CHICKENSAREFOREVER
From the darkness it came.
A presence most fowl. Of all the theorized ends humanity has dreamed up, not many believed in the theory that the instrument of our downfall... is the gallus gallus domesticus. Or rather, the chicken.
The chickens are the key to it all. Look at the darkness of these beasts' eyes. Look at them. From the moment they're hatched, they're already conversing with each other to begin their plots to bring about the downfall of the human race.
Now, I know what you're thinking. TGG, just because you've read a couple of series about chicken apocalypses doesn't mean the chickens are out to get you. They're just chickens. They can't hurt you.
But that's just what they want you to think.
The moment they get your guard down, that's when they'll show up. They lull you into a sense that humanity's on the top of the food chain. And sure, us non-vegetarians/vegans eat millions of chickens every year.
But there's always the chance the next chicken consumed could be the last. Perhaps the next chicken will be the one to trigger the Chicken Apocalypse. Please. Put the chicken sandwich down.
Before it's too late.
You know what, I'm actually not even hungry for a chicken sandwich anymore.
The Chicken Apocalypse
...The last chicken apocalypse manga I read and reviewed I would almost genuinely call a masterpiece. It's so fucking bizarre, unique, and genuinely contains some actual horror. Say whatever you will about that Kazuo Umezu manga, but here's something no one can deny. That manga actually had characters.
Written characters who aren't thin enough to be blown away by a breeze. And while the writing for Fourteen is quite insane itself, it's a logical and clear plot when compared to this nonsense.
Of course on paper, you would imagine this series would be pretty simple and clear cut. Like my issue with this series isn’t that it’s weird, stupid, and horribly grotesque. The immediate first chapter you have an old man biting a girl's breast off as he undergoes the metamorphosis into a chicken.
Additionally, you also have a lady trying to offer herself up sexually to the protagonist to protect her from the ongoing chicken apocalypse.
But they were still right in the middle of it. As in she comes up to him like already taking her clothes off but there's chickens everywhere and of course one shows up and brutally kills her as she's doing this. Maybe she should have started running first? But no, the creator needed an excuse to shove some nudity into the manga... and it's just... stop. Just stop.
That leads me to my main issue with this manga. Just...
...just stick to the chicken apocalypse.
There's no fixing this idea. There's no way you're gonna make a manga about a chicken apocalypse and it not be absurd. You could do it in an entertaining way, for sure. But this guy... he's just not willing to commit to anything throughout this entire manga.
Even though when you get down to it, this series is probably at least 70 to 80% the characters getting chased by giant chickens, there's just a bunch of really weird and upsetting things. That I both wish to criticize as well as ponder what the reasoning was.
Like okay, at the start, there's this weird messed up guy who comes into their orphanage or whatever to take shelter from the chicken apocalypse.
And also use kids as bait or literal human shields for the chickens. It felt like so much time was being dedicated to this fucking guy... and... the glasses character just pushes him off the building.
Right there, you could have just had him torn apart by the chickens and what he was attempting to do with the glasses character would have been accomplished. Deep down he's at least partially out for himself and might consider using others for his own survival. But rather than give that moment a chance to have any sort of impact, our actual protagonist Good Guy Mcgee immediately leaps down there to try and save him.
Even though he was being a bastard and keeping him around probably would have led directly to the deaths to the children of their orphanage. Anyways, he more or less disappears. Or rather, we don't see his death. If you don't see a character's death, that's probably because they're still alive and gonna come back later on and you should remember to be surprised when they do.
Because of course he does actually come back even though he 100% should have died. Like his whole thing was he wanted the kids for bait because he wasn't sure he could get past the chickens by himself without bait or shields, but he's just been fine this whole time? I mean yeah, I'm pretty sure he lost an arm or something but he held his own long enough to track down Conflicted Glasses Boy to get his revenge and spoilers!
He shows up in like the basement or whatever of this place that the Big Bad Chicken Man is running behind the scenes to get in the middle of Conflicted Glasses Boy and Chicken Man and Glasses Boy just ends up killing him? Actually, he's not even the one who lands the killing blow, but he does put a knife into his throat so that's something, I guess.
