90/100Stoats in Awe of the Hypnotic Eyes of Little GirlContinue on AniList“Who Made Me a Princess” is a present day, shoujo magnum opus. Having just completed my 3rd complete read of available chapters I was really paying attention to why this work always left such a good impression on me. A standard that others within this sub-genre should aim toward. The quality of the aesthetics of “Who Made…” are self-evident, whether that be attractive characters, gorgeous backgrounds and panelling and a cute reverence for (at times) silly, yet fashionable clothing. However, I also believe that not only presentation, but plot and general character of the story is elevated here. The cast of relevant characters is kept rather small which seems to have given the plot ample time to flesh out and contextualise each individual persona. Not to diminish just how wonderful each miniature interaction in this story is. The bouncing tonal shifts in combination with the presentation just makes each scene pop in a way that the average manhwa in this sub-genre just doesn’t. It’s hard not to have a personal stake in the story from the very beginning because of this. The momentum takes you in it’s steely jaws and just carries you forward. There is no dilly dallying for pointless side character, or extemporaneous fan service. It’s all just baked into the core of the story.
It’s all just dripping in high romance, as any fairytale should be! Not that this necessarily means it is without potential areas of irritation depending on taste. Magic has this ephemeral, nonsense quality to it. Lucas is very much the fairy god mother, who is plot designated as a possible auto-resolve button. A cynical (occasionally cunty) super-genius who always has the “logical” take and a suggestion that a flick of his wrist could solve all their problems (within some very loosely defined parameters). However, this is veto’d by the very story he exists within. Magic would be far too convenient a solution for us! Drama is what we serve. It wouldn’t be true to the emotional journey of either Athy, or even Lucus himself if it was all that easy.
Not to suggest I don’t have any reservations with “Who Made…”, which I think gets a bit slovenly around the transition from first to second season. Amnesia is really not a solution I am entirely fond of for mixing things up. The story definitely makes the most of the scenarios that this offers up though, and having past that point quite a number of chapters ago now, I feel I can forgive the designer and appreciate what they have done with the place. Seeing the transitions from anhedonic stupor to blood thirsty beasts again for Claude is also entertaining.
I would also be amiss to note that I don’t think I have seen a story (in this very specific sub-genre) give so much credence to it’s foundational premises. It has become increasingly common, with the supersaturation of these genre tropes, to simply discard the “I’m a 20-something nobody from IRL who has been reincarnated as a princess from a book, wowzers xD” and get on with the good stuff. But “Who Made…” makes a concerted effort to continue to incorporate the MCs past life into how she evaluates her relationships in her new life. Lucas is also in on the situation from the beginning, adding this extra layer of comedy to their relationship. There is even an increasingly obvious hint that there may be more going on behind the background. That the original “novel” wasn’t necessarily what it seemed.
So I am highly impressed and think “Who Made Me a Princess” takes it’s side next to “Stepmothers Marchen” as the current standouts from this sub-genre (that I am aware of). This definitely reads more typical shoujo than “Stepmothers…” though, with it’s adolescent relationships and whimsical flare. I look forward to seeing how the story ends.

90/100Even if the ending felt a bit premature, this was very good and worthy of being considered a staple of otome isekai.Continue on AniListWho Made Me a Princess is actually a lot of people's first otome isekai. This was one of the first ones I started as well, though I didn't finish it until now. And I'm glad I did.
This is one of the things that I've read that other people read recently, so we all talked about it together, and I feel like that really adds to my reading experience. (I don't think I would have as much fun watching Death Note, Ouran, or Brothers Conflict if my sister weren't right there watching them with me.) I actually even got into a heated custody battle over Athy, which was something I never thought would happen.
Now I should actually start talking about the manhwa... Our heroine is reincarnated into the story, "Lovely Princess" as Princess Athanasia. However, Athanasia isn't the "lovely princess" the story is about. That would be her half-sister, Princess Jennette who is able to win over their cold-hearted father, Claude. Athanasia on the other hand is ignored by their father until the day she is accused of harming Jennette and is executed. However, when Athanasia encounters their father earlier than she was supposed to in the book, she decides her best plan is to endear herself to him.
The story has a huge emphasis on family and the father-daughter relationship. So much of the story is about the bonds between Claude, Athy, and Jennette. It also does a good job handling an amnesia arc. When I found out there was going to be an amnesia arc, I was ready to throw hands. I was expecting some serious melodrama that existed to retread previous plot points just to keep the story going, but this actually had a purpose. I appreciated the way it helped to set up the main plot, aside from the slice of life family dynamics.
