79/100Cliché at many points, but does go beyond that eventuallyContinue on AniListIntroduction
Touch to Unlock is a manga that I started for what it could be called "dark" reasons. It is a hentai, and honestly, I did expect not too much about it besides what one can expect from a manga of this kind. Such was my surprise when I discovered that Touch to Unlock had more going on than only sex and fap material, though it has, not gonna lie. I reckon this manga offers quite more than one could expect and so it deserves a review on its own. Spoilers ahead, since I don't know how to explain myself with a hentai without spoiling it.
A little bit of everything
So I started this read quite hopeless about its story, and in fact it showed to be just another cliched and common one. A female bully bullying the MC, and we know that a twist will make them fuck. And so they did, with her denying everything and him being clueless. At the end of every chapter there was 6 silhouettes, except for Hong's one (the bully), what indicates he was going to meet 7 different characters.
The first Hong arc was cliched as fuck, and I thought of droping it tbh. The next arc (the doctor one) wasn't any better and just served the "dark" purpose of this manga. I was on the verge of finally dropping it but I gave it its last chance. Then the Rina arc started. Rina seemed to be just another "slutty" (sorry for that term) girl who was going to fuck the MC, but it thankfully turned to be a good arc. The feelings, how Rina and the MC started to have chemistry and the evolution was quite good and in fact surprised me. Indeed, I had to read the last part of this arc just for knowing the story, with no other intention. It was quite emotional and in fact worth the read. I gotta admit it touched my heart a little bit, making Rina my second favourite character in this manga.
Then I went through the probably worst arc of the manga, the teacher one. I really had hope when I finished the Rina arc, and the manga had potential to improve. It just didn't. Pointless arc, with some kinky scenes that don't really contribute to anything. Maybe some people like these kinks? I didn't.
Then we start to enter the big deal, with the permission of Rina's arc. The "battle" arc between Sol and Minchae. I really liked how they developed their personalities and sex scenes, having in mind it was cliched as fuck. Two friends in love with the same person and have to compete. Oh, talk about innovation. But I would be lying if I said I didn't like this arc. It served its purpose and I liked the two girls, both their drawing and their personality. It was a good arc to bridge from the worst to the best part of this manga.
We're here, the Lin/Hong arc. Yep, quite a lot sex scenes, but they fade away quite easily to focus on the main story. I like that, I find it better to just have a mature story able to include sex scenes if necessary , but not to force them just to jerk off. This arc makes the MC enter a dilemma (at first it doesn't seem as such) between the two female protagonists (oh, the two of them are childhood friends, HOW INNOVATIVE!). At this point of the story, Hong's still aggressive, but we start to see her true feelings. She's insecure yet brave, and Lin's just the ideal woman and perfect herself. The MC falls in love with Lin (he's always been, in fact) and, eventually they start dating. But Hong's there. She evolves as no one, she evolves more than a lot of "serious" characters of "serious" works do. It's not just a "from zero to 100" bully's development, it has grays and illustrates the typical "from enemies to lovers" stuff from a reasonable point of view. Have to say, with Hong being his bully, I myself wouldn't accept it, but somehow I can more or less understand it. The ending of this arc, and thus of the manga, really illustrates how love is selfish and unreasonable. He's in love with both of them, but can't choose. Lin shows guts and ends it when she should. A totally unrecognisable Hong (from its evolution) marries the MC and Lin manages to be their friend anyway. A bittersweet ending, totally bitter if you rooted for Lin, that shows how love is not that simple to just be the "FUCK BOTH AND THAT'S IT" hentai cliché.
Summing up, the plot and characters are diverse, and its quality is varied. Personally, Hong is my favourite character and Rina the second one. I also appreciate Lin. But the plot itself is, honestly, very varied in quality. It has some pretty nice arcs but it has another ones that are.... meh, at best. I don't remember any rape scene, I really hope there really was any. I fucking hate them, even more if they make them look like something normal. Stop doing that, for god's sake!
Technically, the drawing is nothing outstanding, but it does its job really well. Honestly, the drawings are hot and help getting into the story. I cannot request too much more to it.
That's it, the hentai manga that convinced me the most. It has its flaws, a lot of them in fact, but manages to not be a piece of shit, specially with the rape scenes (as I said, I don't remember any). I hope you liked this weird review!

80/100A good chunk of bad arcs, but well worth reading for the character development of Joo Hong alone.Continue on AniListI won't lie, Touch to Unlock starts out really rough. The first arc with the character Joo Hong is really nothing and just feels like an excuse to let the main character have sex with his bully, and the second arc with Dr. Jiweon can literally be cut entirely and the story would lose absolutely nothing. The third arc, featuring Ye Rina, might start out seeming like it's gonna be more of the same but this is the arc that convinced me this read was worth my time. It manages to develop Rina into a very sympathetic and interesting character, and then ends on an incredibly emotional gut punch of an event. The arc after, with the teacher Ms. Cheon, is... also not super great. Her story overall is fine but about 50% of it seems to exist to check off the boxes on a list of fetishes. From there though it stays pretty consistently good, the arc featuring Suh Sol and Ha Minchae is actually rather good and has some great comedic moments alongside both girls being generally pretty damn likeable.
But honestly none of those are why you should read Touch to Unlock. You should read Touch to Unlock specifically for Joo Hong. At the start of the comic she is a horrible horrible person, serving as the relentless bully of the main character Shin Chiho. After her "unlocking" where she winds up with the uncontrollable urge to have sex with Chiho (admittedly a very weak introduction), things actually get way better from there. Unlike every other character in the series Hong is given development and a character arc throughout the entire story, as the whole unlocking thing sort of forces her to start seeing Chiho as more of a person than she has in the past. Slowly she starts to develop feelings for Chiho and goes through a whole gauntlet of emotions because of it. She starts off confused by it, then bitterly denying it, too embarrassed to act on it, finally giving into it but not enough to fully confess it, being sort of open about it while still not saying it out loud, and finally accepting and openly displaying those feelings. Unfortunately this hesitation eventually puts her in conflict with her best friend and fellow love interest Baek Lin, and it's this arc (the third season, as its referred to) where the story gets incredibly good.
Hong is now one of my favorite characters in anything like this, her evolution from being somebody who Chiho lists in his phone as "The Devil" to somebody with a deeply close and emotional connection to him is pretty believable and really heartwarming to see. Her insecurities about whether or not she even deserves to want him to be with her considering her past of relentlessly bullying him are relatable (mostly) and really do a good job portraying what it's like second guessing your feelings about somebody you love. It's a love story where for once Chiho being an oblivious dumbass is not the sole reason for the rocky road to a relationship, but instead it's a mix of that and the self-sabotage that Hong keeps finding herself taking part in. Frankly I think this story would have been better had it not had been obligated to take semi-frequent breaks from the relationship development to be porn for a few chapters, but when Touch to Unlock wants to be good it is really really good, good enough that I would honestly say it's worthwhile muscling through the mediocre stuff to get to the good.
Joo Hong is a character I don't think I'll ever forget, she may well now be one of my favorite characters of all time, which is not something I expected to say when I first started reading Touch to Unlock expecting some garbage. Entertaining garbage, but garbage nonetheless. It's not perfect, but it is good enough that I can say my initial assessment was overall wrong.
