80/100A fighting manga with absurd fights that make absolutely no sense, along with some really great artContinue on AniListMinor Spoilers
A while back I was on a trip to Japan. I traveled to many places all over the country, it was truly an amazing journey. One of the destinations I spent the most time in was tokyo, the incredible capital of Japan.
During and before this I was reading Tokyo Duel (Tokyo Kettou Kanjousen).
In the beginning I thought of it just as a simple fighting manga, nothing more. But as more and more fighters from different districts of tokyo were introduced I got more and more interested in these places.
I would never have traveled to Sugamo Jizo-Dori street and eaten the amazingly tasty Shio Daifukus and looked at all kinds of weird jars. I would never have went to the cozy izakaya street in Yurakucho. I woukd never have gone to Ueno and seen all their panda references (even pancakes formed like panda faces) or walked through Ameyoko market. I would probably never even have traveled Yamanote line unless I had read this manga. This manga truly elevated my time in Tokyo to a whole new level, it felt like I was connecting into the manga, understanding and experiencing the different references from the fighters locations. It made it all so much more enjoyable, I loved it.I believe this is what makes this fighting manga stand out. The references and representations of the different stations of Yamonote line and the absurdity this is brought to. For example the idea of a guardian Hachiko dogs of Shibuya that passes down from dog to dog. I don't want to give too many examples and references away here, since if you who is reading this haven't read the manga I want you to experience the references yourself.
The story is not really anything special here, it's just duels of the stations survival and the classic cliché character development in the midst of battle and from teachings of masters and friendship.
Although it has some twists and turns, especially later on it's not really anything ground-breaking.The art however is really great. Especially towards the later chapters where it truly details and formate the fights into something amazing. The art is never a problem, every fight and every moment is lifted up heavily by it.
I would say that if you just want an enjoyable manga with a ton of unique and special fights then this is exactly what you are looking for. Sure, it won't make you cry or feel any real emotions (except for a ton of hype and excitement) but it will never bore you. Especially as soon as you leave the first and enter the main tournament, that's when the fughts get really good, and it gets even better when the URS arc starts, that's when the best and most absurd fights are.
This manga will never bore me and I hope it goes on for many more chapters, it's a lot of fun to read!
