98/100Gangs, Delinquents, and Revenge? I couldn't ask for more.Continue on AniList"I don't give up!" __- Takemichi__ Gangs, Delinquents, and Revenge? I couldn't ask for more. Let's be honest here. While starting this manga, the first thing you thought was, "this reminds me of erased," consequently if you watched/read the series.^^ If not, you probably had somewhat of an equidistant expectation. Regardless of that, this manga deserves the hype it gets seeing that, during February 2020, Tokyo Revengers had over 3 million copies in distribution. The manga also won the 44th Kodansha Manga Award for the shounen category in 2020. (reminder this manga started in 2017) Therefore makes Tokyo Revengers impressive as a 2000's manga.
SYNOPSIS:
"JULY 4TH 2017. Remember that date, Naoto!! And protect your sister." - Takemichi.
Those words said by our main character Takemichi Hanagaki triggered the start of a time manipulation era for both himself and Naoto. Why? Since Takemichi's ex-girlfriend, Hinata Tachibana, and her brother Naoto Tachibana were going to die as victims due to the dispute of the gang Tokyo Manji. (Keep in mind that while reading any shounen/seinen manga, there's always something that a character does/says that triggers the fundamentals of the manga into starting.)
After telling Naoto those words, Takemichi finds himself back in his regular time regaining consciousness, with Naoto appearing and saying, "You changed my fate on July 4th, 2005. You leapt through time!!" Unforntantly, his middle school girlfriend didn't make it. Furthermore, she died, but with the help of Naoto, he can go back in time and save the love of this life, also fixing the dispute of Tokyo Manji.CHARACTERS:
The characters are the heart of any animanga as the apple is the heart of any apple juice. While I'm officially caught up to the manga, I can even-handedly say the characters are a 10/10.
Protagonist:
I've never watched/read any main character like Takemichi before. He's unique in his standards. The determination he has to help everyone is unspeakable. Even though he's weak and inefficient when it comes to physical terms, but the way he has his influential mindset, to never give up no matter what, helps him win most of his fights or draws people to desire him.- Secondary Characters/Side Characters:
Yes, the main character is extraordinary... but the side characters put me in awe!!! Why? Once you've read the manga and meet characters like Manjirou Sano, Chifuyu Matsuno, Ken Ryuuguji, you'll forget all about the main character and drool for the side characters. If we go into the depth of the secondaries, I can 100% say without being biased that the majority of the characters have received excellent character developments. For example, take Manjirou Sano, who's somewhat of a deuteragonist. At the start of the manga, he was your average vital gang member who didn't care about what's right and good moreover had emotional issues due to the loss of someone important to him. Currently around from where I'm at, he grew to be someone who could protect his companions/relatives and have solid morals while fighting his opponent. He additionally grew to be strong-minded so the passing of his beloved ones wouldn't bring him down.
- Antagonists:
Honestly, this manga did an excellent job on the antagonists because I've never hated any antagonist as much up until now. There's nothing I can say optimistic about the main antagonist (Tetta Kisaki) because he's shit end of topic. Regardless of Kisaki, there are many other antagonists that you can help but love mainly because of their backstories and developments.
- Female Characters:
Yes... I had to touch base on the female characters. Usually, when you read any animanga, people tend to look for female characters who aren't plot devices. Good news! There are absolutely no flawed female characters while reading this manga. The bad news, there are very few female characters in the manga. Regardless of that, the female characters in this are helpful and support the main characters/supporting characters progress in the manga, which is very rare while reading any animanga shounen.
- Character Designs:
I don't even have to explain for this one.
ILLUSTRATIONS:
The art for the manga isn't godly as vagabond, berserk, claymore, etc., but it's something, and when I say "something," I mean it's something immeasurable. While reading any manga, the art has the be top-notch, or you won't enjoy it regardless of how good the story is. In my perspective, Tokyo Revengers has its elegant style, but it might take readers some time to process it because it isn't the same as your ordinary shounen manga art.ENJOYMENT/ENDING:
There's a reason why Tokyo Revengers is of my favorites. Even though the manga isn't completed, I can boldly say this manga is a 9/10. While reading this manga, I've cried in different languages because of how the characters moved me. All I can say is that you should prepare yourself a box of tissue because this isn't your average sit and laugh manga.
I hope all of you enjoy this ride also ;p__Ratings__ __Story:__ 9/10 __Characters:__ 10/10 __Art:__ 10/10 __Enjoyment:__ 10/10 __Overall: 9.8/10__ 0r1h1m3
96/100Tokyo revengers is fucking amazingContinue on AniListThis series was first recommended to me by a friend of mine, and I was very sceptical at first. Shoving aside the fact that our tastes hardly ever meet, the summary of the anime just reduced my motivation to start this manga. I was never too fond of delinquent like stories, and though I liked the concept of erased, my mind couldn't fathom how tokyo revengers could, in any way, make me like edgy teen characters. But my god the author has outdone himself.
