This season's shitty hentai short wasn't actually that shitty
Every season has a shitty hentai short with a questionable premise. This season, we had Papa Datte Shitai, or, "I'm a Dad, but I want to [fuck/be fucked]" (The verbiage is not precise in Japanese like it is in English). Luckily, the premise for this one isn't an instant red flag-- a horny babysitter falling for a single dad is interesting enough to feel like a change of pace, while also being comfortably vanilla. As a gay romance between two men with a slight age gap, and with the wholesome presence of a cute little kid, Papa Datte Shitai distinguishes itself among the myriad of shitty hentai shorts that air every season.

Unfortunately, the show starts the first few episodes with a very rapey tone. In fact, the first two episodes' sex scenes are pretty much sexual assault. It was uncomfortable to watch and bothered me a lot. Rape is something I definitely do not enjoy watching, and I find it especially problematic when sexual assault is presented as just something erotic for the viewer. That said, if you're able to make it through, the rest of the show is pretty consensual. Naruse (the titular Papa) will still sometimes say "stop" or "no" as the two fuck, but ultimately that is coming from a place of internalized homophobia instead of an actual desire not to fuck Asumi (the housekeeper and babysitter of his child). While that doesn't excuse the show from its still assault-y undertones, I'll take what I can get.

Overall, I found the romance between the two to have decent progression throughout the show. It's a fairly predictable but still engaging plot- they fuck, they wonder if they actually like the other guy, they deal with some internalized homophobia, and gradually become closer with each other, rinse and repeat. Asumi is usually the aggressor, pushing Naruse's emotional boundaries, and then taking a step back when he's worried he's overstepped-- only to find that Asumi wants him to take another step closer. The addition of Ichika, Naruse's young child, adds a fun and cute element to the two's dynamic as well (and don't worry- the child is never made to be a part of the sex in any way).

The sex scenes themselves were decent I guess. I don't really know to be honest, I'm a lesbian who likes reading BL for the romance. While the hentai was obviously a big part of the show, I went into it caring more about the romance part of it and got what I came for. If you're attracted to men, Papa Datte Shitai is probably some decent porn for you. While Asumi is nearly always the top/seme/aggressive/dominant one, he and Naruse engage in a variety of sex acts throughout the show, keeping things fresh in that area.

So, basically, I would recommend this show to anyone who's interested in seeing some guy on guy romance with porn. Or porn with romance. I don't know why else you would watch this. As a hentai romance, I'd probably give it a 7/10 or so. But since this is a BL hentai, I've got to make that a 69 for the memes. As an entry on my list among all the other shows I've seen, though, I'm giving it a 5.5/10. It's a half decent BL romance for an anime, but it's also still a seasonal hentai short with off kilter animation and an unfortunate rapey beginning.
