique does win over passion. The Art Styles was great and I would recommend people to check out this anime just because of that too. The creators put in a lot of effort making many frames for a single scene because the matches looked fluid and smooth and were a treat to watch. The music was fine. The OP was good but nothing worth noticing. Though i would say the music did play part in overdramatizing the show.
So Overall Hanebado was an Anime for which I had high hopes for after the first few episodes but it didn't live up to them. It was Enjoyable I'll give it that but sports anime usually are enjoyable. But I might still recommend it because of the amazing work done in the match scenes where the staff must have worked their ass off to keep up such a high frames per second ratio.

85/100Being talented isn't everything, sometimes you better off working hard to be where you want to be.Continue on AniListSports anime are great but usually have a formula they like to rely on, the underdog beating the best player or team. I was interested in hanebado because it's the opposite of most sports anime. Ayano is talented at badminton, but has a weird relationship with it.Within the very first episode, the theme of talent versus hard work was established. I always wondered how would it feel to be talented at a sport and what kind of mindset it puts you in.I also really liked how the matches themselves teach you not only about the sport but how each players' playstyle reflect in their personality.
Watching hanebado aka Hanesaki's play reeled me in by answering my questions and concerns. Ayano likes badminton but when you are talented at a sport, what can you get from it? Do you play for pride, money, fame, or what drives you to keep playing? Ayano thought she had the answer, but as each episode passes by she's challenged by other players and their ideals.Ayano isn't some confident player or jerk, she's sensitive and broken. Some players dislike ayano because in their eyes, she plays in a style meant to tire you out and control the match while others think she is a monster.
Now, we as the viewer even get tested on who ayano really is because she goes through a lot on and off the court. Ayano loves badminton but constantly struggled with finding her goal playing badminton. Ayano gives us a taste of how talent really is overrated, you can be one of the best players around yet have the heaviest burden to carry. Other players on ayano's team are good at badminton because of hard work, so they can't relate to how ayano's constant struggles with the sport. Some question if they want to continue or quit playing the sport.
This anime can be dramatic, but I loved every bit of it.The drama stems from how players are constantly battle with defining their relationship with badminton and deal with their teammates. If ayano was raised like the other players or proteges, she would be just like them or worse. Everyone in the show is trying to discover and improve their style of badminton. We see how players can be controlled and influenced by peers, coaches and even their own rivals. No one wants to win by playing in a style that makes them not enjoy the match or swallowing their pride for the sake of strategy. Best part of this show is you really get to understand how it feels to be passionate at a sport and how both ends of the spectrum aren't what they are cracked up to be. If you like drama, sports and tension, I say you should check out hanebado.
