Remember Mr. & Mrs. Smith? Well, it's pretty much that with a lovely esper daughter for good measure. It is a cat and mouse game with the daughter as the puppet master.
Though this is my first encounter with this author, I must say that I'm impressed with his work. It takes quite a lot of effort to drive a story whilst also working on the art. At the moment of writing this review, there are only five chapters out; but by the first impression that I've got I can say with certainty that this has high potential for a future anime adaptation.
The premise of the story follows the elite spy codename Twilight (an war orphan raised into the job) being assigned a mission where he has to get closer to the president of a nationalistic party which threatens the peace between countries. The problem is that this target is pretty much a neet which hardly goes out. In order to get closer to him, Twilight must assume the new identity of Lloyd Folger, quickly form a cover family and enrol his ''child'' into a prestigious school attended by that extremist's son. Though the premise might sound overstretched, you'd be surprised to what lenghts real life agents went to in order to accomplish their job.The cover child Lloyd adopts is the little 6-year old girl named Anya. What he doesn't know however is that she is actually an esper capable of easily reading minds, which escaped a research lab; going from one orphanage to another. Though she knows what's going on, she is not only delighted to obtain a spy father, but she also quickly starts getting attached to him.
For plot reasons, one of the requirements for the school's admission is that the child has both parents. And so begins the search for the fake mother. Yoru Briar, codename Thorn Princess, is hitman (I guess female assassins would be a better description), living a double life as well. In a poetic coincidence, she is also an orphan with a younger brother the she had to raise since a young age. She is pressured by both peers and her brother to settle down (already being 27 years of age), eventually accepting it in order to obtain a cover story for her 'side-job'.
This whole story may sound cliché, but it has that initial catch that gets you invested in it. Not to mention that chapters tends to be quite lengthy, each feeling like an story arc of itself. In my personal opinion, the main appeal of this manga comes from the incredibly wholesome chemistry between the characters as well as the great comedy inserted in between. Coming from outside, having 3 people assume fake personas may sound unappealing; but even I was set aback when I realized how likeable they really are.
This is the type of story that you know that they will inevitably grow into their roles; eventually starting to love one another and getting in direct conflict with their work. Compared to Mr. & Mrs. Smith, where the conciliated couple took a violent stand against their employers, in this story we have Anya as a plot joker. Depending on what it is later revealed, we may end up seeing the Folger couple trying to protect their daughter from the researchers that want her back.Really good first impressions! Really looking forward to see how things will further develop.

80/100Spy X Family: Pure DelightContinue on AniListSpy X Family: Pure Delight (Spoiler free)
Catching up to Spy X Family in a short few days was the most fun and enjoyable ramp I've had for a while, so even if it's really nothing special, I am here to GUSH ABOUT IT.
(I'll save the premise, because I'll be writing this review under the conception that you've already at least read the synopsis. If you consider that a spoiler, you can dip out now.)
First and foremost, Spy X Family nails what any good slice-of-life (or just... media in general) needs to have - making the characters and their interractions instantly likable and fun. I never imagined that a spy dad, psychic kid and assasin mom dynamic would work so well. Trying to hide their powers and true identities is fun in the first place, although a bit boring in the long run, but the real cherry on top is the mind reading ability that the daughter of the family Anya possesses (Honestly, this is probably THE BEST THING about Spy X Family, come to think of it.). Her inner thoughts, her interractions with her parents are just the funniest shit, ESPECIALLY her hilarious facial expressions. (I would put an image here, but turns out you have to upload the image to some site, which I'm too lazy to do. Also getting surprised is probably better.)
Speaking of the art-
The illustrations of Spy X Family isn't the most realistic or the most out-there, but it does hit the middle ground pretty well. The artstyle is grounded in reality (most of the time anyways... Wtf is wrong this Anya's design, is she like an alien or something), but still clearly stylized. If you give me a picture that this mangaka drew, I'll probably be able to tell it apart from others. Overall the art is just very solid, and I enjoyed every panel, no matter how big or small.
Also Yor and every other woman in this manga is so hot omg-Even though I can pretty much read the characters' interractions in any situation, the scenarios this manga comes up with are all very interesting. The school Anya goes to, for example, is a great space for short, 1 chapter stories, as well as more long winded narratives within the character relationships. And the best part is, they are all fucking 7 year olds. I'm engaged in a narrative about 7 year olds. This manga is pretty good if you didn't know already.
Of course, no manga is without its flaws, and Spy X Family definitely has a few of them. Sometimes the wAcKY twists and situations the family gets itself in are pretty contrived, and some jokes didn't land for me because I'm a genre-savvy little bitch. But nothing really broke the experience for me, because I didn't expect the best plot ever in fiction, I'm just here to relax and have fun, and Spy X Family does just that. GO READ IT GODDAMNIT.

80/100Assassination by a Lethal Dose of SerotoninContinue on AniListI emerge from cryostasis to spread my filth once more! Or I got COVID and have had time to mindlessly browse and catch up on weeb-shit. I know which one I think sounds cooler.
When I was originally recommended Spy X Family via a YouTube video, I was a little suspicious of it. The premise sounds gimmicky and could easily end up being circuitous, ESPECIALLY if it ended up being long-running in shonen jump. I’m glad to say my fears are unfounded and that this has held up on a repeated viewing.
It works for really simple reasons as well – the scenarios and characters are fun and engaging, the art and panel composition strike all the balance between being clean and attractive while bleeding personality and this is all tied together with a coherent overarching narrative. Namely, adults are whack yo!
I tease, but that is ultimately the core emotional edge of this manga. Providing us with comedy and cutesy. I never saw Mr & Mrs Smith (I should be glad from the looks of it), but just observing the plot synopsis I can tell it was more suited to a film format than Spy X Family would be.
The reason? Because two assassins trying to kill each other is powerfully antagonistic with a short shelf-life of intrigue, while the antagonism on display in Spy X Family is more akin to exaggerated reality. Yor and Loid are keeping secrets from each other, rather exotic ones at that, but this is not dissimilar to most relationships IRL.
Given the relative competence of both characters at their in-universe jobs, hell, we may never have seen this other side of them if not for Anya, who functions as the deadest-of-pans to the ridiculous internal worlds of those around her.
The Esper twist to this formula is icing; but the kind that wraps around, coating the entire cake. Providing a second skin to our ever so spongy inner world. You know that sponge could function by itself, but the icing has recapitulated it’s identity and changed the flavour.
So this, eh, somewhat general East vs West, spies, assassins, espionage and an elite school narrative could have been quite interesting all by itself, but it wouldn’t have the belly laughs and possibly some of the emotional sincerity if it wasn’t for our small, cute diegetic mind revealer.
Past that, Spy X Family is a simple and easy recommend. The 62 available chapters are a gold mine for eye candy and reasons to laugh and get choked up BECAUSE THE FUCKING DOG MAN! I have also been masochistically trying to at least try every “I’m the villianess blah blah”-isekai in existence, so mumma has been GASPING for competency. Loid is also several magnitudes hotter than the “pretty boys” from those works so why do I even bother…
