74/100Something to drink tea tooContinue on AniListWhen you opened this review, a few questions might have passed through your mind. “What anime is this?” for the curious fellers innocently scrolling through the Home page. What’s this anime about? What makes this good? What makes this bad? What drove the writer to creating this review? Well my dudes and dudettes,
Now when I say that this image perfectly encompasses everything this anime has to offer, I’m being serious. This image alone is everything this anime is built upon, everything this anime believes and strives to become. This image is the anime. This anime is this image.
Each episode, or “case file” I should say, follows a similar format as the first one.
A client comes in with a jewel to be appraised but there’s something very.. hmm.. mysterious about them wink wink. (These “mysteries” however often stem from the client’s personal situation and are only loosely related to the jewel itself.) Everytime the client comes in we get more information about their mysterious situation. Often we see the client in public and talk more about their mysterious situation. Throughout the episode more people related to the situation appear and talk about the situation. Sometimes we even get advice from our friends as we talk about the situation. In the end, everybody sits down, has a cup of tea, a nice desert, and, you guessed it, fucking talks about the situation till we finally understand what the fuck is going on.
Now despite how I worded that, I do not say this with malice. In fact that is the beauty of this anime. It does not strive to be more than it is. It does not appear to be more than it is. The Case Files of Jeweler Richard is just, is.
It’s simplicity in fact, does not make it boring. This anime is charming in its own way and that's purely carried by the characters it portrays. Even beyond our main protagonists, each client and case that comes in is intriguing on its own. Their stories often deal with emotions and troubles in character relationships. They come with fun times but often insight heavy self-reflection. In the end these clients are given closure, but they don’t leave stagnant, but often with motivations that lead to action. That once off screen you know they're actually doing things to better themselves.
Almost every character has enough story and motivation to literally be their own main character and I find that interesting. It doesn’t hurt that we also get some cool facts about gems along the way.And let’s not forget our main protagonists. While Seigi and Richard both have different personalities, they build off each other very well. You see them learn and often depend on each other, giving the other support when needed. Even when they get into hijinks and situations they have this compatibility that allows them to work well together and further strengthen their relationship. They’re half mentor/student, half bromance relationship is interesting and one of the driving forces of this anime is seeing how it develops.
However, this anime, like many, does have its own flaws. I found the setting to be lacking and the story at times can have a weird flow. But it's not enough to hinder the overall enjoyment.
Pointedly, there really isn't a lot of... action that happens. Like I said earlier, a lot of this show is just people sitting down and talking. But I feel that what they do talk about makes up for it.
In conclusion, The Case Files of Jeweler Richard is what I like to call, a chill watch. Not enough emotional investment or consequence to keep you on your toes, but not too simple or boring that you're practically falling asleep. Something you can take your time watching. Sit down, maybe with a cup of tea, and just enjoy.

50/100The original novel out stands the animationContinue on AniListThis is a great book and series to the title, The light novel must be read first before starting anime to completely understand full chapters as episodes to the animated adaption has cut details 80% shorter and has changed certain focal points in each episodes story compared to chapter, the stories represented in each episode are not fully accurate to the book. In other words if you watch the anime first you'll just get a misunderstood rating and not actually know what the series is about if you have no idea of the detail the novel brings. If you love to read 200 page novels with lots of detail to character and story then reading the novel first before the titles anime adaptation is recommended.
The anime adaption is only for fans that would like to see animation version but if you want more understanding and in depth story? Read novel first before leaving an ugly misjudgement. The series is great, i understand that this is a niche title and the production decided to leave out a lot of details considering you cant fit a 50 page chapter in a 19 minute video and per episode has been ended up rupt. This by no means is for newcomers this is just an animated version but not an accurate, full description depiction of what the real events was told. The book is brilliant i have read all volumes and the book is now published in English by seven seas originally the Novel was published between 2015-2016 but has finally got an official publication of translation, The book compared to this animated series portrays what the Characters really think and respond to these events, as for the anime it does look like there lack of side characters in related to the importance of those chapters to the stories and dialogue in comparison based on the original title that describes the every characters personalities in more detail.
Seigi is very hyperactive in his feelings towards his experiences in the book, spoiler alert he shows hes very attracted to Richard as his employer but the dialogue sounds very written as if he could be bisexual and attracted to Richard if he didnt have Tanimoto in his life but the reality is besides the writer trying to sweep off our feet Seigi doesn't cheat on people hes too honest and sticks his nose in everyone's buisiness. but none of those kind of details will be shown in this Anime, please read the book first. The book is a niche title but i found it very pleasant to read, each chapter captured a simple but elegant imagination, actually educates the reader more about Jewerly and gemstones in real life and that there are locations in Ginza if you do travel to Japan to actually check out those department stores. It is a bit slice of life but not an ordinary title you will come across. I think the title deserves more credit, unfortunately those that are un familair of the lack of detail with animation adaptions exposed to novel releases will just confuse those that have never heard the title to brush this off as bad, yes the Animation looks bad and does not justify the original truly but if you are a fan will that matter? You already know what the original is about you just want to see the main characters look animated, if it didn't have an original adaption to a novel. Then i would be worried scrambling to see why it seems out of place.
