50/100a study in interpersonal implosion and self-destructionContinue on AniListokay... first of all, spoilers ahead.
second of all, the romance tag needs to be removed from this. romance does not involve psychological torture, no matter how cute the girls torturing each other are.
now that that's out of the way... i... don't know how to score this. first of all, the story isn't complete (not that that's stopped me from reviewing before lol) but i also can't read this without having a pit in my stomach. it's not traditionally enjoyable in the slightest.
the best way i can describe this story is as a study in interpersonal implosion and self-destruction. my initial reaction was "wow... this is disgusting. it can't possibly get any worse." but... it does!
it has a strange way of drawing you in... the first few chapters take airi's perspective as she goes about her daily routine, talking to her friends about any random topics that crop up, and at the end of the chapter she meets up with her "friend", hina, to abuse her in an empty classroom.
i'm not sure there's any POINT that the author is trying to make with this narrative. they do a great job of imagining disgusting scenarios that are not outside of the realm of believability. it's just hard to read something where an innocent girl is getting abused by someone she loves and not be like "yikes...". i'm not even really sure i can provide meaningful insight about it. it all just seems so cruel.
however, outside of the torture scenes, it tries to create this narrative of airi and hina being normal kids, despite their proclivity for violence and desecration. they have scarily regular conversations with their friends between these "sessions" but, without fail, they end up back together and harming each other more and more.
there are side characters who contribute to the chaos, of course. the inciting incident is, essentially, a girl just as fucked up as the protagonists finding out what they get up to in private and ending up documenting their secret meetings for her own twisted purposes. there are background characters who bully hina just because they think she takes some sick pleasure out of being bullied (which... she DOES, just from airi specifically). another side character indulges in the drama around her just because she's bored with her own life, which is obviously the least fucked up out of all of these examples but is still clearly laying out an unhealthy way of thinking.
while i'm discussing the characters, i should say i disagree with much of the feedback i have seen of them and their "arcs"... abuse is bad no matter HOW you slice it. you can't argue that the abuse airi gives to hina early on is "less bad" than the abuse that hina ends up giving to airi. they're BOTH disgusting. but i think the characters are strong... they aren't just "normal" people who have a deep secret, they're so clearly unnatural in the way they relate to the world outside of their interpersonal relationships.
in a way, it's not a bad thing to display that abusers are just human beings... abusers obviously never show themselves off to BE abusers when you meet them. they can appear as any other "normal" person, or even as a cute girl like hina or airi. it's like a warning.
it only gets bad when you try to frame what they're doing as "okay" just because it's self-contained. yes, hina is okay with airi's abuse. yes, they find each other cute and say they love each other (actually, airi NEVER says she loves hina without being forced to and is, in fact, repulsed by hina's romantic advances, at least as far into the story as i've gotten). that doesn't mean that the relationship they have is one of a couple who trust each other and are just indulging in kinks. they never discuss these patterns of behavior. hina (and now, airi) never know what they're in for before they're in the situation in which they're receiving the abuse. they just. abuse each other. it's horrific to watch them act the way they act.
the art, however, is GORGEOUS. it's overall the best thing about the manga BY FAR. it obviously gets a bit grotesque during the scenes with the abuse and torture, but it does a good job of showing what it's showing and setting the tone of the story. it can be a sweet shoujo manga one minute and a deeply disturbing psychological drama the next.
overall, i cannot say i enjoyed it AT ALL and it isn't over yet so maybe my opinion will change (though i'm pretty undecided on it either way at this point) but it is... interesting, to say the least. like a 20 car collision on a highway is interesting.
tl;dr: you're better off not reading this one if you're sensitive to rape, emetophobia, general dark themes, or child nudity (it's all in there and it's not good. steer clear.)

75/100A Yuri Tragedy that Will Make You Never Want to Fall In Love AgainContinue on AniListPreface
This review contains minor spoilers for Kitanai Kimi ga Ichiban Kawaii (KitaKawa). If you're just looking for a recommendation, I would say it's a must read for yuri fans that can handle it. The guro is only there for one chapter but it is a bit hard to read (I just skimmed it personally). Of course, it also contains sexual assault so be warned. However, after all that, this is honestly a really great story.
Also, go read 'Asago to Kase-san' or 'Adachi to Shimamura' after this because you'll need it.KitaKawa
Kitanai Kimi ga Ichiban Kawaii (KitaKawa) is the most fetishistic depressing yuri tragedy I have ever read. It is a must read for all yuri fans that can handle it. This manga will make you feel many emotions. Be sure to take a shower after reading this.
I am not a fan of tragedies. In my view, a lot of them end up leaving the story unfulfilled. The only great tragedies I've seen are 'Romeo and Juliet' and 'La La Land'. I won't say KitaKawa deserves to be there but perhaps one tier below.
It definitely fulfills its role as a tragedy very well. The ending is depressing but it's the logical end for the characters. I would have loved for Ai and Hina to get a happy ending and just save their fetishes for the bedroom but that's not this story.
Tragic Yuri (Story)
KitaKawa starts off as a story about Airi Sezaki exploring her fetishes by sexually abusing Hinako Hanamura, a girl she cultivated a friendship with for this reason. Over the course of the story their relationship develops (or perhaps regresses?) ultimately leading to them living a life where they cannot live without the other.
