55/100Wonder egg priority is really a wasted potentialContinue on AniList"Wonder egg priority" is an original anime which aired for 12 episodes in winter 2021. It was an unique show with unique animation which drew me in.
I would say for an original anime it was pretty good, but it couldn't be said the same for how it concluded.
It's about a bunch of 14 year olds who had lost someone important to them, and discover an "egg". And when the break the egg they go inside a parell world and save some (already dead)teenagers by clearing/ getting rid of their trauma. By doing this the person they had lost would come back to life.
But however, after I finished the 12 episodes and the special, I feel empty and disappointed.
Especially by the way they concluded the story in the special episode.
It was lacklustre. The characters were barely moving. Things happening made no sense, and it felt rushed.
The script was written poorly. Many things weren't explained. Not to mention the first 20 minutes turned out to be an unneeded recap. The special episode was only 46 minutes overall and they wasted whole 20 minutes on recap.
1, How did Neiru disappear?? Unless Neiru and her sister were the same person she wouldn't disappear. They were just siblings so it made to sense for her to disappear, just because her sister is now alive.
Not to mention it only happened to Neiru and not to the other girls.
2, HOW THE HELL DID NEIRU'S SECRETARY HAVE THE VIDEO OF HER DREAM??
Correct me if I am wrong, but aren't eggs and parell worlds supposed to happen in dreams? If so then there is no way the secretary could record her dream.. unless they live in the future, which I don't think they do.
3, How did Neiru meet frill and why were they standing in some water-like place?
Was it the Parel world? But it didn't seem like the usual place...
If it was the real world, wasn't Frill in the basement without anyway out of it?
And even though we get to know how Koito died, it felt very flat. Who did she threaten? Who was she waiting for? What does Sawaki sensei have to do with her death?
And most importantly, who is Sawaki sensei really and what does he want? He's perceived by the girls as a phedo , a genuine kind person and as an annoying teacher who wants ai to come to school. What is his true nature?
I wish the mystery surrounding him would have been closed too.
And this is completely my personal opinion but I wanted Ai to move on and start a new life. I didn't like that she was hung up in the past.
Overall-
Even though lacklustre and rushed, I am glad they concluded the story because for the past 3 months I was loosing sleep over this Koito and Sawaki mystery.
Thank goodness they ended it.Wonder egg priority special episode gets a :
55/100
It wasn't bad, just extremely mediocre

10/100A damn mess. Maybe if studios treated their staff like human beings, this sh-t wouldn't keep happening.Continue on AniListThis review is literally stream of consciousness but if it makes more sense than whatever the hell this conclusion was supposed to be, I'll count it as a win.
Also. THIS IS NOT SPOILER FREE.
I'm going to have to go into WEP as a whole to discuss the special, one because they're incredibly connected, and two, if I didn't there'd be nothing to talk about here as essentially nothing of plot or purpose happened in the special to begin with.
Yeah.
So.
Wonder Egg Priority at its foundation was spectacular. Our MC has lost her best and only friend to suicide and is introduced to a fantastical world that boasts the impossible: fight here and you can bring your friend back. From a fantasy standpoint, you're already interested. It's the dark magical girl tale that people have been searching for since Madoka. The animation thrived, the fight scenes were amazing, the soundtrack BANGED, the characters were lovable, etc.
Then there were the real life aspects that drew you in as well. Life as a teenaged girl is complicated. There are dangers at every turn and here we navigated multiple stories of the horrors young girls are often exposed to: sexual abuse, grooming from male teachers, victim-blaming, fanatical idol worship that manifests in deadly ways, trans identity, self-harm, etc. And almost every single one of these topics were treated with dignity in a way we don't often see in media. It wasn't shock value. It was actual exploration of trauma dealt with kindly and with the empathy it deserved. I absolutely loved seeing it.
WEP combined fantasy and reality into an incredibly compelling plot and with just enough mystery to keep it going. What happened between Koito and Mr. Sawaki? Why did she kill herself? Was she groomed? Was it misplaced jealousy? What about these other girls? Who are they? What drew them here? What brought them all together? And what is this world? How is this possible? What does it mean?
That's all we needed. That's all that was necessary.
But instead, around the halfway point, they gave us........everything and nothing. They kept adding to the plot, questions weren't being answered in a satisfactory way, trauma was suddenly throw at us for the sake of trauma, and the origin story we were searching for only left us with more questions. At around episode 10 I realized that there was no way they were going to be able to wrap this up into something even remotely coherent. And I was right.
Which leads us to the special.
