68/100The Greatest Demon Lord is Reborn as The Greatest Demon Lord with weaker enemies and allies.Continue on AniListThe greatest "demon lord" was reborn as the greatest human. This anime looked interesting at first glance but became boring after the time skipped into high school. When I rate an anime, I take five categories into consideration: sound/music, visuals, characters, story, and ending. The sound, visuals, opening, and ending are all good. Ard is the main character of the anime. Ard doesn't change when he reincarnates, and he keeps all of his powers. His status as a typical nobody is quickly dissipated. His main conflict is his regret that he couldn't save Lydia.
Ard is an interesting character, but the people around him determine whether the anime as a whole is interesting. Ireena is a character that quickly grew annoying. She has two semi-conflicts over the anime. The first conflict she has is with her lineage as it causes her to be bullied. We don't really see this, but it is apparently solved simply by Ard following her around and persisting in his attempts to become her friend. The second conflict is how she carries the blood of the evil gods, but Ard doesn't care about that so it's solved within a minute. These conflicts don't make Ireena interesting because they don't create any tension between the characters and are solved half-hazardly.
Ginny is worse than Ireena. Her only conflict was her lack of confidence which was built up over many years and was immediately solved within one or more days. Over the course of the anime, Ginny becomes extremely bold, which is unbelievable considering her extreme lack of confidence earlier. On an additional note, the way Ard, Ireena, and Ginny speak is extremely annoying, but that's just a subjective opinion. There is another problem with Ireena and Ginny that I will talk about in the story category. Olivia isn't very interesting herself, but the way she comes close to realizing that Ard is the demon lord is an interesting dynamic. Sylphy has her obsession with Lydia, but that's about it. Lydia's personality surprised me, but she doesn't really have any conflicts. Despite all of this, they are more interesting around Ard than Ireena and Ginny. This is because of power dynamics. The story in this anime varies from terrible to good, and that all depends on who's around Ard. The first main arc in the story is the frenzied dragon king's attack, and it could've been solved so easily if Ard had just taken out all of the small fry demons instantly. The second main arc occurs because of a lack of communication, but it wasn't that bad. The duel between Olivia and Ard was disappointing because it could've been cool to watch. The last arc revolves around the past, and it's the best arc of the series. This is because, for once, the enemy is formidable. The problem with Ireena and Ginny is the fact that they are so weak. Ireena and Ginny talk about this briefly in the last episode, and their answer is to not give up. This doesn't fix the problem. Because of this gap in power, the enemies are weakened or we have to rehash the save your friends trope. We don't have to do this with Ard's old colleagues, and it makes them more interesting to interact with.
The ending was pretty good. It did a good job settling the matter between the two "Demon Lords." I wish the fight between Ard and himself included more magic considering that's what they specialize in, but that's only a minor complaint. I don't need a season two, but if one comes along, I'll watch it.

The Greatest Demon Lord Is Reborn as a Typical Nobody is a rollercoaster that it is teetering on the edge of being a bearable watch. There are a few reasons for this, many being that plenty of the show's qualities are not redeeming in any sense of the word. If I paid close attention and analyzed each episode for its faults, I am sure I could draft a very long review. However, there are certain points of this show that cause me so much frustration that I refuse to look at the depth of the show in its entirety. The main reason for my hatred for the show overall is the stupid succubus Ginny.Ginny is the worst thing that could possibly happen to this show. She is only in the show for her chest. If you only like melons and characters for how they look, this may be the show for you, because Ginny, and Ireena, have the personality of a 2-by-4. Yes, they both have character arcs, in fact, Ireena has an interesting backstory with her having the blood of the evil gods. It just so happens that this plot-point is barely explored. Now, some people will say that is because the writers are waiting for season two; and to that I say, wake up. When one of your main characters is only there for her chest, there is a good chance the show is not getting a season 2.
This show is one of those copy-paste shows. We all know them, they all have 12 episodes, are usually an isekai, or have isekai like traits. With me saying that, some of these copy-paste shows are not bad, in fact, I actually enjoy some of them. However, when these copy-paste shows feature a useless, annoying, one-dimensional character who is only there to present her chest to the world (Ginny), I tend to get frustrated.
We are introduced to Ginny as someone who is getting bullied by the stereotypical 'duke's' son. Obviously, our main character decides to help her out because it could not be written any other way. You can probably guess what happens next, the stupid succubus falls in love with our main character. She also magically gains favor and confidence that completely changes how she acts in front of everyone. This is not inherently a problem, however, this development is not shown at all. She seemingly goes from someone who is outcasted, bullied, and reserved to someone who is confident in themselves, enough to openly 'rally' all the girls to create a harem.
