90/100Stoats in Awe of the Hypnotic Eyes of Little GirlContinue on AniList“Who Made Me a Princess” is a present day, shoujo magnum opus. Having just completed my 3rd complete read of available chapters I was really paying attention to why this work always left such a good impression on me. A standard that others within this sub-genre should aim toward. The quality of the aesthetics of “Who Made…” are self-evident, whether that be attractive characters, gorgeous backgrounds and panelling and a cute reverence for (at times) silly, yet fashionable clothing. However, I also believe that not only presentation, but plot and general character of the story is elevated here. The cast of relevant characters is kept rather small which seems to have given the plot ample time to flesh out and contextualise each individual persona. Not to diminish just how wonderful each miniature interaction in this story is. The bouncing tonal shifts in combination with the presentation just makes each scene pop in a way that the average manhwa in this sub-genre just doesn’t. It’s hard not to have a personal stake in the story from the very beginning because of this. The momentum takes you in it’s steely jaws and just carries you forward. There is no dilly dallying for pointless side character, or extemporaneous fan service. It’s all just baked into the core of the story.
It’s all just dripping in high romance, as any fairytale should be! Not that this necessarily means it is without potential areas of irritation depending on taste. Magic has this ephemeral, nonsense quality to it. Lucas is very much the fairy god mother, who is plot designated as a possible auto-resolve button. A cynical (occasionally cunty) super-genius who always has the “logical” take and a suggestion that a flick of his wrist could solve all their problems (within some very loosely defined parameters). However, this is veto’d by the very story he exists within. Magic would be far too convenient a solution for us! Drama is what we serve. It wouldn’t be true to the emotional journey of either Athy, or even Lucus himself if it was all that easy.
Not to suggest I don’t have any reservations with “Who Made…”, which I think gets a bit slovenly around the transition from first to second season. Amnesia is really not a solution I am entirely fond of for mixing things up. The story definitely makes the most of the scenarios that this offers up though, and having past that point quite a number of chapters ago now, I feel I can forgive the designer and appreciate what they have done with the place. Seeing the transitions from anhedonic stupor to blood thirsty beasts again for Claude is also entertaining.
I would also be amiss to note that I don’t think I have seen a story (in this very specific sub-genre) give so much credence to it’s foundational premises. It has become increasingly common, with the supersaturation of these genre tropes, to simply discard the “I’m a 20-something nobody from IRL who has been reincarnated as a princess from a book, wowzers xD” and get on with the good stuff. But “Who Made…” makes a concerted effort to continue to incorporate the MCs past life into how she evaluates her relationships in her new life. Lucas is also in on the situation from the beginning, adding this extra layer of comedy to their relationship. There is even an increasingly obvious hint that there may be more going on behind the background. That the original “novel” wasn’t necessarily what it seemed.
So I am highly impressed and think “Who Made Me a Princess” takes it’s side next to “Stepmothers Marchen” as the current standouts from this sub-genre (that I am aware of). This definitely reads more typical shoujo than “Stepmothers…” though, with it’s adolescent relationships and whimsical flare. I look forward to seeing how the story ends.

60/100A reincarnated princess and her tyrant fatherContinue on AniList[Contains spoilers].
A woman finds herself as a princess in a book who is doomed to die at the hands of her father. She tries to earn his love to change her terrible fate.
This story was okay. Not bad but not very good either. The plot was average, but of course, the art was most definitely amazing. Kudos to Spoon, the artist, for their amazing artwork.
One thing I adored was the relationship between Athanasia and her cousin, Jennette. Honestly, it's rare for me to see stories with two female characters in a manhwa that get along well and aren't always fighting over a male ? [I heard that in the web novel, Jennette was a more evil character. I'm not sure if this is true but still, I'm genuinely happy that this was changed in the manhwa version because I love her so much and would've hated it if she were a villain instead of the pure-hearted girl she is now.]
While Jennette has my heart, I, unfortunately, can not say the same for the female lead's father, Claude. He has good looks, that is indeed most obvious lol but as for personality…well that is a very different case.
He is a tyrant, and even though he has his sweet moments with the female lead to make up for his faults, I still wish his redemption arc was longer. Athanasia suffered a lot because of him and in the end, he is forgiven despite all he has done to her.
At one point in this story, there is an amnesia arc, in which Claude loses his memory, Athanasia suffers some more while trying to make him regain his forgotten memories before he kills her again, and a whole bunch of other chaos happens. This was a key moment in the manhwa, so it took place over many chapters and took up the majority of the story. A very long arc. That's why I wished the author had made Athanasia the one to lose her memories so this way Claude would have suffered instead and he would also have been the one to help her restore her memories. That would have been amazing to see and would also have maybe made him a little more likable to me.
I also want to say the Lily and Felix ship is amazing. I want to see more of them. I think the maid x knight ship is really cute although I haven't come across many stories with this trope.
Speaking of ships, since this story is mainly a father-daughter bonding relationship type of plot, romance is not the center focus. The male lead, Lucas, and Athanasia do have a few romantic scenes here and there but it's not a crucial part of the story. Their relationship is left without a proper closure at the end.
[—The second lead syndrome hit hard for this one because I thought Ijekiel was the male lead when I first started reading this, turns out I was so wrong haha. I'm still rooting for Ijekiel because he's so sweet. Maybe if not in this life, then perhaps in another life he'll finally be happy with the female lead.]

90/100Best daddy's girl everContinue on AniListIn "Who Made Me a Princess," just like in many isekai titles, the female lead has the "advantage" of being reborn in a world where she already knows the "story of her life." In this case, she becomes Princess Athanasia from the book "Lovely Princess". Despite her not beeing exactly the villain of the story, she is definitely not the "lovely princess" that the title refers to. In fact, she is the renegade daughter of the great emperor Claude who ends up being executed by her own father after he believes that she has tried to harm her step-sister, Princess Jennette. With that in mind, Athanasia (or "Athy") must do everything she can to stay as far away as possible from her terrifying father and find a way to survive.
Because she knows the story of "Lovely Princess", Athy prepares a plan to avoid meeting her father on her ninth birthday (as described in the book) and strives from a young age to collect "shiny things" (gold and jewels LOL) so that she can use the money in the future. However, an unexpected encounter occurs when she is only five years old and suddenly our protagonist finds herself face to face with her executioner: her own father, Claude. Not knowing what to do, she must find a way to win the cold emperor's heart in order to spare her own life!
I must say that the initial chapters of this manhwa were absolutely captivating. The evolution of the relationship between father and daughter is incredibly thrilling, and I find myself completely absorbed, eagerly anticipating Claude's reactions to his daughter's actions as she strives to win him over.
The presence of Lucas, the Magician, brings new elements and perspectives to the story, introducing new plots and possibilities to be explored. To be honest, I was a bit confused with the addition of the magic theme in this title, but after reading a few more chapters the strangeness faded away.
For those (like me) who are crazy about romance, I must warn you in advance: the focus of this manhwa is family love, especially the relationship between father and daughter. Athy's romantic interests will only be explored in depth in the final part of the story.
And of course, I can't fail to mention: the art is wonderful. The characters' costumes are incredible and the author is heavily influenced by pop culture, which brings us very funny panels and references to works like "Alice in Wonderland" and "Swan Lake".
In conclusion, I recently completed this title and felt compelled to write a review to highly recommend it to fellow readers. I won't give away any spoilers, but get ready to be fully immersed in a story that will make you smile, sigh with passion and even bring tears to your eyes. "Who Made Me a Princess" is an amazing title, and I can't wait to dive into the upcoming side stories from the author.
