10/100Safe, Tropey, Shallow and Throughly Underwhelming.Continue on AniList- (=①ω①=) - My Purrfect Boss follows office worker Lee Sunwoo as he stumbles into a relationship with his bad-tempered boss Kang Leo, who happens to be an ‘cat anthromorph’, or, in layman’s terms, a catboy.
Sunwoo is a socially awkward eager ball of sunshine and also incredibly boring. It was embarrassing to read his ineptitude as a protagonist. He trips and falls his way into finding out his boss is a catboy, into sex with his boss, into a relationship with his boss and into healing his boss’ sexual trauma. He’s at least not an absolute doormat, but his agency in pushing the story forward is less proactive and more a series of cliches and fate.
He is nothing but a vehicle to the true purpose of the story - to watch a hot catboy in a suit get his ass pounded.
Kang Leo can claim a depth that Sunwoo cannot. He is lonely, pushes people away and has a poor temper. He can be cowardly, he can be brave. I wish he was allowed to develop, or have agency in the story outside of the plot needing to be driven forward. His trauma is not given the weight it deserves and feels so disconnected from everything else that happens.
The only other important character is an abusive ex-boyfriend of Leo, whose name I have already forgotten and I cannot be bothered to check. He is thrown into the story as a weak drama-stirrer. He is there to test Leo and Sunwoo’s relationship, and literally nothing else. He is weak story writing incarnate.
Every plot element, every character, all world building is window dressing. The office is window dressing. What are they even doing in the office? It does not impact the plot in any way except as a basic setting and a reason to see hot guys in suits. The ‘anthromorphs’ are window dressing. It’s just there because catboys are sexy (based but i digress). The most it effects the actual story is to smush Leo and Sunwoo together like Barbies.
Should you really ever expect anything when you read a yaoi? My feelings on the genre always boil down to this. What was I expecting? Yaoi, fundamentally, is looking in on an idealised relationship like a voyuer. It’s fluff, its not deep, the authors don’t pretend like it is. It’s fluff to make you feel good, or sexually gratified, or because you like watching a cute twink get brutalised. Should I really expect more than tropey fluff and vouyeristic porn?
I don’t know! But I do know that this was a thorough waste of my time.
Personally, the art is underwhelming and proportions are wonky on occasion, and I've seen better catboys. If you want to see guys in suits fuck or see a catboy get assblasted, then this is for you. Even if I didn't like the plot or the drama, it is satisfyingly concluded (not to my tastes but it is) and I can understand why people would enjoy it.
though, CW for sexual assault in the later chapters, [SPOILERS] it's in Leo's backstory and nearly happens, but is thwarted.
