Kijima-san & Yamada-san is an exceedingly wholesome romcom that revolves around a simple, yet heavy concept. Ever wondered how would life be if you could read others' minds? I have. Finding out their secrets, their image of you and their true intentions would quite literally be a breeze. Most people initially think of that specific power as a blessing. This manga, however, explores the more difficult aspects of the whole thing.
At this day and age, apparently, simply being a good person is too hard for some. Fortunately, our protagonist, Kijima, is the one who accidentally grasped this ability and we immediately see it in action. Humans are nasty creatures. Kijima has to constantly listen to their disgusting thoughts and negative views, albeit he never makes a huge deal out of it. In fact, he actually tries to help each person out without holding grudges or judging them. There's nothing complex about that. He's just a good man. He's too good of a man that he's always bearing guilt for effortlessly reading others' minds, which directly contributes to his problems. His problem is that he's scared of deeply connecting with a significant other because his ex-girlfriend whom he cherished, dumped him shortly after he revealed his secret to her.
That is all the more reason to be grateful that the woman he came across was Yamada. Kijima was attracted to her because her mannerisms and inner thoughts were all so adorable and pure. Like Kijima, she only strived to see the good in people and the lights in life. This led to a series of the most wholesome exchanges of romance I've seen in a while. Kijima felt guilty, but he decided to keep taking action based off of Yamada's inner thoughts because he wanted to make her happy. He wanted to provide her with everything she longed for deep inside. He wanted to keep on seeing her smile innocently. That's why, during the finale, everything just felt fulfilling. They just wanted the best for each other because they love each other. I, myself, am thankful that Kijima opened up about his secret after spending enough time and progressing their relationship, which made it all the more easier for Yamada to accept Kijima for the Kijima she shared memories with. (They got such good friends too)
Fujii's arc
Speaking of friends, can't end this review without mentioning Fujii, Yamada's best friend. Did I forget to mention that she's also a telepath? She fell in love with Kijima and became a victim to the losing heroine syndrome (doesn't really count this time cuz he didn't reject her + she ain't got blue or short hair). Honestly, I don't blame her. In a world where you can hear everybody's horrible sides, a guy appears and this guy just happens to understand your pain perfectly, while also staying a considerate and good person without you needing to check. She wanted what's best for the ball of light (Yamada), so, naturally, she threw her feelings away. Jk, she couldn't. She chose the perfectly reasonable, but selfish route of opening up to Yamada, who felt shaken up and betrayed for a few moments, before regaining her composure and embracing her friend.
Sooooooooo
In conclusion, this underrated manga deserves an adaptation. It doesn't have to have crazy production value and I wouldn't call it peak romance, but if it did get adapted into an anime, attention is guaranteed. Two seasons maximum. In any case, romance fans give this one a go!
