  An amazing show that does justice to Mark Millar's Amazing Comic

  __[Spoiler Free]__

  Super Crooks is an adaptation of the comic by the same name created by Mark Millar and Leinil Francis Yu set in the same universe as that of Jupiter's Legacy. Directed by the director of Carole and Tuesday and animated by Bones studio, this anime has a similar kind of Animation Style and is beautiful and fluid to look at.

  The story follows a guy named Johnny Bolt, who's a crook and teams up with a gang to do their last and biggest job of their life. It has smart and amazingly done character development, not like it has very rich development but it strikes that perfect balance of what we need to know about the characters and don't waste time on what doesn't help the story. Characters stay with you till the end and take you into their world.

  Action Scenes are done pretty well as well. The chase sequences are especially breathtaking. They do have a good amount of weight behind them. The show also has nudity and romantic scenes, it will feel more like a western superhero show made in anime form, which I personally really liked.

  But the best part of it is that it is perfectly paced and the premise is pretty intelligent. The twist and turns are really good and also the witty humor is commendable. The writing has to be appreciated for that.
  Also the Voice Acting in English Dub is very good and all the voices of VAs suit their respective characters.
  Music is wonderful as well, especially the opening ALPHA by Towa Tei is something that deserves a special mention.

  It makes me wish to also have Jupiter's Legacy a similar adaptation to this.

  All in all, it is an amazing adaptation of its source material which in itself is incredible. The show is like a mixture of Great Pretender and Invincible and the final product is something that you can marvel at.

  Conclusion

  __A pretty fun action, suspense, supernatural criminal escapade which will take you on a ride into the Millarworld with it's tight and very well paced screenplay, stunning action sequences, wonderful music and witty humor. A show that I can whole heartedly recommend and gets a rating of Andy-certified Awesome.

  Super Crooks is a Netflix anime....but it doesn't suck????

  Aw shit...another netflix show.Now hear me out on this one. It actually does not suck. No its quite enjoyable,not in a guilty pleasure way like Yasuke.It legit has some good things. I think it's awesome having a goated studio like Bones get to adapt a western hero comic.I know little about hero stuff but there is a newer trend where there are more gritty and violent takes on superheroes and this show really does follow the same vein.

  STORY AND CHARACTERS
  Instead of being mostly about heroes it's about the super villains or the “super crooks’. There were comparisons made to Great Pretender with its concept, and that comparison is valid, but instead of multiple missions, there are one or two grand missions, instead of the scam artists having some code of ethics, the only rule the villains have is to not kill anyone,and instead of multiple villains,there is one villain, well there are a lot of villains,but there is one grand “antagonist”, and he is absolutely fucked in the head.I’ll admit, this show is not for everyone.This anime feels like The Boys meets Great Pretender.With visceral violent action and absurdity mixed with a carefree and refined tone.And i’m a sucker for stuff like that.Also, really cool commentary on temptation and the way of life that makes both heroes and villains no different from one another.Luckily that commentary is addressed more in a comedic way.All the characters dont have much of a tragic backstory or anything, theyre just normal people who live on the lower end of american society,so seeing them doing their villain thing is really cool.The only character who did have a sense of likeability was Kasey. She was not only hot and a badass at times, but she had actual goals she wanted to accomplish.And While I don't buy Johnny Bolt and her together, I sorta liked how his shitty actions did shed some light on why he and she are villain like in nature.

  My problem with the story of Super Crooks is that it takes a bit to get going. There are almost four episodes dedicated to set up characters, and while it's good, it could've trimmed the pacing in places especially since the getaway scene looked like something out of Spy Kids 3D. Also, the pacing is shaky in places, having fight scenes with zombies and heroes take forever to get through.And scenes explaining the evil villian corporation or whatever did lose me. Also some world building elements I dont get.Like apparently San Francisco,one of the most iconic destinations in America is lacking of heroes, and the heroes they do call for are ridiculously incompitent and end up killing civilians.But when the show gets going, it gets going.A lot of fun action scenes and very ridiculous moments.Also some moments were really dark and messed up.

  ART AND ANIMATION
  Goddamnit. Bones you done it again. This show looks so damn good, probably the best looking netflix original anime i’ve seen so far. Bones doesn't just make the animation good mostly, they add a lot of creativity to it.Using the weird powers to make some really weird and fantastic action sequences. Also, i didn't realize this till now. But Bones is really good at body horror. The violence and gore in this show is so insane and highly detailed. I even gagged a little at iit.There was one shot with this guy’s arm that looked like something out of AOT and it was so freaky and well animated.It even looked better than anything in season 4 of AOT. Yeah I said it.I find it funny how there is sex, graphic violence, and guys cursing like sailors,but they still pixelate middle fingers, very weird.The way they stylized the american locations were cool too, having a lot of spinoff brands like the CDE channel, Somy cameras, and Taco Ball.The designs in some scenes even look like a well animated western cartoon.Really awesome direction too.Im kinda shocked this show is 13 episodes, and each episode being longer than your standard anime.They were really flexible with their animation budget, especially if its coming from Netflix.