In the first few chapters, Airi experiments with some simple abuse; it starts off with her receiving pleasure from Hinako vomitting. Very weird and unhealthy but this isn't the worst thing. She then blindfolds Hinako and leaves her alone for a very long time. That doesn't sound too terrible, does it? However, her ideas become increasingly more and more fetishistic until she forces Hinako to pretend to be a baby and forces her to eat bugs.
This arc ultimately ending with other characters finding out about this, and socially ostracizing Airi. Airi then shuts herself in her room and becomes attached to Hinako in the same way Hinako was attached to her, due to Hinako's abuse.
Eventually, they run away together. They try to survive but Airi decides that this life is not worth living and she should kill herself. She attempts to kill herself with Hinako but she can't do it. Later, Airi asks Hinako to strangle her, which she unexpectedly does. Her feelings towards Airi are a weird mixture between love and hatred that she can't bring herself to stop. She nearly kills her but stops leaving Airi with a breath of life left. Hinako attempts to carry Airi somewhere else, so they can run away again but they ultimately succumb to the cold and die.
Over the course of the story, there are options for each character to get out of the situation they're in but they both choose to ignore it and continue down this path. After reading this story, I wasn't sure how to feel. I started typing up this review, hoping to capture the essence of how I felt; perhaps you started this review, hoping someone else did but I think that's part of the point. This manga covers uncomfortable topics that you don't really see in the fluff filled modern yuri landscape. It handles them all quite well, never glorifying it but ensuring to show the horror of it all, of how the abused can become abusers.
It does a great job at making the reader empathize with these characters, even at their lowest points. Even though I knew that these people weren't good, I just wanted them to sort their issues out but they didn't and ultimately met their demise for it.
There's a part in the story where you go from being completely disgusted with these characters to feeling pity and sorrow for them. And, at the end, you want them to be happy but they can't be happy and that's ultimately because they love each other. If they didn't have each other, they would have probably not met their end, but because they did, they died. I find that to be a very interesting take on obsessive love.Beautiful Abuse (Art)
All that being said this is the best art direction I have ever seen in a yuri series, by far. The character designs are all perfect. The guro is drawn horrifically well. The cover art is ridiculously beautiful; it perfectly fits the story, with the watercolor blotches, the mosaic censorship, the fetishistic smile on Airi's face, and Hina's half-hearted attempt to hold her hand off.
Airi's design is a perfect allusion to other contemporary yuri with a 'long black haired, cool, assertive' character that has issues. Hina's design is almost angelic; she seems so innocent, especially with the clothes the author draws on her, perfectly fitting the tone of the story.
The important side characters also have great designs. Ichika, in particular, fits the whole idea of an attention with its obsession on cuteness. The abuse chapters are very well drawn and succeeded in making me extremely uncomfortable. They show the dread that Hinako feels during the abuse and the ultimate joy that she gets when she's comforted by Airi, with the lighting and colors. The chapters depicting sex are also quite well drawn; those depict Hinako's abuse and obsession over Airi well. I like how quickly it shows Hinako becoming the abuser and in control, as if she always wanted to do this or had the power to do this, making the final strangling scene make more sense.
Overall
KitaKawa is a divisive work; if you look at the scores, there's an even amount in almost all of the ratings.
Of course, this is due to the uncomfortable topics it tackles. However, I fundamentally believe this work is a hidden gem under all of that if you can handle it.Zaiaza
6/100The authors poorly disguised fetishes trying to pretend it's deepContinue on AniListHoo boy where do I start? First off I have nothing wrong with darker nor disgusting themes in media. Let alone Yuri or 'romance' manga. I could easily say I've read quite a few of them. However this manga just is poorly disguised fetishes with a lackluster plot.
You can argue how "deep" it is and if you felt that way fine. But I felt it was a poorly rushed story mixed with half baked plotlines. Using shock value as an excuse for it's gross themes. The semi decent parts are the role reversals and slight character study, but even then you can argue they don't evolve enough. Plot points happen at a whiplash pace and characters change on a poorly done dime. While I enjoyed some aspects, the overall fetishistic nature of the manga will leave you questioning if what you read was just straight up porn. Truthfully I'd take a good hard look at yourself and question if this is even worth reading.
If you can stomach it you'll find yourself lacking any real resolution, if you can't you're not missing much. The only good argument that can be made is the art is very well done. It's clearly a talented artist, but that artist is into some fucked up shit.
If I could say anything id argue the artist's hard drive should be looked into but I'm not exactly sure it'd shock anyone. You can't really create work that specifically caters to a group of people then dance around that said issue. This manga caters to men who like children plain and simple. It's not made for anyone but that.
From gross diaper play, puke, urine, and multiple SA scenes, all of which create an uncomfortable environment. Reading this manga made me feel dirty. Not in a good way. Many manga can address such darker themes with appropriate writing. Heck manga with even grosser themes and more poorly done fetishes have appealed to me. This one was just written like someone was incorporating way too many fetishes to count.
I won't be returning to read it. I wouldn't recommend it to anyone even if you enjoy darker manga. If your curiosity is peaked you're going to find yourself lacking any enjoyment. It's not worth the time I spent and I'll probably never re-read it. While I will not dismiss the people who possibly got something out of this hellscape I will suggest you maybe look inward as to why you enjoyed it so much. Ask yourself "is this really deep? Or am I just 16." The answer may shock you.
I just suggest you avoid it like the plague. Unfortunately people have continued to boast about this manga like it's truly the next great, and instead of dismissing it. Sure you can grab a screen cap and smack it up pretending it's great and deep. But just because you give your characters some lackluster backstory there comes no surprise when the ending is rushed and poorly done.
