100/100A villainess series that blew my expectations out of the water, easily becoming my favorite of the genre.Continue on AniListThis is the second part of my Yeni otome isekai tribute. I won't be able to speak with her for a long while, so I think it's fitting that I read her favorite manga as she disappeared for the second time. I will definitely be reading more of her favorites to come, and I look forward to meeting her again. I may have lost touch with a friend, but I gained a new favorite, which isn't exactly equivalent exchange, but I will have to live with that for now.
Anyways, Endo and Kobayashi Live! The Latest on Tsundere Villainess Liselotte begins with Endo and Kobayashi. They're a couple of Japanese teenagers who decide to play the otome game Magikoi, and offering commentary comes naturally to the duo. Kobayashi in particular has played the game before and wants to avoid as many character deaths as possible. However, Prince Siegward, one of the love interests in the game can hear their commentary. The duo decide to use this to set him up with the tragic villainess Liselotte who is in love with him (in addition to being a major tsundere), as well as to lead the characters to the ending they want. However, with every change these high schoolers commentary brings to the plot, the more and more the game itself seems to change.
This is my favorite otome isekai to date. I'm officially obsessed. I think the plot is super unique, and I am very curious about how the game world and the real world are connected. I want to know why Siegward can hear the voices of Kobayashi and Endo, as well as why the duo has a such a strong influence on the world. I want to know what the lore behind the witch is, and why she's so obsessed with Liselotte. There's so much mystery, and I feel like it's more than just a meta rom-com. The series draws you in with comedic antics and various couples to cheer for, but it surprises you with its' complex plot. I genuinely have no idea what direction it's going to take. (I'm going to say that I will riot if it breaks up my ship. I like Finne's current love interest, thank you very much.)
I was shocked with the amount of depth the characters had, and the way the relationships were written were really interesting. Kobayashi and Siegward were the characters who I think got the least amount of intense character focus, but I have hope that they will be developed a lot more, especially since the series is only 24 chapters currently.
Our commentary duo has a backstory together. Kobayashi has been able to help Endo through some tough times when he thought his most important thing was gone forever. Her support and never-ending positivity kept him going and helped him to get back on his feet. As a result he has a little crush on her. I just wish we got to see more of Kobayashi's perspective and side of the relationship, just because I don't know why she likes Endo so much, aside from their very comfortable friendship. They do have a lovely dynamic and behave like real friends do, even friends with a one-sided crush in the mix.
Liselotte is definitely a tsundere. However, she is not exactly what you picture when you hear that word. Liselotte has a hard time properly expressing her feelings, especially when she's nervous. As a result, she comes off as very mean, condescending, and stand-offish. Many people mistake her for a bully at first glance. However, she genuinely is a sweet person, who means well. She was taught to hide her feelings and gets overwhelmed when she is overcome by a lot of emotions (cue the most intense blushing I've ever seen). Liselotte is also laden with a lot of insecurities. I found her to be a very human and even relatable character. Siegward on the other hand has to work on being a bit distant. His parents' lesson in avoiding favoritism for the sake of peace has lead him to have difficulties expressing extra-affection to the one he loves. He's also very sweet, and he's so helpful.
I was actually surprised that I loved the character who is the female lead in the game. I feel like in the otome isekai stories I read, the original female lead usually becomes an antagonist or just an admirer of the female lead without much substance. Finne is neither of those things. She plays a major part in the story (as to be expected, since the characters are playing from her perspective). She and Liselotte stand on equal footing. She's very kind, naive, and has an unconventional upbringing, in addition to being perhaps one of the strongest characters in the series. I really enjoyed watching her relationship with Baru, the man who dies for her in the game. The two of them actually begin to develop such a cute, stable, and balanced relationship. He has his future decided for him, but he wants to break away from it and choose his own path.
I know the character descriptions were unbalanced, but I really, really love Finne and Liselotte. XD
The art is gorgeous. I love the way the outfits and the eyes are drawn. Everyone has a really beautiful and distinct design. I also love the way the characters eyes look. On top of that, the reaction faces are absolutely adorable. I love it when Finne's eyes just turn into two lines, like those smiley faces we drew as kids. (I'd attach images if I had the energy to find and crop one, but alas, I do not have the motivation.)
Long story short, I fell in love with this series, and I'm so excited for the anime. The story and the characters surprised me and blew far and beyond my expectations. If you want a villainess series that takes things in a unique and interesting direction, read this. You won't regret it. I love this series so much for a reason.