The idea of 'show don't tell' in film is expressed in the show, but at the worst points in the character's arc. For Ginny, we are shown that she has developed into a confident character, but we are not shown her progress. You simply do not go from one extreme to another instantaneously, in the case of Ginny, outcasted to popular, bullied to accepted, shy to confident. We are only shown the starting product vs. the ending product rather than how they got from start to end. Same could be said with Ginny's combat abilities.
When we look at how powerful our three main characters are, Ard makes sense, he is the reincarnation of the demon lord. When it comes to Ireena, at least there is an explanation, she is the daughter of a great hero; we could even assume that her 'evil god blood' has something to do with her power. Ginny is not anything other than a stupid succubus. Yes, we are told that her family has protected an aristocrat's family for generations, but the dynamic between the duke's son and Ginny seem to detail what 'protected' actually means. When Ard saved Ginny and subsequentially fought the duke's son (yes, I know he is not actually the duke's son), the consensus of the class is that the duke's son was not only the most powerful in the class, but one of, if not the most powerful mage at his age in history. This is no ordinary kid. Why would this kid need a stupid succubus to protect him? The answer is he does not. Ginny, and her family, do not actually protect the aristocrats, rather they serve them as any maid/assistant would.
Despite this, Ginny has an equal combat ability to Ireena. This makes absolutely zero sense. By isekai terms, Ireena is gifted by result of her lineage as well as she was trained in magic, since she was young, by the person who conquered the world and killed gods. Even if you say Ginny trained since she was young, which is not shown or told, the difference between Ireena and Ginny would immeasurable.
Ginny is intolerable in this show, much more than Ireena in my opinion. Ireena is also stupid, but just a bit less than Ginny. One of the big characteristics of Ireena is that Ard is her first friend. She believes this, her dad believes this, Ard believes this. So tell me, when did Ireena become friends with the queen? When the group were put forth in front of the queen, Ireena stood up and greeted the queen, unceremoniously, like they were old friends seeing each-other for the first time in a while. The entire interaction, the dialogue, the expressions, all pointed towards the idea that they were childhood friends. Also, we learn later that Ireena and her dad appointed the queen so they could rule from the shadows to protect their secret lineage. Weirdly enough, even after the group met with the queen, Ireena and her dad still go onto say that she only has one friend in Ard. What is the queen then if not a friend? Does the queen secretly hate Ireena and her dad for appointing her as queen at such a young age. If there is any animosity between the queen and Ireena that would prove that they are not friends, can we see it?
There is so much in this show that is not shown.
My expectations when watching this show were low. Just from the cover art, I knew what kind of show this was going to be. After watching the show, I can confidently say my expectations were met, this show is bad. However, I am disappointed to say that this show had potential. Ard is a cool character. The idea of a reincarnated ruler working under his past subordinates is interesting; we have seen it done before in The Misfit of Demon King Academy, regardless, I still think the idea is fresh. The struggle that Ard goes through to maintain his secret as the former demon king while interacting with his former acquaintances is great. As expected, it creates a dynamic between the person that is Ard Meteor and the person that was the demon king. In moments when Ard is talking to Sylphy, a former acquaintance, he gets pissed off and reveals his 'demon king' emotions towards the character. These moments are funny to watch and gets me thinking, "how will he keep his secret this time."
Even the plot of the show, where he travels back in time to stop what was revealed to be himself from saving Lydia, is really cool. I think the god transporting him out of nowhere is a bit dumb and convenient, but I can overlook that. Ard being faced with the choice to correct his biggest regret is great. It again references the dynamic between Ard Meteor and the demon king. Two people who share the same regret but different mindsets when it comes to the solution. It was at this point that I almost could not guess what was going to happen. But of course, by which it was set-up, I certainly did guess what happened. Ard is one of the only saving graces of this show. He reminds me a little of the main character from Trapped in a Dating Sim: The World of Otome Games Is Tough for Mobs. Granted, that show intentionally made every side character bad to simulate the terrible and generic environment of Otome games.
The other saving grace of this show was the colors and animations of the magic system. Let me clarify that it was not anything special or even good, but it was not bad. After contemplating stepping off of a skyscraper from enduring Ginny's BS, my eyes were pleasantly surprised to see, although completely generic, a smooth, vibrant, and a somewhat detailed animation of magic.
Other than these two things, nothing else comes to mind when I think of things in the show that were not bad. Would I recommend this show to other people, absolutely not. The show is not good and I would not even say that, as a whole, it is enjoyable. If you really need, not want, something to watch, still do not watch this show. There are plenty of other crappy isekais that are more enjoyable than this show.
