85/100Grotesquely beautiful and hauntingly tragicContinue on AniListThough it has Yaoi elements, I would refrain from categorizing it as BL entirely as it was by the publisher I bought it from. MADK is a horror series through and through, showcasing the deep abyss and depravity of demonic existence.
After being granted his deepest desire by the entity he summoned, Makoto's life finds its end at the hands of said demon, J. Only, he is not granted his eternal rest, for he wakes up a newly birthed demon, now at the mercy of his new master. Filled with rage and the longing for revenge, Makoto decides to play the part and become a demon strong enough to surpass even J, so that he may be the one to surpass and devour him.
~!!~
When looking at the art style, MADK is is incredibly beautiful. The drawings are detailed and, even during the most crude and cruel moments, have a very soft feel to them. There is a heavy amount of gore to be found throughout the entire series, and the attention to detail on the mangaka's side is, at times, quite jarring. Suzuri has a wonderful talent of drawing strong and loud expressions. Specifically Makoto's face throughout the series was interesting to witness, as it accompanied his descent into obsession and rise in the ranks beautifully.
At times it does become messy; during more crude scenes with multiple demons their beginnings and endings are quite hard to see, and some limbs might go missing when trying to make sense of the situation. In a way, however, it works quite well with the complete chaos and depravity displayed at that moment.Speaking of depravity, there are topics which cannot omitted from a proper review of MADK; coercion, non-consensual sexual activity and manipulation.
It is quite fitting for demons to partake in and showcase these types of behaviours, and yet they need to be talked about all the same. Every reader would know that there is no discussion to be had about the morality of them, but it is different when it comes to demons. The normalization of these elements in the demon world add another layer of characterization and establish a clear picture from the very beginning; there are no morally good or neutral demons. Each of them is more depraved and deeply evil than the next, only interested in their own gain and prosperity.
If I am allowed a personal note, I myself had no issue with reading these certain scenes. Yet for someone sensitive to these topics, or someone who is not able to stomach these quite well, I would advise to either be cautious of or not pick this manga up at all. Keeping yourself safe is the most important thing, and no piece of media is worth being distressed by.The conclusion of the story left behind a feeling of tragedy. One might hope for a happy ending, for a compromise between J and Makoto, yet those hopes are quelled quite quickly. There had never been a chance for a happy ending, no matter how glaringly obvious the love between them was.
Realizing that J's master had begun a loop which was doomed to repeat each time a new demon claims the throne of king was devastating. It is knowing that there truly had never been any other way; a student is destined to devour his master. It is knowing that Makoto's student, too, would work his way up the ranks, fall in love with his master and, at the very end, repeat the cycle of disaster which has found its way to the demon world. When a demon falls in love, he will fall apart at and be devoured by it; both metaphorically and physically. Such is their nature, and such is their destiny.
