0/100Smutty Webtoon that Completely Misses the Mark on RomanceContinue on AniListCAUTION: REVIEW MAY CONTAIN SPOILERS. READ AT YOUR OWN RISK.
Absolutely awful webtoon. It's not even a purely smut based webtoon, and instead presents itself as a romance with a touch of smut. But that doesn't fly by me. And here's why.
The art is its only saving grace, and while it's not the best art I've seen for a webtoon, it's absolutely and utterly wasted on this trash. It makes me feel so sorry for the artist, since this is such a poor representation of their skills, even nice art got completely dampened by the poor storytelling, which I believe is adapted from a novel.
The story (or lack thereof) is that two childhood friends become friends with benefits by intimately exploring each other's bodies every night. It's very gross and disgusting, not romantic at all, even if they try to convince you otherwise. And it's not because I haven't read stories with dark or disturbing themes, this is just done in a distasteful manner here, as if we, as readers, should approve of their weird relationship. In fact, the story is portraying the two of them like innocent friends-turned-lovers, when they're anything but.
The female lead acts like she is so pure but she's completely leading the clueless male lead on. Even worse, she's aware of it and denies that it's true. The male lead seems to be mentally delayed...and it's put into some endearing kind of light, which only makes this even more disturbing. Not only it is not romantic to romanticize mental or developmental issues, the story doesn't bother trying to deal with this in a serious or realistic tone. It reminds me of this TV drama I watched a long time ago, where a guy fell in love with a mentally challenged girl and they had kids together, and it was super controversial because the audience considered it to be sexual violation of a minor (since she had the mind of a child).
This is very similar to what it is happening here. The male lead is very, very child-like and doesn't understand basic concepts, and I can't believe he can function in normal society, much less hold a job or interact with other people properly. And while the TV drama I mentioned had its issues, at least the romance was somewhat plausible, because it built on the slow growth of the two characters' relationships.
That's not the case here. There's no romance in the beginning, it just skips basically to lust and sex, although they haven't actually had penetrative sex until near the middle of the story, but honestly, it doesn't matter. We get told they're childhood friends and the male lead wants to make the female lead feel good, which is why he's molesting her, and because it feels good, she lets him. Sigh.
This continues for some interminable-seeming amount of time, until the female lead thinks she's ready to take this to the next level. She doesn't know if she likes him or not, but she's afraid of hurting him, and she's afraid of what other people will think. None of her motivations made sense to me, and every time she talked or thought out her thoughts, I just got more fed up with her, because she's a completely unsympathetic character. She's just using the male lead as a tool to satisfy her sexual desires, and not seeing him as her equal, and she even goes on to call him a "man child" or a "wolf", basically dehumanizing him. Even the male saw through her BS later on, but he made no sense when he said he wanted to be her candy and her moonlight, and not her food or warm clothes. It was supposed to be romantic, but it was so laughably bad and cheesy, I can't take it at that face value. Not to mention, it continues to highlight how deeply wrong and weird their relationship is. He doesn't understand love, because he doesn't have that kind of mental capacity. She doesn't understand it either, because she doesn't even know how she sees him. All in all, these two shouldn't even be together. Honestly, if the author just decided to break the two of them up in the end, when they realize they both need to grow as people before committing to a serious relationship, I might have rated this much higher. But that doesn't happen.
Instead, he does some sort of "I quit!" move on her, and she runs up the mountain to find him, and they're like "Oh, maybe I do love you, after all." Although, the male lead is more like, " I don't know what is love, but as long as you're happy, I'm happy." Soooooooo, basically no growth and all that happened in between was shallow conflicts for the sake of conflict, and not for character development. My head hurt while reading this thing.
I'm still not over how this story uses a mentally challenged person and tries to make this type of relationship seem positive and romantic, when it's anything but. All I see is a cruel girl who's constantly using someone who's too naive and unable to say no to her, and she doesn't even suffer any consequences for her unacceptable behavior. That's just abuse.
And the author tries to brush it all under the table, having the female lead say that the male is actually quite intelligent, despite the way he speaks. Uh no, you can't do that, because he's never proven himself to be clever or smart or even close to normal. It even makes a point almost every chapter to show how abnormal he is, like pointing out how he behaves or talks or understands things!
Avoid!