Unfortunately, I didn't feel like anything aside from the family stuff was resolved properly, and even then some of the things involving Claude and his brother wasn't utilized to its' full potential. Some of the stuff involving Claude and Anastacius' pasts was left up in the air and unexplored. In fact, the love triangle at the end isn't resolved either. I have hope for the upcoming bonus chapters to provide some more resolution, but I can't say I loved the way it ended, since there was so much story left to tell.
Athanasia, or "Athy", was an enjoyable protagonist. I felt like she was believable as a child with adult memories. It was interesting to watch her relationship with Claude grow from Athy simply trying to endear herself to him to real familial love. She has a lot of fears about being alone both from her knowledge of the original Athanasia, as well as her past life. She's really very cute and caring, if a bit cautious and unwilling to trust others.
Claude is... definitely something. He's regarded as a good ruler, despite being very cruel and merciless. Some of his heartless actions weren't explained very well, either. He doesn't care for Athy in the slightest initially, only seeming to pay attention to her out of amusement. However, as he spends time with her, he realizes how his own irrational anger towards her has blinded him. Unfortunately, he doesn't really grow in any other ways other than as a parent, though I can't fault him for that considering the events of the story.
The other characters I will mention are Athy's peers. We have Lucas, the haughty and mysterious wizard, who was one of my favorites. He's stubborn and has a big ego, but he really does care about Athy. I thought he showed a lot of personality, and I really liked the way he was written.
Ijekiel, the son of the duke who took Jennette in, was not as interesting. He and Athy had a lot of chemistry when they were younger, and I liked the way he showed compassion for his family. However, he just wasn't super memorable to me. I will say he was more interesting and plot relevant than a certain 2nd ML from another hugely popular otome isekai. (Justin Shamall from Raeliana, anyone?).
Jennette was another character who blew me away. I could really empathize with her desire for family, as well as her fears of not being accepted by her relatives. I felt so bad for her the entire time, and I'm glad that she got a happy ending, even though I wish more could have been done with her. Despite being such a good person she suffers a lot, and she is constantly being used as a puppet by the adults around her. It was sad that in the end she believed that the only reason anyone got close to her was for her status.
I just appreciated the way the characters were so well-written and engaging.
As for the art, it's mind-blowing. Athy and Jennette have the most gorgeous eyes, and Athy is super fashionable. The outfits in this manhwa are just spectacular. The male characters are drawn with just as much care as the female ones, and they are also given such extravagant outfits. The art is just so beautiful I could go on for hours.
I can understand why this is so beloved. I mean, the characters were good enough to get into a custody battle, so that should say something!

60/100A reincarnated princess and her tyrant fatherContinue on AniList[Contains spoilers].
A woman finds herself as a princess in a book who is doomed to die at the hands of her father. She tries to earn his love to change her terrible fate.
This story was okay. Not bad but not very good either. The plot was average, but of course, the art was most definitely amazing. Kudos to Spoon, the artist, for their amazing artwork.
One thing I adored was the relationship between Athanasia and her cousin, Jennette. Honestly, it's rare for me to see stories with two female characters in a manhwa that get along well and aren't always fighting over a male ? [I heard that in the web novel, Jennette was a more evil character. I'm not sure if this is true but still, I'm genuinely happy that this was changed in the manhwa version because I love her so much and would've hated it if she were a villain instead of the pure-hearted girl she is now.]
While Jennette has my heart, I, unfortunately, can not say the same for the female lead's father, Claude. He has good looks, that is indeed most obvious lol but as for personality…well that is a very different case.
He is a tyrant, and even though he has his sweet moments with the female lead to make up for his faults, I still wish his redemption arc was longer. Athanasia suffered a lot because of him and in the end, he is forgiven despite all he has done to her.
At one point in this story, there is an amnesia arc, in which Claude loses his memory, Athanasia suffers some more while trying to make him regain his forgotten memories before he kills her again, and a whole bunch of other chaos happens. This was a key moment in the manhwa, so it took place over many chapters and took up the majority of the story. A very long arc. That's why I wished the author had made Athanasia the one to lose her memories so this way Claude would have suffered instead and he would also have been the one to help her restore her memories. That would have been amazing to see and would also have maybe made him a little more likable to me.
I also want to say the Lily and Felix ship is amazing. I want to see more of them. I think the maid x knight ship is really cute although I haven't come across many stories with this trope.
Speaking of ships, since this story is mainly a father-daughter bonding relationship type of plot, romance is not the center focus. The male lead, Lucas, and Athanasia do have a few romantic scenes here and there but it's not a crucial part of the story. Their relationship is left without a proper closure at the end.
[—The second lead syndrome hit hard for this one because I thought Ijekiel was the male lead when I first started reading this, turns out I was so wrong haha. I'm still rooting for Ijekiel because he's so sweet. Maybe if not in this life, then perhaps in another life he'll finally be happy with the female lead.]
