95/1009.5/10 story with great plot and characters. Comedy 10/10. Some slight romance and shuojo ai too. Enjoy!Continue on AniListBeware the villainess - Bakarina but about 100x better As every review goes, I will be breaking this review down into a couple parts.
- Plot
- Characters
- Execution
- Conclusion
This is my first review so don't mind if the language sounds more casual that it should.
Plot:
9/10
This one is a pretty cliché plot. It's partly tried and tested. You might be wondering “if the plot is cliché, why rate it 9/10?”
Well, that's because the way the author shaped the plot in the particular webtoon. The first few scenes remind you of bakarina which started out great but slowly devolved into a generic mess of a story. Hell, this story even has multiple references to bakarina.
The plot goes like this:
There was a full time nerdy girl who died and reincarnated into a novel she read. Nothing new. Except, she is the villainess who is really cruel on the outside. Our female MC doesn't care about the story tho. She just wants to chill and live life without going the wrong route. OFC the moment she opens her eyes in the new world, the Crown prince the villainess originally loved is cheating on her. MC doesn't give 2 shits since she is a different person. Totally requests a break up! (lol) This leads into a series of roller coaster rides including so various characters that really make you want to invest in the story.
What sets this story apart from the rest of the fish market is the comedy and the characters. The main character is a female who is badass. And I mean it when I say badass. She is COOL AF. We will get into that in characters later though. The plot itself isn't anything new. But, you have to read this if you are a fan of comedy. I was tearing up laughing because of this webtoon. Once you read the first 5 chapters, you would understand. Other parts of the story that assist the 9/10 rating is the pacing which isn't too slow or too fast, the dynamic setting changes, memes and the Slight YURI :)
The reason why it got a 9/10 instead of a full 10 is because this story ALSO has too many ways it can devolve into something generic like bakarina.Characters:
8.5/10The characters... ah hell yea. The characters are so dynamic and cool it's great. There are mainly 3 characters on the female MC side of things and 4 Male Antagonists
- The female MC: The most badass character I've seen in a few months. The way she handles everything is so satisfying. You can totally relate to her, and she does exactly what us (the readers) would have wanted to do in that situation. God, I'm in love with her.
- The blue puppy dog BOI: Adorable. Strong? Love interest? Maybe. When I said dog, its basically self-explanatory how the character is going to be. Well, he is a werewolf but more dogly and werewolfy.
Execution:
10/10
Definitely worthy of the score. Funny and catchy. Obviously only around 47 chapters have released so far but, you can tell the rest of the story is going to be funny from this alone. All the memes itself are enough to get it to 9/10Conclusion:
I'm just going to wrap it up here since I've been writing for quite some time now. Give the manhwa a try. It's a webtoon, full color and all. Around 1 chapter/week I believe. If you don't find the first 7 chapters interesting then this isn't your style mostly. BUT, if you do love comedy this one has got it all. Enjoy :)WhishiWashi
65/100The story and most of the characters are largely pretty good. Biggest complaint is the protagonist herself.Continue on AniListWarning: Review contains spoilers so do not continue reading if you don't want to be spoiled
Alright, so I'll start off right away with the positives on what I liked about the story.
Yona. That's it. She carries the story.
I like that the story delves into and breaks down the standard male lead archetypes that are shown in plently of other romance series
The idea of the original female lead having to repeat the same life over and over again when someone reads the story is an interesting concept
Another aspect to the male lead breakdowns is that they begin to develope as characters after everything, specifally talking about the crown prince
Time to get onto the main thing that I didn't like. Also, this is my personal opinion, if you disagree then that's fine.
Melissa. The female lead and protaginist of the story. Oh god, do I not like her.
She is basically a prime example of a mary sue. She somehow becomes a borderline sword master in a month?! Nani? Unlike other stories similar to this one like "Why She Lives as a Villainess", Melissia has zero prior knowledge in swordsmanship like Kendo but somehow she is able to go toe to toe with the 2nd strongest werewolf with only a month of training? That's absolutely bollocks. Another completely BS thing is her stupidly op magic sword. We aren't shown it in the story how she got it and it just kinda pops into the story out of nowhere, right before the author drops an exposition dump on us about how she got it but that's just extremely weak writing right there. If you're gonna give the main character a really powerful weapon that basically makes every fight a cakewalk then you should have the character earn it. But she doesn't do anything of the sort and gets it automatically.
Now let's talk about the big reason, the reason why I dropped the story in the first place. Chapter 63, oh god chapter 63. There is a scene is which the male lead, Nine, confronts Melissa about her plan on purposefully drinking poison in order to expose an antagonist. She has this whole plan on how she'd heal herself using Yuri's(the original female lead of the novel) magic in order to get rid of the poison. Obviously since Nine likes Melissa, he's worried and doesn't like the plan. But instead of attempting to reassure him that she'll be fine (you know, something a normal person would've done), she basically gets all pissy and tells him that she will do whatever she wants and that she should be the one worrying about him because she thinks he's looking down on her due to him being a werewolf while she's a human.
Even though Nine's worries are perfectly valid as A. She drinking extremely deadly poison and B. Melissa doesn't even know how Yuri's magic antidote is gonna react with the super deadly poison. It might not even do anything at all.
