Anime adaptation of Part 1 of Honzuki no Gekokujou.
When a sickly young girl suddenly becomes obsessed with inventing new things, her family and friends are all puzzled. "What has gotten into Myne?" they wondered, never dreaming that the answer is not a "What" but a "Who": Urano Motosu, a book-loving apprentice librarian who died in an earthquake in Tokyo who somehow found herself in Myne's body! And since Myne's world is still in a medieval stage, where books can only be owned by the elite, the new Myne intends to do everything she can to bring her beloved books to the masses in the time she has left.

94/100In few words "The Best Isekai of 2019"Continue on AniListAscendance of A Bookworm Review
If you have aversion towards isekai genre. I would say Ascendance of Bookworm isn't your typical isekai. Well except the character being reborn the story is far from your typical isekai you have seen. Its one its kind.
Story(9.5/10):
What is Ascendance of A Bookworm ? Its about myne a little frail girl. In her previous life.In her previous life Motosu Urano was quite a bookworm. While dying she wishes to reborn surrounded by books. But instead she gets reborn as weak little girl myne, who lives with her parents and elder sister in this medieval era town. Having all the memories of all past life all she wants is reading book. But unfortunately there's no book in her house infact books are rare and expensive in this world and only rich nobles can afford it.
But Myne won't give up so if there's no book she will make her own book. In the process she meets new friends and new people. She introduced minor technology to this world. The anime isn't rushed at all its slow paced.
Each episode is quite relaxing to watch. It feels more like a slice of life with a plot anime rather than isekai.Characters(9.5/10):
What i loved about this anime is each characters are so full of emotions and theres a element of surprises in every episodes. Each episode unfold something about a character. I love the part how Lutz and Myne relationship develops slowly. Its pure and cute. Besides main characters each other characters are written pretty well.
Animation(10/10):
I like the art style of this anime. Well the art is pretty colorful. I like the medieval european setting. Each characters looks so cute. Animation wise i give it 10/10.
Audio(8/10):
The opening theme song of this anime series is pretty well animated. Its sounds good and well it gives a little bit of glimpse about how good the anime is. Ending theme is pretty good as well.
Voice actors have done pretty good job as well. Note that i have seen this anime in English subbed.Family Friendly or Not:
Yes it does not have fan service. The story is good and slow paced so its perfect anime to watch with family and friends. So grab some popcorn and get ready to watch with your family.
Lastly, this anime is for those people who don't want any fan service and over the top you know those moments.
This anime is for those who want a nice story, pure love and bonding between characters.
In a single sentence this is a perfect blend of nice story, cute characters, moral value(obviously about books and Family).

74/100It's not an anime that will blow you away, but an anime that will make you feel safe. Make you feel at home.Continue on AniListLet me start by saying this, I'm very happy that I watched it, and I think that it is an absolutely fantastic... light novel. Probably. I've never read it. Let me explain.
The writing in this show is pretty good. Yes, there is some heavy exposition and certain plot holes which we'll talk about a little later, but overall, I just really enjoyed the story, characters, dialogues. It had a bit of a shoujo feel to it, a bit of a fairy tale even, in a sense that it is a very family friendly show. There's no fan service, no gore, not even some "scary" Disney villain. Until the very last episode there isn't even a drop of blood. It's basically a fantasy slice of life. And to be honest with you, I enjoyed this very much for a change.
At some point, I understood that I actually don't care if this story goes somewhere or not, I just want to see kids have fun, some cute family moments, some world building and lore, etc. I just wanted this show to progress at its own pace and let it do its thing.
But it's also a flawed show. And the most obvious flaw is its looks. It obviously wasn't so ugly as to stop me from watching it, but it was pretty bad. It honestly gave me the impression that I watch some flash animation. And the main reason for it is shadows. These shadows, if present, are just random and don't give a single damn about where the light is coming from. This made the picture either look flat or just wrong.
