100/100A Hidden ‘Must Read’ GemContinue on AniListNot one complaint to truly be had about this series. It didn’t drag, and no other things overstayed their welcome. The art style is simple yet displays emotion and movement satisfyingly, and the character designs are so boyish. With most stories, I typically focus on just the feeling of the romance, yet Kisses x Kiss x Kisses is one of those ones where you feel that the fact they’re both boys is more overwhelming than some other aspects.
The main character, Mijeong, is heavily relatable (he’s actually quickly become my most relatable character), as in this high school adventure there’s no severe plot turns, it’s all realistic to people around the same age as these characters; especially older siblings who have younger siblings. His plot line on letting people in is told in such a small yet impactful way.
Hangyul is also a realistic character with his own situation, and despite Jeong and himself having some differences, particularly on family aspects, there is actual communication between the two that resolves their issues. You can understand and feel for them both, and understand their behaviours and jealousies. You never get angry over one of them having a different view, and neither do the characters themselves act oblivious to the fact that other people can have what you want, yet want what you have instead.
The side characters play a nice part too, and you feel for them too, and you also appreciate some of the comic relief or help they hand out whenever miscommunication does happen even if just for a short time. Even when they at times take over, they have their own deep relationship being explored, I never minded it.
Other than the more ‘serious’ aspects of the series, it’s also very funny. Jeong is often displayed in a ‘chibi’ style and is shown doing weird things that cause fourth wall breaks, like Hangyul will call him out for teleporting or flying- not as in actually teleporting or flying, but the result of movement that isn’t animated causing it to look like so. Jeong, much like Sadie in ‘My Darling is The Cutest’, is also at times portrayed as a small hamster, his appearance akin to Hangyul’s actual pet hamster which is also actually pointed out by Hangyul.
For any that may also read fanfiction (which I assume is majority), this series also has many tropes displayed, for example accidental cuddling, wining arcade toys for each other, and character helping character with injuries. It very much gave ‘if a fanfic was actually canon for two characters’ if that makes sense, and it made their relationship even more enjoyable and almost familiar. The fact that their feelings sparked due to a sentence like ‘give me a kiss’ when it meant ‘hershey kiss’ also helped this feeling.
It upset me when I got near to the end of this series and I remembered ‘wow, who can I rant to about this, it seems not many have heard about this masterpiece’, hence my review to encourage others. If you have any time on your hands and are looking for a funny and cute slice of life romance story, I highly encourage you to check this series out, you will not regret having spent time on this.
