100/100Farewell, Galaxy Express 999Continue on AniList(This Review Contain Spoilers)
This second film in terms of production is magnificent and the work done by director Rintaro was exceptional, the design of the characters remained the same as in the previous film and the animation gave it an extra charm in the story. Despite not enjoying the first movie so much because the experience does not have the same impact as the original series, and I even understand the reason for trying to attract more people so that they could watch it and this is interesting and the fact that a lot of people don't have time to watch it 113eps in a series as long as GE999.
This film is a direct sequel to the first film / series that takes place two years after the events of the destruction of the Mechanized Empire. Despite the destruction of the home planet of mechanization, Andromeda, the machine empire is still swept across the galaxy and the Earth has become a battleground. Having returned from his journey aboard the Galaxy Express 999 train, Tetsurou Hoshino joins the resistance and fights alongside others who have maintained their humanity.
The fight between humans and Cyborgs is even more devastating and cruel, not only on Earth but also on several other planets around the universe, but with the Cyborgs still completely dominating everything, but they have not yet managed to transform the rest of the people in Cyborgs. . After receiving an enigmatic recorded message from Maetel to board 999. Struggling to reach Megalópolis station, he gets on the train at the time of departure. Tetsuro and Maetel set out again on a mission to destroy the headquarters of the robot empire in the center of the galaxy. Along the way, they meet some old friends and, at the same time, their journey is being overshadowed by a mystery by which one of their own Allies can be their greatest enemy.
This second film manages to explain some things that were not so clear throughout the series and one of them was about the death of Tetsuro Hoshino's father and this plot of him being an old friend of Captain Harlock was something I already imagined but it was a very good thing to see.
Faust is now the chief servant of Queen Promethium, ruler of the Mechanization Empire. Reportedly killed by Tetsuro (and possibly his mother), Fausto was once a warrior who fought alongside Harlock and Emeraldas, but at some point his heart changed and he took a Cyborg, becoming a high-ranking warrior of the machine people. After learning that his son is alive, he tries to persuade Tetsuro, without revealing his own identity, to see his point of view and stop opposing the Empire, knowing that Promethium will demand the boy's death.
Tetsuro refuses, and he and Fausto finally face each other at the top of 999 while the Great Andromeda falls into ruins. Despite the separate paths that his paths followed and his sadness at seeing father against son, Harlock still toasts Faust as a friend, knowing that no matter who wins the battle, he will suffer the death of the other.
Goodbyes on Galaxy Express are always very sad. I simply find it incredible the message that the work sent throughout this journey and the meaning of being alive.

100/100Adieu, Adieu to the era of youth.Continue on AniListFarewell Maetal.
Farewell Tetsuro.
Farewell Galaxy Express 999.
The war between machines and humans is nearly over, those of limited life are soon to be no more. Nobody knows who controls the railroads anymore, a ghost train rides throughout the universe unrivaled, and a new queen bears the crown of Andromeda. Who truly is the Black Knight? With these final mysteries it is time to finally bid farewell.
The story begins with once again another reminder of the ongoing battle between humanity and machines, this time on a grander scale than the original series. For the first time in 2 years Maetal calls on Tetsuro to ride the Galaxy Express 999 for a final time, and with absolutely no knowledge of where or why it's traveling he answers the call. The aura of mystery over this finale is truly immaculate, and the mood is certainly lending itself to the title of endings. The excitement of the original show is replaced here by an incredible ominous tension that grips hold of you tight until the final minutes where everything comes to a climax. I would absolutely recommend to watch the original Galaxy Express 999 show first, and then this as your concluding movie to wrap everything together. It is one of the most beautiful endings I could have imagined, all throughout the day after watching it I have felt like crying over the emotional impact it carried.
In regards to the production, I would say it's certainly quite stellar if you're coming from the original show. There's a wide-screen view, it's been preserved better so less film bugs and lines are present, and of course there's a general glow up due to it being a movie production. Tetsuro of course marks the biggest change, it's been two years since his original journey so our favorite young one has grown up some. And lastly there's the music, ranging from mighty orchestral beats to heart-wrenching tunes that still have me in tears. At some point there's even one song that brings to mind the daft punk film Leiji worked on.
Galaxy Express 999 was one of the most enjoyable series that I've watched, and certainly the first to make me want to watch something as long as it. I'm delighted to see it was done such great service in this film. Overall I think if you liked the show you'll probably be immensely impressed with this especially, and if you have some friends to rope into watching it they'll probably enjoy it too with a bit of a lore update beforehand. There are a few elements that are seemingly from the recap/remake movie before this, but nothing that should ruin the experience of this.
But remember, this is it, one last journey with the Galaxy Express 999. As the title implies this is the going away party of the century, and afterwards no character will be the same. The era of youth is finally at an end.