There are also shortcuts with animation. Which is, of course, inevitable, but these are a little too hard to ignore. There were scenes where the main characters would walk down the street, or talk at the market, and they would move, but everyone around them - wouldn't, as if the time just froze for them. This is very noticeable and distracting. On the plus side though, I love how tiny the children look in this show. I mean, the protagonist is supposed to be 5, so it can be easy to forget how little they are until you see some wide shot where they are just miniscule compared to everyone and everything. And as a hilarious side-note - this art style lets you know who in this anime washes hair and who doesn't.
I also enjoyed the fanart they put in the end of every episode. It's a little detail, but it's a fun one.
Music is generic. I wouldn't say it's unpleasant, and it mostly fits the show, it just sounds like someone googled "medieval music" and took the first thing they found. There's no personality behind it. I won't say that it detracts from the overall experience, it just doesn't add anything to it.
Both the sound design and voice acting were good though. Nothing extraordinary, but good. Now, let's talk about, in my opinion, best part of this show. The characters. And start with the worst. The protagonist. Myne.
Myne is the plot hole of this show. She is problematic, because oftentimes in pursue of cuteness, the author forgets logic. This supposedly clever girl, who has read a lot of books on various subject, somehow has never seen chicken meat, doesn't know that if you hit the fruit with a hammer it'll end up everywhere, that clay tablets will crack without proper heat and she stored her wooden tablets with the firewood and then was surprised that her "mother" burned them... like... what the actual fuck? Also, the typical explaination of how she knows things so far has been "I did it with my mom (in original world) before". I'm sorry, what? I would understand if she read about something and knew how to do it, but do we really need to apply so much practical knowledge to her as well? I'm sorry, I find it a bit much.
Basically, what I'm trying to say is - Senkuu she is not.She also starts the show a bit whiny, but gets better with time, so there is noticeable character growth, even if not particularly severe. She just acclimatizes to this new world better.
What I like about her, however, is the exploration of an isekai where you aren't just born in a new world (like, say, Youjo Senki) or transported into it as is (like Re:Zero and many others), but are rather put into someone else's body. And a weak body at that. I actually don't think I can remember another isekai that has done it.
This raises questions of how people around you would react to such a drastic change in someone they know, which comes with its own problems. I think it's a great idea. Now, as for the other characters... I. Love. Them. All.
Every character in this anime is endearing in some way or another.
Tuuli is great and mature, while still managing to keep some of her childishness.
Gunther is a bit hilarious, a bit cliche with his typical loving dad thing, but it's a cliche I'll gladly get behind.
Otto is just one true love! So supporting and understanding. I love that he immediately got over his pride and took Myne seriously the moment she proved that she is a capable person.
Benno scared me a bit at first, I thought he'd be our villain of the series, but no, I love him too. There's nothing bad with being pragmatic as long as you aren't a complete asshole, and he's far from it. He may in fact be the most badass character so far, actually.
And then there's Lutz, who I absolutely love despite usually hating boy characters in most of the shows. I tend to find them obnoxious and annoying, but not here. I think he's awesome. And voiced by my a great actress, who did Kobayashi and Danmachi's Finn.Pros:
- Simple, yet pleasant story
- Loveable characters
- Very relaxing experience
Cons:
- Visually, it's pretty bad. Not the worst I've ever seen, but noticeable.
- Music isn't particularly memorable
- Various plot holes and inconsistencies, primarily concerning the protagonist
You know what my favourite thing about Dr.Stone was? Not Senkuu making some life improvements. But rather Senkuu making things that made people smile. Like cotton candy. And this is what this anime has in abundance. Not so much things that will make life easier, but ones that will make it happier.
I caught myself laughing a lot during this show. Because the jokes landed, sure, but more than that - because of how sweet and heartwarming many scenes were. It's so nice, for once, to let your guard down. This show isn't trying to deceive, surprise or shock you. For the most part, what you see is what you get. And it's a very relaxing feeling. It's not an anime that will blow you away, but an anime that will make you feel safe. Make you feel at home.