But no really, what the fuck was the point of that character? I wasn't anticipating his return nor I was wondering where this fucked guy from the beginning ended up. He was just a loose end the creator felt like he had to tie up even though he could have just had him torn apart by chickens when he got kicked off the roof. Him dying at that point would have been better and had more impact in relation to Glasses Boy's character.
"Wow, dude. That guy was an asshole sure but that was fucked up. And also not even necessary?"
There's so much unnecessary shit that just ends up leading to nothing or just straight up gets forgotten about. Like there's a female character who ends up joining the group and the whole time I’m just wondering when she’s going to get killed off. Not that I disliked her or anything, but I very much doubted she was gonna stay around long. She was clashing with the two male protagonists because she didn’t think all adults are horrific monsters like them, and it really seemed like at any point the mangaka was just gonna drop a shitload of chickens on her.
It wasn’t until she like found her father who chickenified but she recognized him because like five minutes before she turned to the reader and went
“I GAVE MY DAD A SPECIAL ANKLET BRACELET. THAT WOULD BE EASILY RECOGNIZABLE TO ME IF SAY HE MORPHED INTO A CHICKEN. SO I CAN HAVE THE DRAMATIC MOMENT WHERE I REALIZE A LOVED ONE HAS TURNED INTO A
ZOMBIECHICKEN.”and she had to do fulfill the trope of a character killing a loved one who’s turned. It was at that point I actually entertained the possibility that she actually might hang around? But then like right as they got back to the orphanage, everybody’s suddenly just like
“Hey! We’re accepting you as a member of the group! And guess what! We somehow found out that it’ll be your 20th birthday at midnight! So we baked you a birthday cake!”
Never mind the fact that the chicken apocalypse has already been going full blast for a while. Like okay yeah they just had the stuff to bake a birthday cake just lying around. Or fucking risked their lives to go and get it. No, it’s an absolutely necessary risk. If we can’t celebrate the birthday of a person we literally just fucking met a couple of hours ago, then the chickens win.
And then she’s all like “wow! I can’t believe you guys are accepting me as an actual character that matters! I was pretty sure I was going to be killed off by this point!”
Then that’s when midnight strikes and she turns into a fucking chicken.
“OH MY GOD I CAN’T BELIEVE IT. IT’S JUST NOT THE ASSHOLE ADULTS THAT ARE GOING TO TURN INTO CHICKENS. ONCE WE TURN TWENTY, WE’RE ALL GOING TO BE CHICKENS.”
And then this character is never brought up or mentioned ever again. All this time focused on her just goes down the fucking toilet. And even more insulting, it’s like right after this that like we get an implied time skip?
I say implied because fuck if I know what the fuck is happening in this manga. But we go from that mind shattering revelation to… everybody’s starving?Excuse me?
You fucking made a BIRTHDAY CAKE.
How much time has passed between then and now? You're really telling me the main protagonist and glasses boy couldn't fucking go and procure materials for more cakes? Who cares if there's chickens everywhere? That hasn't stopped them from going outside for even one moment. Hell, I think the most danger the protagonist was ever in throughout the whole manga was when he got stabbed by the fucked up guy from the beginning.
R e m e m b e r h i m?
So instead of raiding the close by convenience stores because they're full of chickens (so what) he instead goes somewhere else further away and that's filled with rough customers who bully him a bit and prevent him from getting much. But that's when he sees it. That's when he sees the conclusion. See, he made a mental connection and remembered something. Something very important.
Humans. Eat. Chickens.
Who cares if they've been gorging on human flesh? Or were originally human? Chicken tastes like chicken. Humans that turn into chickens are chickens therefore, they must also taste like chicken. Embrace the chicken.Remember in all the best zombie movies when the survivors resorted to eating zombies for food? This literally was just the author realizing oh hey, I can do a moral dilemma thing with them eating the chickens. Because I'm not doing zombies. I'm doing chickens.
So okay, they're gonna eat the chickens, right? Some of them are real tore up about it because they were pecking on human flesh and also they were humans, but hey... they're hungry and they need to eat. What... impact is this going to have on them? Are they going to struggle with this or...
Oh... they just eat it and... it tastes like chicken, ha ha...
