67/100A typical, short, romcom mangaContinue on AniListAfter binge reading [Don't Blush, Sekime-san!](https://anilist.co/manga/127778/Dont-Blush-Sekimesan/) in one sitting, I figured I would collect my overall thoughts about it. I first saw Sekime-san when I was viewing the most recent updated manga about a week ago and the final chapter was posted. I put it on my planned list and circled back to it today.
The first chapter is what you would expect from a romcom/slice of life manga. The story opens up with the main male protagonist, Riku Takadono, sitting in class, admiring a girl from their school. The girl being admired, Kaede Sekime
, is the protagonist and the most beautiful and popular girl at school. She is extremely nice to everyone, she has millions of friends, and her life seems to be filled with happy days. There is one strange thing that Takadoo just can't figure out. Takadoo is ignored by Sekime! It is Takadoo's turn in collecting the homework packet from his other classmates and Sekime completely ignores him, drops her smile, and looks away. Takadoo starts to believe that Sekime hates him. His fellow classmates see his treatment from Sekime and feel sorry for him. Being hated by the most infamous girl in your high school is a nightmare situation for Takadoo. What reason would Sekime have to hate Takadoo? Takadoo wanted to get to the bottom of that. There is a sliver of hope for Takadoo that if he is able to clear up the mysterious reason as to why Sekime dislikes him, then maybe he can have a chance with her. As their school day approaches the end of the day, Takadoo realizes he forgot his phone in his desk. He reaches the classroom and see Sekime sitting at his desk. Why is she there? Takadoo enters the classroom and asks Sekime just that. She gets up, but says nothing. Takadoo's brain starts to imagine Sekime putting acorns in his desk as a prank. Does Sekime really hate Takadoo that much? Takadoo finally asks if she hates him. Sekime says she doesn't but her abnormal treatment towards him leaves Takadoo with doubts that she does hate him. Sekime's frustration shows as she wonders why Takadoo has any concern towards her. Takadoo begins to rattle off why. She is his classmate, she acts completely opposite towards him compared to others, he believes they would get along together well, and (most importantly) that she is cute. Sekmie's face is hidden and her eyes are set on the exit. Fortunately, Sekmie starts to fall and Takadoo grabs her arm and is pulled down with her. The two are now face to face. Sekime is breaking the manga's own golden rule: Don't Blush, Sekime-san!Their story begins there. It is not long after that they share their feelings with each other and start dating. I was surprised to see them become a couple so soon, but boy was I relived to avoid the appearance of a love rival, a miscommunication situation or the disbelief of their feels towards each other. I enjoy dramatized stories, but a wholesome and pure relationship is easier to swallow.
Majority of the story was quite similar to another manga that I currently read and enjoy, Komi Can't Communicate. The appearances of the two main protagonists are similar to Komi's, long black hair, beautiful, and elite status at their school, and Tadano's , short black hair, friendly, and approachable. The beginning of their relationship is similar to Komi's in most scenarios where Takadoo is doing most of the talking while Sekime is listening and blushing.
The story's originality develops in the last 15 chapters or so. You begin to learn more about the protagonists life and family and watch some of the basic romcom tropes take a different end, funnier end. The 43 chapter manga ends as it felt like it was just beginning.
All in all, this was a good read. My heart went doki doki, I laughed, and appreciated a wholesome story.