  SOUND
  The ost is weird, its like this laidback funk electronic music that never really ends,but its put in the background so much,you barely notice it.Aaaaand the Netflix dub. Its a netflix dub. It has really great voice actors,but really shitty directing.Basically most Netflix dubs in a nutshell.

  ENJOYMENT
  I honestly don’t know my rating for this one. I know Netflix gets so much shit for their anime, and rightfully so. But this one seems the most “competently done” compared to everything else.It was nowhere near as crap as I expected, it put into perspective how not good Yasuke was.It did not fully hook me at first but eventually it got me hooked. I know it might not be highly rated, some might find it boring or silly.i’m not gonna call the show shit depending on how inaccurate it is to the man-oop i mean “comic”.But it is really fun, silly characters, fucked up sense of humor, and animated by my fav studio of all time,my cup of tea for sure.

  I didnt realize this,but seeing all the heroes and guys in tight clothing reminded me a lot of MHA, made by the same studio...soooooo they’re in the same universe.CONFIRMED.

  Super Crooks, A Modern Comicbook Adaption Done Right, a Positive Review (spoiler free)

  Short summary(Spoiler Free)

  The story starts off seemingly normal through the eyes of an teenage boy outcast named Johnny Bolt who has a pipe dream of being a superhero in a world where heroes are treated as deities. Johnny quickly finds out he has superpowers and just as quickly his illusionary journey as a hero begins, him and his bestfriend Tom start staging and preparing for Johnny's miraculous path on to fame, but not everything goes as planned for Johnny.

  OP/ED and overall Music soundtrack
  
  The anime itself felt like something that would air in the early to late 1990's-2000's in a modern art style and the soundtrack reflects the older timeline the anime is set in. I truly believe the music is perfect relative to the setting and overall character groups. During my watch I felt strong nostalgia to the older superhero cartoons that would air such as Batman Beyond, The Amazing Spider-Man and so on and so forth. The OP's were catchy visually and audibly as well as fit well alongside the show itself.

  Animation

  Personally I found the animation style to be very charming and familiar yet different than what you'd expect coming out of Japan. The art style had a very western feel to it. I'm not the type to make a big deal out of animation and overall harbor a mostly positive opinion for a lot of anime that may not pass the original eye-test in animation. I found the fight scenes the anime did showcase to feel very dynamic and fluent, the enhanced movement through superpower scenes felt very fluent and well done as well as captured each superpower in a fun and engaging way. The key point I got from this amine's animation is that it captures very gruesome events in a way that doesn't have that uncomfortableness impact similarly to The Idaten Deities Know Only Peace anime. That may throw people off who desire that kind of impact in those types of scenes but I found it to be enjoyable. The final thing I'll touch on is cityscapes and landscape shots, overall I thought they were very eye-catching and easy on the eyes, I found they captured cities like New York, Miami and Chicago in stereotypical comic book styles but that made it enjoyable in my opinion.

  Characters and their Designs

  The character superhero/supervillain COSTUME design's were very charming and engaging albeit a bit cheesy but that's what they were aiming for, an old-school Superhero/Supervillain style and I loved it so much. Out of costume the characters felt very in-style and very very charming as well as modern to the time the anime is set in. I.e.:

  

  Each character felt very distinct and very different from each other which kept them so memorable and fresh in my mind throughout each episode. The relationships between characters I found as a plus each character seems to bounce off each other fluently and differently, it felt like a team that was crafted very well. The characters in this show are very diverse in many different ways and done in a way where it doesn't feel forced or disrespectful.

  Relationships

  I just wanted to add this for my own volition but in this anime there isn't a ton of romance but the story between Kacey and Johnny I felt was very good and you find yourself rooting for them in the end and for Johnny to make the right decisions.

  Voice acting(SUB)

  The voice actors that were casted for this anime I felt were perfect and voice acting work between characters felt natural and for the most part it made you feel so immersed and as if this is a real team of real people. I would make no changes to the cast and none felt annoying.

  Final Thoughts

  This anime was high octane fun, the journey had ups and downs and that helped develop the characters as much as one can in a 13 episode premier. The anime felt similar to Invincible which was a big hit over the last year. I'd recommend this anime to people who enjoy a fun high octane anime with a diverse and unique cast. I wouldn't recommend this to people who enjoy a more serious anime and look for perfection or are overanalytical or critical toward anime they desire to watch.

  MY Score: 100/100, I'm not critical toward anime negatively and usually feel very positive watching everything. I'm happy I got the opportunity to experience this work :) my score will be very different than others but it's how I feel.
