Potentially awesome but just weird
The story is kind of disappointing. This girl is full on bullied to the point it's malicious. It's really over the top and normally I'd find myself complaining about it. But it was kind of interesting in this story. I love the idea of some type of monster coming across the girl and mutating her slowly. With her having to hide it and it slowly becoming worse. Maybe eventually she learns to stay in her human form.

But in this, She just swallows a Wasp, Gains a Stinger and makes a Harem of loyal girls. The last part doesn't sound bad ( ͡° ͜ʖ ͡°) But it's really fast-paced and the horror and the transformation of the MC isn't great and is kind of boring. Again, I'm kind of sad she only got a Stinger but nothing else. I still want to see her slowly transform into a Monster that is Half Wasp/Human. Her slowly getting followers but it is lacking in any horror or excitement. It really is just a poke and it's done. I would've loved to see some of the victims trying to escape or them struggling as they start becoming loyal to the MC.

In the end, It quickly turns to shit. The Government for some reason already knows of the Wasp and that really is one of the worst parts. It ruins the horror and the story quickly becomes just a generic story with "Evil Government Men and they want control of X for more POWER!" I've seen stories like that and it's always annoying. Then for some reason, I can't understand. It starts getting into things akin to Radial Feminism. It's really quite jarring since the story wasn't good but it was solid, It had a foundation. But this is so weird. It starts saying stuff like how men are actually the inferior and that things like Evolution are wrong because for some reason women working the fields of farms while the men went out to do the hard labor was somehow wrong? I mean, For the time it actually makes sense why women were the ones to stay home. Men were the ones able to handle more physical things than women on average. This is just such a weird thing to add to a story.

I wish we instead got a more horror story about some bullied High-School girl slowly turning into something like Half-Human and Half-Wasp (PLEASE NOT IN THE STYLE OF THE FLY, WHAT HAPPENED TO YOU JEFF GOLDBLUM?!?) As she starts to become stronger and starts gaining more of an image of a Queen. I imagine the kind of gets more of a mature body with things like wings and Retractable Attenae and a normal looking jaw at first but is actually mandibles. Then things like a natural instinct to start to gain followers. Also, Have it more in a desolate area like an Island and DON'T have the government besides Police get involved. Maybe near the Climax, The Military comes in because of weird shit going on. I like to picture it as the Military in the Movie "The Mist"

Really I am just disappointed. Feel free to still give it a look but if you came in with anything like my expectations then you will probably be disappointed.

Before we even start, I just need to say I really don't know what it is about manga about insects. But this is like the fucking third I've experienced that is just...

CONTENT WARNING: THIS MANGA BEGINS WITH IMMEDIATELY WITH SOME RATHER EXTREME BULLYING. WHILE IT CEASES BEING A BULLYING MANGA RATHER QUICKLY IT STILL IS JUST RIFE WITH A HUGE AMOUNT OF NUDITY AND GORE. OH, AND THERE'S A FLASHBACK SCENE SHOWING THE CHARACTER AS A CHILD... LET'S JUST SAY IT ALMOST GOES OVER A LINE WHERE I WOULD HAVE STOPPED READING IF IT HAD PROGRESSED ANY FURTHER. BUT EVEN THEN IT'S STILL PROBABLY ONE OF THE MOST INCREDIBLY FUCKED UP THINGS I'VE WITNESSED IN A MANGA. CAUSE YOU KNOW, WHILE YOU MANAGED TO SWERVE AROUND IT, YOU STILL INCLUDED SOME PRETTY EXTREME CHILD ABUSE IN YOUR MANGA. THERE'S ALSO LITERAL TORTURE SCENES LATER ON. THEY'RE NOT EXACTLY GORY JUST... REALLY UNCOMFORTABLE. THERE'S ALSO JUST A BUNCH OF WEIRD SEXUAL STUFF THROUGHOUT THE WHOLE MANGA. AS THE WHOLE THING IS A BUNCH OF CHARACTERS ARE BASICALLY HAVING THEIR ENTIRE BRAINS REWIRED TO BE COMPLETELY SUBSERVIENT TOWARDS ONE CHARACTER AND THEY BASICALLY ALL LOVE THAT CHARACTER AND WILL DO ANYTHING FOR THAT CHARACTER. WHICH YOU KNOW, IS KIND OF FUCKING CREEPY.

This is a… I was going to call it a horror manga, but it’s not. Yet fuck if I know what other genre I would place it under.

