75/100Solid romantic comedy, but not a binge friendly one.Continue on AniListEach anime season, however heavy everything else gets, in terms of what I’m watching, I do try to go with at least one romantic comedy anime. For the Winter 2020 season, the rom-com I went with was Science Fell In Love, so I Tried to Prove It.
In spite of the longwinded title, this show is not based on a Light Novel – and sadly nor does it have an abbreviated title, which makes it slightly awkward to talk about – not because of uncomfortable themes, but because the title is so damn long. For the sake of brevity, I’ll just call it Science Fell In Love.
The premise of Science Fell in Love follows a group of students at Saitama University, in an Information Science lab. When one of the students, a grad student named Ayame Himuro, confesses her feelings to fellow grad student Shinya Yukimura, Yukimura ends up getting flustered and suggests proving empirically that love exists.
Hilarity ensues from there, with each episode involving the two leads doing a romantic thing, whether it’s cooking dishes for each other, or doing a Kabe-don, or going on an actual date, but done in the context of a science experiment. During this, various other members of the lab will be roped into the experiment and end up commenting on how absurd this whole mess is. The most common commentator is Kotonoha Kanada – an undergrad researching the Travelling Salesman Problem, and who ends up being the main straight woman of the series.
Kanada is also one of our two sources of exposition on scientific concepts over the course of the series. The other is Rikekuma – a grumpy and generally onery mascot bear. The two will go on an interlude at various points in each episode to explain a scientific concept – from how to calculate the margin of error for a study, to control groups, to what particular kinds of research are – making the show actually somewhat educational.
There needs to AMVs for this show and “She Blinded Me With Science”
As it is, the comedy in Science Fell In Love generally works, being absurdist and generally not-mean spirited. There are a couple of slightly homophobic jokes, which are unfortunate. However, the biggest fault with the show’s humor is that the humor works best on an episodic basis. If you watch a bunch of episodes back to back, the joke will get old very quickly, because they’re all variations on a theme. I came into the show two episodes in and had to stop and take a break after the start of episode 2 because the jokes in the basic premise were falling flat. Coming back the next day, all of the humor landed much better. Consequently, if you watch the show, I recommend you pace yourself.

70/100Proving Science and fall in LoveContinue on AniListA dissertation/research project are the most time-consuming things a student can do and as you have the chance is chose the topic for yourself often you should try to do something that require very little to do. This lot researched love a very time-consuming subject matter so I appreciate that effort.
Fundamentally the story is setting out to see if love can be quantified into a number or data and while that is okay from an overarching plot point of view the whole time is spent quantify anything. Don’t forget about the first part of that sentence the overall plot is about quantify love and in order to do that they need to subject themselves (and others for better results) to finding out about love and this is done especially well making the whole story feel like one solid piece which is great. But the story gets a little bit carried away with this and quantifies and explains nearly everything and it’s mostly completely unnecessary. For example one explained every single detail of what happened in the episode before, while insightful it explained normal things that you would pick up in any other romance-comedy and then explain the exact same thing at least three more times (this make me feel a little stupid). During the show, a skit featuring a character ‘Rikehuma’ who is a bear takes charge and explains the science behind some of the terms (jargon) and scientific theories used in the show (shout out to Momo Asakura for some great voice acting for Rikehuma). This is a nice feature overwise a lot of the ideas the story is using is lost and an already hard to understand story would be even harder to understand (there is a couple of moments I would question whether it’s using a real theory or making it up, there are grey areas). This need to quantify everything does work as it’s building to a larger picture, but I would like it to focus more on that than stop in the middle of a episode to explain to me some random scientific theory that would be used again. I think this part of the story is nicely thought out but is done too many times during the series that dampens any final conclusion.
