82/100By the director of Naruto, does this "2000's run" of The Genius Bakabon stood the test of being timeless?Continue on AniListAaaah, Fujio Akatsuka, one of Japan's greatest talents from the 60s and onwards, creator of such classics as Himistu no Akko-chan (the first ever magical girl), Osomatsu-kun and the franchise we're talking about today: The Genious Bakabon
This is the 4th series of the franchise, the 2 first series being made in the 70s by TMS, and the 2 others by Pierrot in the 90s, all of them reruning frequently in Japan
the first thing that we can notice about Rerere no Tensai Bakabon is the digital artwork, which isn't that bad compared to other series of the same time, the animation stays somewhat dynamic without feeling too limited, some frames still looks great today!
However, the true question that lies in this review is if this show is funny in the first place, is it as timeless as the 1988 run of Osomatsu-kun, for example?
My answer is that it is funny, but not for everyone: its a really simple comedy, and features heavy use of repetition comedy, as well as plots found in other kids anime and cartoons of the time, like an episode where the policeman Honkan paints himself a fancy suit for his date, yet all the situations that he will encounter might reveal his secret or harm himself
Lets talk about those characters, shall we?
We got a small set of characters but a fuckton of one-offs so this will be quite easy to sum up:- You got the typical idiot dad, Bakabon's Papa, which was in his youth a genuis but is now extremely stupid, he is our main character and his stupidity usually drives the plot of the episode
- The rest of Bakabon's Papa's family, Bakabon, his equally as dumb son, Mama, her nagging wife, and Hajime, the baby who is the smartest character of the entire show
- Rerere,
our lord and saviorI mean the weird neighbor who asks if people are going out - Honkan, the Iyami of the show basically
- Unagi-Inu, a dog-eel hybrid who talks fancy
Overall the cast is really fun and flows really well with each other(yes i know, the ANN watermark sucks)
In Conclusion, its really just an anime to watch whenever you feel like watching something funny and simple, yet stylish and competent
A solid 8,2/10 for sure
you can watch it in Japanese or Spanish on Youtube! It'll be alright!