Characters:(9/10)
Personally I believe the main appeal in watching shows are it's characters. So ask me, do I like the characters in Tokyo Revengers? I fucking adore them. To start Mikey is such a badass who never fails to be the spectacularly overpowered character he is expected to be. At times he is shown to be cold, but he is also shown to deeply care for his friends, which is a trait i deeply respect. Draken is the badass sidekick who isn't a sidekick, his nickname is greek for "dragon", and he does in fact outshite that title. The villian in this story is also well written, although by no means am i fond of him. A scoundrel who managed to manipulate several overpowered characters with simply his wit and managed to counter a time traveler several time can only be called a genius. I repeat by no means do I like this character, in fact i loathe him for several reasons, but it is amazing that the writer managed to create an antagonist that is hated by everyone in the community. Most of the side characters are also amazing with Baji being my favourite, however discussing about all of them would simply take up all the space. The reason i couldn't give it a 10 is because I am not very enthusiastic about our main character, I just do not see whats so "cool" or "respectable" about him getting beaten up in every existing arc.Story:(9/10)
The story is simply jaw gripping and electrifying, with each arc being as likeable as the last if not more. They try to introduce new characters and never fail to develop them to a point where I feel it's unnatural and unnecessary for them to be there. Every death in the show would stab deep into my soul, it showed the unpredictability of the story and the absence of the notorious plot armour. I knew the aim of the story, i knew the plot or so I thought. The show leads all the way up to several different plot twists where you simply can't take anything for granted, trying to predict the story is meaningless and i think such a story that can surprise me to this extent is simply a holy grail in anime. The only complaint I have regarding the story, was the plot holes: like how did Hanagaki time travel the first time, in that timeline Naoto was dead so it wasn't logically possible for him to go back in time as there was no genuine trigger.Artstyle(10/10)
Phenomenal, from the drawing of bloodied faces to the showcasing of epic hand to hand combat, i could feel the talent the writer put into drawing each and every panel. The character designs were also superb: Draken's hairline screams drip, Mikey's looks makes me question why I lack a vagina to be his cum dump, and Emma's design finally gave me the needed motivation to restart doujins.Soundtrack(Anime only: 10/10)
The opening is a banger, like genuinely it hits me so hard I feel like im being banged, and witnessing every event being foreshadowed in it turns me into a 'Cry Baby'. The ending is so blessed with spectacular poses by the beautiful hinata merged with the fantastic ending song. The OST is pretty amazing too, especially the sound of Mikey's CB250T, hearing that gives a sense of pleasure to his comrades and the exact opposite to his enemies.Enjoyment(10/10)
Ig i enjoyed it.Overall:
Taking everything I have said into account I must rate it (48/50) in total. It is a must watch, not just for shounen fanatics and Hot boy connoisseurs but for anyone out there that is looking for a show, that is exciting, bewitching and just plain fun.~!!~~!!~obskyr
30/100Who needs time travel when the solution to everything is gang fights?Continue on AniListWho needs time travel when the solution to everything is gang fights?
Tokyo Revengers is a story with a spectacular premise… that is promptly squandered. That's what makes it so frustrating to read: it entices you with aspects that are truly unique; aspects that give you a glimpse of tremendous potential – and then devolves into run-of-the-mill shonen schlock.
The time-travel mechanic, detailed in the first few chapters, works in a novel way: Takemichi, the protagonist, can only travel exactly 12 years back in time, and from there only exactly 12 years forward again. While he's in the past, time keeps progressing in the present (with him in a comatose state), and while he's in the present time keeps progressing in the past. This means that if, say, someone dies in the present (or sometime in the last 12 years, for that matter), he can travel back and set things right – but if someone dies in the past? Well, then there's no traveling back before that and fixing it. This is a fantastic way to ensure that there still are stakes – something most other time travel stories could learn from. And indeed, a lot of the intrigue comes from there! Sadly, though, that's about the extent to which Tokyo Revengers explores its premise.
Though the manga hits a high point in around volume 3–4, with Takemichi following the central conceit of retroactively saving his girlfriend, going back in time to diagnose and tangibly solve problems – I truly felt that it was great for a few brilliant chapters there – it loses its footing afterward, and becomes an entirely different story. A palpable loop emerges: go back to the present, see that things went wrong in a different way this time, go back to the past, and… oh! There's a new rival gang, the existence of which has never been mentioned before, and conveniently enough, they're the source of all the problems this time! I guess the only thing to do is fight them. Even when the present offers an interesting plot hook – “this character grows up to be a psychopath; you need to make sure he has a better youth” – the result is invariably the same: “actually, that was all because of this new rival gang.” In this way, Tokyo Revengers deftly nullifies its own premise to become a bog-standard shonen manga where fighting the villain of the week is always the answer.
It's a terrible shame that a manga with such a stellar premise, such fantastic art, and such undeniably heart-tugging moments should falter so utterly, but falter it does. Coupled with a motley crew of other sizable blemishes – new characters keep being introduced at far too rapid a pace for you to care about them, the deuteragonists are forgotten about; barely appear through large swaths of the story and receive little to no character development, the manga's view of women is on the further end of “iffy”, and its morals are out of whack (“sure, he's a psychopath who indiscriminately beats people bloody, but he's not a bad guy!”) – Tokyo Revengers ends up being largely an exasperating, unenjoyable read.