This is an insect manga by Murata Shinya (story) and Nobuhiko Yanai (art) about a bullied girl who is forced to eat a wasp that stung her which in turn makes her grow her own stinger which if she uses to sting other females makes them grow their own and also they become subservient to her as they will be soldier wasps while she is their queen.

~~One paragraph in and that's already a huge amount of information to digest.~~

I thought this manga was just going to be like I don't know... she becomes a wasp human and then she brutally kills her bullies or something. Instead, it very quickly ceases being a bullying series.

Which honestly is something I would love more ~~horror~~ manga to try and emulate.

The creator very quickly gets it across that our protagonist Himeno has endured these sorts of experiences pretty much her whole life and the manga starts right about when the change happens, rather than taking the time to really indulge in a bunch of horrible bullying content.

...That being said, it was apparently necessary to include the information of not only was Himeno almost raped as a child by one of the men her mother brought home...

...upon running to her mom for help when she came back with the groceries, her mother responded... not exactly how Himeno expected her to. She backhanded her crying child for attempting to seduce her man and then beat her several times. And then Himeno's mom did her a real good favor by taking the iron to her face to get some of those pesky wrinkles. Wait, children don't have wrink--oh no.

If the bullying wasn't enough, I would assume this is the point where most normal and sane people who would try to read this series would end up dropping it. If you're a frequent reader of my reviews, you know I'm not a normal and sane person so I kept going.

So because she ate that wasp earlier, she herself grows a stinger. The moment she stings her former tormentors... her mom starts acting like a mom again after years of abuse, her bullies become her friends. Life is looking up for Himeno.

...But then her homeroom teacher gets the wrong idea. He interprets the fact that she's not getting bullied anymore is because her bullies are forcing her to prostitute herself after school and give them the money and thus they're finally leaving her alone. This is already a real bad misunderstanding and the only appropriate response to come from an adult is "me and the other adults are gonna help you and put a stop to this situation if that's what's really going on here. If it isn't, great. If it is, that's not okay and should be stopped immediately."

Instead, he's like "alright, how much? Let's do this right here. Not only at school but right here in my office."

...One of the reasons I do these reviews is to convince myself that some of the things I read I have actually read. That they're real manga that real people created and I didn't just have a seizure at my desk. No okay so she did have her mom iron her face, so her homeroom teacher did just try and immediately have sex with her after jumping to the absolutely wrong conclusion about her situation...

Basically, this makes Himeno flashback once more to when she was almost raped as a child and is just rightfully like FUCK THIS and stings this man to get him to stop. Unfortunately, her stinger's charm effect doesn't work on males so he starts freaking the fuck out. But then there's Himeno's ~~wasp harem~~ newly gained friends and they see to his honestly deserved death fairly quickly.

But now they have to suddenly make a murder disappear. And in doing so she basically makes a whole bunch of the female students who were questioned about her and the strange wasp into her soldiers so they would go back on what they told the police. But then the "police" return and they storm in and light the place up.

And it is just page after page of girls just getting shot in the fucking face and I'm just like what the FUCK did I sign up for here???

I very quickly found myself agreeing with the detective that Himeno is in fact kind of a monster or at the very least an entity that shouldn't be just allowed free reign. It's not really her fault that she was forced to eat a weird wasp that gave her the power to dominate all other females, but she immediately began to abuse this power. Killing the homeroom teacher, okay yeah sure, he was scummy and also saw her stinger which would have led to her probably getting dissected or worse...

But then, stinging a huge amount of the female students of the school because she both wanted to make this whole murder situation "go away" and also didn't want to risk her few new gained friends in any way... I mean that is literally putting the needs of herself and a few over the many…

To protect her friends who aren't even really her friends, they're her friends because she stung them, she stings pretty much every other girl in the school turning them into wasps. And then pretty much all of them get brutally gunned down as they attempt to take down the anti-wasp task force that was dispatched to capture the Queen. So Himeno escapes and then somehow starts reaching women who are in high positions not only in the government but also the media and stings them.

So she goes from "ah, I don't know. Maybe turning so many people into wasp mutants is a bad idea" to "I'M GOING TO MAKE EVERYONE INTO WASPS THAT'LL DO MY BIDDING TO CREATE A NEW NATION. HIMENOSPIA! A PARADISE FOR ALL FEMALES WHO ARE FINE WITH HIMENO BEING ON TOP OF SAID PARADISE."

So yeah, I turned against Himeno really quickly.