As it’s romantic comedy you need for the show to be funny and/or romantic while this has that is not funny and/or romantic all the time. This some from the fact is story mostly uses the same setup in both the comedy aspect by having a character perform (mainly) one gag each and they all serve a purpose in the romantic aspect too but again only a single part is used. A different way to think about it would be if a chef only cooked the same meal over and over again, they would be really good at cooking that meal but after a while you would get fed up with it. The show is the same as the ideas is uses are nice, but they just go stale or nowhere. The start is good, and the end of the show is good but it’s largely the middle is little dry. That said overall is not bad if you don’t mind a few repeated jokes and a slow romantic build-up (very slow) as the start sets up the whole show and the end takes everything in the past episodes and uses all of it to make a nice last episode. The humour is a little hard to understand as it’s using a workplace humour that given the setting (scientists) very few are going to understand it (que the explanations) that while it can be funny I think to would be better if it was toned down just a little bit. The humour biggest problem is that there is a lot of set up of a joke meaning a lot of time is spent on something with little payoff and the romance has similar problems too. When something new or different appears is really well though out (much like the whole story) but you get to a point you get to see that again and then again, which can make the more stronger moments for the romance feel lost and without and impact where in fact they had a strong impact on the whole story at large. Although the romantic elements of the show happen but oddly the show doesn’t really highlight it you have to pay attention to little things in the series to see that, so the romantic aspect is fairly solid because of that but it’s not that obvious. It’s just that while something might be good it’s unlikely to still be good after repeating it several times, but it is well thought out.
It properly goes with saying but all the main cast are scientists at Saitama University all studying in various fields all in science when one day randomly they set out to see if they could prove love. As stated above all the characters have a single gag and a role to play as the characters mainly don’t really move on from there but it works. It’s only sticks in its own world, again nothing wrong with that but during parts of the story when they are outside their own world it feels a little stereotypical (one character is presented as a villain for no reason at all). Characters play their part well but after a while they can become a bit boring and annoying, but again much like in the last section while you have is issue, they are still very well thought out and theirs some good character design.
Despite all that the series really isn’t that bad. It doesn’t standout for either the comedy or the romance (as explained above) nor it did anything differently. Due to that is a fairly solid show for every bad point there is a good point for it and because it doesn’t standout from being that different (in essence all series are different even if they are the same overall) with a solid main plot, a nice opening and ending sequence, a set of strong well-crafted characters and well thought out story and humour. It’s become a very enjoyable show to watch. But due to respective nature that starts from the first episode and it could do with a bit more romance and self-restraint when using jargon it’s a bit lost. Overall it’s a good show but not without faults.

82/100A high quality show that uses absurdity in order to achieve great comedy.Continue on AniListScience fell in love, So I tried to prove it is a bizarre title, but, through all of it's quirks, it happens to be one of the best anime that I've watched this year, solidly gaining a rating of 8/10 from me and leaving it's mark as one of my favourite shows of this year.
First, we get introduced to the two main characters, Himuro and Yukimura. These two, like almost all the characters in the show are "science-types". I personally find quite a lot of their antics and experimentation very funny as I think the show does a really good job at showing that these two definitely aren't normal, bit in a good way.
A good example of this is when instead of kissing to see if they are in love with each other, they devise an equation to find the factors of what mood is before they start. While this may be outlandish, the characters pursue this goal with while being wholly sincere and I think this is one of the things that make the show good.
Moving on to music and art, there really isn't anything I can criticise. The art is really high quality and I've had the op and ed going round in my head for days now. The ending was as good as the opening, too, which is a quality you don't see much in modern day anime.
I particularly liked the opening as it has both really good music and outstanding artwork. The artwork isn't just still images either - this impressive opening has many fluid and dynamic artwork while still managing to be upbeat and dramatic. It is my opinion that the opening of a show has a real impact on how people perceive the show as a whole and this one knocked it out the park.
Looking at some more characters we see characters such as Kanade, Inukai, Ibarada and the kind but scary teacher, Ikeda. These characters complement the main characters very well but I personally find it quite disappointing that there wasn't more focus on characters other that Himuro and Yukimura as I feel like it wouldn't have been so hard to toss the other characters a plot line every once in a while.
I would have really liked to have seen more detail paid to these other characters because in the show, it just feels like they're only there to support Himuro and Yukimura, which kinda breaks the enjoyment slightly for me, I think the show could have had one or two side story arch's that perhaps focus on the relationship between Inukai and Ibarada, or maybe a small slot focused on the teacher, Ikeda's backstory.
In conclusion, I found I enjoyed this show thoroughly and, although there were some areas in which I feel the show could have been made better, I still think that this show is well above average in almost all aspects such as art, plot, character design and development and sound. Overall I rate this 82/100, or good.