That's it? That's fucking it? I mean what about that other survivor group they ran into and helped (?) and then they promised they would help them whenever they needed it. No, man. Chicken cannibalism? That's the way to go. Not even going to ask them if they have ANY food to spare? No yeah, chicken cannibalism. That's the way to go.
Because after they eat it, they're 100% fine for the rest of the manga. No more starvation and they never bring up the fact that they ate human gone chicken ever again.
...I think that's just about it? There shouldn't have been this much to talk about that is just... giant chickens killing people.
Oh, wait.
No, I forgot.
I forgot about the dead kid.Yeah, one of the kids of this little group we follow throughout the whole manga just fucking dies at a point. We of course don't see the kid die. Not that I wanted to see one of the kids die. Although, I fucking hate how these kids are drawn. And while the protagonist is obviously completely fucking rattled by this because he's talking to the kid after he sat him down at a desk and put his head on the desk...
This moment, this chapter really, should have had way more of an impact on his character. It really seems like that's what's going to happen but when you get down to it, there's still just a whole bunch of other kid characters still left and fuck if I know what any of their names were. Killing one of them off was easy as hell because despite the attempt to throw some memories of the one who died in there, there is no lasting impact.
The protagonist just further doubles down on the hero shit. And the dead kid is basically never brought up again, talked about again, or remembered after they leave the school. They abandoned his corpse to the chickens. And you know, even though he broke down and started acting nutty as he tried to process that one of the kids was dead, I still don't feel his reaction matched what he saw.
The most fucked up part about this whole thing is it could have been any of the other kids and it wouldn't have changed a single thing. Honestly, the more I think about it, it's really merciful that only one of them died considering the nature and flow of this fucking series.Five second conversation with his corpse and bam, he's back to normal and out of there. And then later at the end of the manga he just literally fucking wanders off to somewhere else so he can keep playing hero.
"Hey, random girl! I'm here to save you from the chicken menace! Because I'm a hero, haha!"
Chickenlusion. As in... as in conclusion but chicken. I'm sorry.
...Did I even mention the actual antagonist of the manga once through all of that?
I did, but very briefly. You know, the... the scientist man who turns the world into chickens? He has like a bunch of... for the lack of a better word, sex slaves in bondage gear who he has raped by human chicken hybrids? And then they... well, that's where the chickens came from....But also, they're a virus that causes all adults or those who become adults to turn into chickens??????
The creator of this manga read Monster by Naoki Urasawa and he thought, that's pretty cool. What if I do the same thing, but the surgeon does the surgery for the politician rather than doing the kid's? So the kid then dies, and the father goes absolutely batshit insane and declares THE WORLD MUST BE CHICKENS TO GET MY REVENGE.
...All jokes aside, that's the actual plot of this manga. I'm not fucking with you, that's actually it. No, for real. That's... that's what causes the chicken apocalypse. No, really.
???????????
Anyways, that's a good enough segue as anyways to go into Yousuke Suzaki's afterword. Which is honestly perhaps more interesting than the entire manga itself. Because in it... he apologizes. For essentially, the whole manga!
Granted, maybe this is just me, but it definitely feels as if he felt obligated to apologize... even if he didn't want to.For one, thank you. No genuinely, thank you. This is the first time I've received an apology for reading one of these horrible horror manga. None of the others felt the need to apologize...
...And also, you shouldn't have apologized? This was a horror manga. It was perfectly okay to make people uncomfortable. Be as grotesque as you want. I mean yeah, I absolutely didn't want to see an old man bite a girl's breasts off as he morphed into a chicken, but that was definitely a memorable way to start your series off. Not exactly a good way, but...
I mean not to bring Fourteen up again, but Kazuo Umezu crossed multiple lines and he did not give a single fuck about who he grossed out and that is why I respect that man and his chicken apocalypse manga and why I don’t respect this one.
Well, one of numerous reasons anyways. This is just trash. Admittedly perhaps entertaining trash if you already enjoy for some reason the worst the horror genre has to offer, but if you don’t have that particular affliction like I do… I would absolutely recommend staying as far away from this series as humanly possible. And since there's another much better and arguably even more insane (in a good way) chicken apocalypse anyways... this manga doesn't even have the boon of novelty. Because Kazuou Umezu already did it thirty years ago.
This particular chicken apocalypse is a 5 out of 100.