What we wanted them to do:
- properly explain and integrate the backstory with the AI that was suddenly thrown at us last minute
- help us understand those butterfly girls, detail the relationship with the AI, why they were so seemingly unbeatable and why the hell they ate the pets
- tell us how this was possible as a whole and properly detail the sacrifice such a journey entailed instead of random bouts of unexplained violence thrown at the girls
- explain wtf happened at the end
- literally ANY interaction with the girls revived in a way that made ANY type of sense and
any type of resolution to the original plot line
What we got:
- 20 minutes of gotdamned backstory for a show that ended 3 months ago and only had 12 episodes.Who the hell needed that????
- Neiru?????
- The most ridiculous ending to the Koito mystery. She lusted after her teachers so much she drove one to suicide, accused another of rape, and then fell off a damn building. After all that proper treatment of girls abused by society, THIS was how they treated Koito and her story. I’m disgusted, tbh.
- MORE unanswerable questions. A clone? A Parallel universe, unexplored? That dead kotobuki girl or whatever tf her name was did what?????
- Neiru?????????????
- Nothing of the creatures
- 2 seconds of grief
- The dissolving of the friend group
- Neiru??????????????????????
I could go on but I honestly don’t know what else to say other than that I’m so disappointed, my head is actually spinning. How could they do that to Koito after all of this? Why did Neiru’s story have to go this way? Why destroy the friend group after dumping even more tragedy on them? How on earth are we supposed to be satisfied with this? Was this purposefully left open-ended? Will there be more?
It’s been a long time since I’ve seen a show’s potential collapse like this. The first half was a 10/10, whatever the hell happened next dropped this to a 2, maybe 4 for how strong it was before it all fell apart. The only thing consistent was the stunning animation and lovely ost.
And like, upon looking around I’ve heard that the studio was completely overwhelmed, censorship kicked a bunch of the plot’s ass, people were hospitalized to keep up with production, etc, and……it seems that once again this sad and unfortunate product of a toxic workplace. Naturally, the animators/storyboarders have my sympathy, and will always have my sympathy. They absolutely do not deserve this.
But I also feel consumers still have a right to express disappointment, so this is me judging what we were given, not the innocents involved.
Who do we get to properly blame for this? Capitalism???
Anyway, when I think about what this could have been, all I am is sad.
I’ll just end this here.
I don’t know what else to say.

4/100How to ruin a fantastic animeContinue on AniListI'm doing this review just to let out my disappointment and anger, so this is gonna be messy (like this special episode)
Also, sorry for the bad english but it’s not my native language.
When it first came out, I fucking loved WEP, it blew me away. I loved the characters, I loved the story in all its aspects, and I was strongly convinced that it would have become one of my favourite animes. Then, episode 12 came out. I can't describe how bad it made me feel; everything made zero sense, literally Z E R O sense, and it felt way, way too rushed and abstract. I usually love abstract endings (Evangelion is my favourite anime...) but that episode was just bad. Really bad. After that incredible flop, my expectations for this special were super-high. I wanted it to be the great Finale that WEP needed and deserved. But we all know that it isn't. Not even a little bit. This special is even worse than episode 12, it's even more messy and disappointing. Nothing makes sense, the characters are just a blank shadow of what they were before, and NOTHING is concluded. They could have take their time to explain at least the essential things, but no, they used the first half of the special to do a completely useless recap of the show, and once again they decided (or were obliged to) rush everything. It's like they didn't even try to make a satisfying ending. It feels like a way for the studio to say: you have your finale, we concluded the story, now we can forget this show for good.
There are some positives too, (...but I couldn't give less)
The soundtrack is great as usual, same for the artstyle. It's unique and stunning. The backgrounds are also beautiful. Yes, this is it with the positives, back to the negatives!
I hate the fact that we have had to wait so long for this. If it had come out one week after episode 12, or even 1 month, it would have been almost ok. But having to wait so long for this shit makes the pain even worse.
Now, the most important thing: the emotions
In this episode, there are none. Really. When I watched the series, I was always dragged by it. I was constantly feeling strong emotions, and I was insanely attached to the characters. Episode 13 erased all of this. Watching it made me feel… empty. I just didn’t care anymore. Am I exaggerating? Yes
Am I supposed to be so angry about this? No
But I am, and it was the last thing I could desire.
I still hope for a second season to come out, to finally conclude this story in a better way, but considering how bad this special was received by the audience, and the low sales for the blu-ray and dvd copies of the anime, I think this is the end. I really, really wanted to love this special episode, but it’s probably the worst finale I’ve ever seen for an anime.