I mean honestly if the people behind the detective hadn’t wanted to harness her power and instead simply wanted to remove this massive threat to humanity, I would have been completely on their side against Himeno from the start. A person being able to just dominate the minds of a huge portion of the world doesn’t really seem like a good thing to just leave walking around. ~~Especially if you do everything within your power to piss her off like the detective did.~~

Cut to the United States of America, where there is a blond wasp queen who has Donald Trump perform naked dogeza to her.

I’m sorry, did I say Donald Trump?????? I meant Ronald Trampoline.

Honestly, this would have annoyed the absolute shit out of me in pretty much any other manga but honestly I almost want to applaud at how little of a shit this manga’s creators gave. Like oh the President of the United States of America is named so and so and he just happens to bare a resembla--no, his name is RONALD TRAMPOLINE.

The manga very well could have just ended with Himeno killing the detective and announcing that she’s going to create her own nation. We didn’t need to actually see Himenospia, we didn’t need to meet Ronald Trampoline, we didn’t need any of it. I would have probably considered it, if it had ended there, as a bad but almost entertaining sclocky gory manga. Instead, the creators decided they had more material and it just fucking flew right off the deep end.

A whole new series begins with the introduction of the best character, a girl who is allergic to kindness and will start vomiting horribly if she even sees someone being kind to someone else. Let alone to her directly.

It’s actually really smart to switch to a different character because like I said before I pretty quickly turned against Himeno in the first section of the manga. And Mizu wants to fucking murder her.

Because all of a sudden her horribly abusive mom who told a younger Mizu to her face that the only reason why she didn’t have her aborted was a whim, suddenly made her a birthday cake. The sudden change in personality was actually because Mizu’s mom was one of many who Himeno stung and thus made into a soldier.

“Oh, my mom who’s been horrible to me my whole life resulting in me being literally allergic to kindness has suddenly became a completely different person because some monster girl decided to make her own nation. But that different person isn’t my mom and I want my rotten ass whore of a mom back god damn it so I’m going to go fucking confront this wasp girl and get her to change her back or I’m going to put a knife through her throat.”

~~Following her introduction, If at any point of this manga Mizu would have died, I would have immediately dropped it on the spot.~~

And then after Mizu’s assassination attempt on Himeno fails, that’s when this other wasp queen shows up and the rest of the manga is basically Himeno’s conflict with this other queen because there can only be one queen after all. And… there are just so many batshit twists and turns and there are genuinely cool moments but it also becomes so unbelievably dumb. To the point I honestly want to applaud the creators for being willing to go that stupid with it.

Later on there’s literally a torture scene where another character poisons Himeno’s food and it’s causing her horrible diarrhea but she’s wearing this like chastity belt sort of thing to prevent her from using her stinger, and yet the rest of the manga was so stupidly entertaining to me that I honestly just want to shrug that stuff off.

~~She also gets violently whipped a whole bunch.~~

I truly cannot recall the last time I've been so invested in a manga of this... sort, while still actively being positively entertained. It wasn't just morbid curiosity, no, I genuinely wanted to see where the fuck all of this was going.

And it ended up being Ronald Trampoline launching an air raid on Tokyo and Mizu dragging definitely not the former Prime Minister of Japan who had his legs broken after the car they were in got flipped from an explosion to a fake phone booth which is actually a hidden escape tunnel.

Conclusion

...I would not call this manga good. Quite the opposite, actually. For a series to be entertainingly bad, I think it really has to keep you guessing and it needs to keep moving to do this. Because the moment it stops or stalls is the moment it’s going to stagnate. But it just kept going and twisting and crazy shit just kept happening or were introduced.

Like for one scene the wasp queen in control of America just goes "actually I have super soldiers. See, I stung a bunch of female babies and then had them trained from birth to be super soldiers and they’re fucking gigantic and armed with miniguns and just capable of grabbing a normal ordinary soldier and just slamming his head into mist against the ground like it was nothing."

AND THEY ONLY SHOWED UP FOR THAT ONE CHAPTER.

I refrained from reading this manga for so long because I really thought the start was going to be the whole thing. It’s just going to be another goddamned awful bullying manga but with an insect spin on it. But yet there was something deeper to it than that.

And it turned out to be pure fucking insanity. And if it’s one thing I think a lot more ~~horror~~ manga could use, it’s that. While it’s simultaneously deserving of a considerably lower score, I’m just unironically going to give it a 99 out of 100 and call it a day.

The entertainment Himenospia brought me truly was that great.
