95/100Lovable Characters, well done animation, good music, only 5 mins long, what's not to like? Give it a watch!Continue on AniListBefore I get into the anime's review, I would like to tell you where it comes fro. Obey Me is a gacha visual novel of the otome dating sim genre produced by NTT Solmare Corp. It's a game where you collect cards and perform tasks/clear missions to unlock stories. The story is about simply witnessing and participating in the lives of the 7 avatars of hell after you've been chosen for an exchange program from earth alongside Solomon. The game itself is actually pretty good but I think the fact that they made this anime is what makes it admirably wonderful to me. I know a lot of games make anime like Hakuoki or Dramatical Murder, Uta No Prince Sama, etc, but I particularly like this one because of the attention the creators give to the game and the ammount of effort they put into giving their fans what they want. The game rarely ever needs in game transactions so it's pretty much a game you can just play without much worry. They made a short comic about the personalities of the characters. They have music sung by the voice actors, most of which actually is really good like Read My Heart by Satan's VA or Dreamscape by Belphegor's VA which is by far one of my most favourite songs. Anyway, onto the anime.
So the anime consists of 5 min episodes of "cute boys doing cute things" tho I think it's just really funny for anyone to enjoy it not only people who like watching that tag. There's about a min and a half of the ending which is just a wonderful party song you can vibe to, with some beautiful visuals as well. If you have played the game, you wouldnt need a lot of explanation about everyone but even if you just read the comic which is like 6 pages rn, you would know all you need to know. Tho even despite that, I think pretty much everyone's personalities can be understood in the first 2-3 episodes. I'll list out the characters in order of their ages. There's Lucifer, avatar of pride, the oldest brother who pretty much everyone is scared of, but he's a loving guy and cares for all his brothers. Mammon, the avatar of greed, he's like the guy everyone pretends to hate but he's most beloved to everyone, especially Lucifer. Leviathan, the avatar of envy, he's the ultimate gamer weeb guy who loves to collect anime stuff, your standard weeb on discord I suppose. Satan is the avatar of wrath, tho I dont think I've ever seen him angry lol. He's sweetest character after Belphie, who just loves animals. Asmodeus, the avatar of lust, our instagram beauty guru basically but he's definitely more fabulous than any girl you'll see on insta I can assure it. His voice actor does the opening for the game, which is a banger btw. We then have Beelzebub, the avatar of gluttony who, as is obvious, only eats and works out. His character is the cutest in the entire series being the really innocent little foodie. Belphegor is the avatar of sloth and is a very sleepy guy but he's also adorable and super sweet being the youngest out of his brothers, with a beautiful singing voice, I highly recommend listening to Dreamscape. Belphie and Beelzebub are also twins btw so they're both the youngest.Overall, I think, even tho it's short, this show is worth waiting for the episodes to come out and when they do, I watch with a huge smile on my face because I just love it. Every character is lovable even the extras, like Diavaolo the King of Devildom; Barbatos, his butler; Luke and Simeon, the Angels from heaven and Solomon, a human learning dark arts. The game is a bit slow to play and get used to, but the anime definitely would make you love the series regardless you want to play the game or not.
I rate this 95% solely because it manages to make you love the series in just a matter of 3-4 mins with great animation, beautiful character designs and overall just a lovely atmosphere.

50/100If you like overarching plots with dynamic characters, this is not the show for you.Continue on AniListObey Me! is an anime adaptation of the otome dating sim by the same name in NTT Solmare Corporations “Shall We Date” series. The five minute episodes follow the seven avatars of sin from the game and show brief glimpses of their lives without much relationship to the game. While this means it’s an easy show to watch without knowing anything about the game, the unfortunate part is, it’s not interesting enough to keep the attention of anyone who hasn’t played the game. I had high hopes for Obey Me! because of how interesting the story is in the game, but ultimately, those hopes were dashed without a sturdy plot or dynamic characters.
There is no plot connecting the episodes; it’s much like The Disastrous Life of Saiki K. in that regard. I’m a fan of that idea because it keeps everything short and sweet and lets you have a quick laugh. However, because of the poor pacing, each episode passed very slowly for me, and the five minutes felt almost like a full-length episode. There was also an episode that was a clip show with some of the seiyuus commentating—I found it interesting but not entertaining. Additionally, the last episode was a huge let down, as it was chibi versions of the side characters serving as a recap episode. Though it was helpful since the 12 episodes were spread over 6 months, it felt lackluster and downright lazy since there was no real content to the finale.
The characters themselves aren’t bad. They come straight from the game as seven demon brothers, the seven avatars of sin. The poorly executed part here was the lack of explanation of this; unless the viewer had played the game, they are left to piece together who each brother is and what he represents.
Additionally, there is minimal character development. I suppose that comes with the kind of show it is, given how it’s short views into the brothers’ lives, but character development is one of the most important things in my watching experience. With the lack of growth in any of the characters, this show fell very flat for me.
I can’t say the music or animation are anything spectacular. They’re both fairly average aspects to the show—they don’t detract from the show, but they’re also not the show’s saving grace.
In the end, I greatly believe the anime relies on the audience coming from the game to support the show, because none of the individual elements are particularly outstanding. If I had never played the game, I wouldn’t have a lick of interest in this show; that being said, I only continued to watch because of how short the episodes are and how few of them there are. However, I can understand how this show may be enjoyable to those who love the game and don't mind the episodic stories. But if you've never played the game and you prefer overarching plots with dynamic characters, then this is not the anime for you. This show certainly fits the “cute boys doing cute things” tag, because frankly, there isn’t anything else going on.
*a 5/10 on my rating scale is "below average but mildly enjoyable"