This scene left an extremely bitter taste in my mouth, only adding onto the previous dislike I had for her. I only made it past 2 more chapters before I just got fed up and dropped it. Espeically since Melissa had the audacity to go and be like "I don't know why he's mad" and "I didn't do anything wrong".
Anyways, what I'm trying to say is that everything else in the manhwa was fine and honestly, very enjoyable. The only thing I admantly disliked was the protagonist herself. And obviously, as the protagonist, she'll be the character with the most screen time.

60/100A fun story marred by strong cliches and awkward pacing. Still a decent 6/10 read despite slight disappointment.Continue on AniList__Beware the Disappointment__ This will be my first ever review for a series, and not for good reason. I don't consider myself proficient in writing reviews, but I feel compelled to write a review after having been disappointed by how Beware the Villainess turned out. I will review each component that led to my disappointment of the series separately and try to compartmentalize my thoughts on this manhwa.
Despite this review stating my dismay over how the series panned out, I did still enjoy its lightheartedness and warmth. Dangerous situations that could have called for drama was easily resolved with some decent maneuvering (and luck) from the main character. At the very least, Beware the Villainess did not lose its identity of being a cheerful and fun narrative throughout.
Moving on to my complaints, here is a short overview of the things I did not like about the series.
- Pacing
- Plot
- Main and side characters
- Climax and conclusion (including the way their relationships turned out)
- Side stories
Pacing
While the narrative that the manhwa wants to present is consistent, the way it delivers is the opposite. There are times that plot moves quickly from one point to another without a way of digesting current events, and there would be times that the narrative slowly and painfully spends too much of its time on one aspect that could have been easily breezed through. To put it simply, some parts are a drag to read, and some parts needed to be longer. I am not sure if this is because of a less-than-stellar adaptation of the novel, or if the novel's pacing was really like this. In any case, this is a complaint that I don't think I can remedy.
Plot
While I did say that the narrative was consistent, by no means did I mean that in the same vein as 'excellent'. I have no qualms with cliched storytelling, but going on a cliche and then going on a tangent that was lacking is quite unsatisfying. Granted, the comedy more than makes up for it, but I felt that while it was strong in the earlier chapters, the comedy died down a bit as the plot progressed (which in my opinion is the strongest asset the manhwa has). The cliches coupled by the somewhat random pacing has made some parts of the story difficult to read.
Main and side characters
The joke gets stale real quick when the main character repeatedly does the same gags over and over again, in this case being dense and airheaded. This is my biggest issue with Melissa, seemingly having both the qualities of a Mary Sue and a dumbass. There are times she makes it work, but more often than not I find myself getting frustrated at how seemingly backwards sometimes her growth is.
Next, the 'male leads'. They're utterly and inconceivably boring. I hated how they provided almost no substance to the story, and I think it's a consequence of the plot that has made them so. The plot progressed by slowly whittling down at the male leads to remove them from the picture. That in itself isn't a bad idea, but running them over like a train and providing no context whatsoever as to how they grew and changed (some didn't even get to do so) was tedious.
Nine falls into the same category above, aka he's boring as hell. He performed his role well, but being a cookie cutter character has not done him any favors.
The two shining beacons I had with the story were Yona and Yuri. I was compelled to finish the manhwa due to the two. One, a seemingly emotionless, money-hungry maid that has done so much for the background plot, and the other, a fun, dynamic character that brightens the page everytime she appears.
Climax and Conclusion
"That's it?" summarizes my feelings for the climax and conclusion. It felt utterly lacking. The latter parts of the story was so sped up that it felt like I was just reading to end the story quicker. There was no proper conclusion for the male leads, and more importantly, a glance into the mindset of Yuri after the events that happened, which I feel would have garnished the story so well. I understand that Melissa is the main focus of the story, but with how relatively lacking narratively the events surrounding her are, it would have made for a rounder story overall if some of that focus was shifted for the other characters.
The text under the spoiler tag is about how the romance progressed. Be warned if you don't want to be spoiled.
The amount of queerbaiting in this story was frankly a lot, and it is extremely disappointing that nothing of note happened. I thought that a bi relationship would finally be acknowledged, but not even a thought was spared for Yuri. I have no doubt my enjoyment would have peaked if Melissa ended up with Yuri instead, as that would be such a curveball that would have shattered the cliche. But well, things rarely happen the way you want them to go.Side Stories
Another case of "Wait, where's the rest?". I really thought we would have at least gotten some focus on Yuri for the side stories. But instead, we got random characters appearing, and even some stories dedicated to Kartena and Robbie, which confused me a lot because that should have been spent on the side characters that actually had more relevance (aka more Yuri, more of the male leads, etc.). It was nice that we finally got a glimpse on the backstory of Yona, but even that ended up slightly underwhelming because she had no proper conclusion either (did she manage to achieve her goal, or was she able to meet up again, etc.). All in all, lacklustre.
RUNDOWN
A fun and bright story marred by a lacking narrative and engaging progression, Beware the Villainess has equal parts of good and bad. Definitely a good read, but it also falls under the category of 'turn off your brain for a while and enjoy'. Nothing thought-provoking is to be had. However, Beware the Villainess definitely delivered its identity well, and for that I can say that it was a fun experience.
