90/100Bloody boxer meets bloody vampire and sparks fly in this short BL story.Continue on AniListA filet of rare beef, raw and tasty looking. Some blood leakage too.
Minor spoilers ahead!
I finished this last week, and I finally worked up the inspiration to put down a review. It originally was recommended to me by the lovely gremlin, Eviathan. What a great rec, thanks Evi!! An exciting boy love (BL) story with good amounts of drama and spice (especially that last episode!) However, it is a short series, on average of 5 min per episode, and I felt it wasn’t as fully developed as could’ve been, because of said shortness.
What makes this enjoyable is the sum of its parts, the presentation, and the characters. Individually, some of the themes are not all that original, but put together it is quite interesting! For example, the boxing aspect is there, we do have some nice (albeit quick) fight sequences (and abs…), and there are themes found in other boxing stories, anime or otherwise: old geezer coach, poor boy boxer, gambling, and mafia ties.
There’s also the vampire side of things, with the old and new, the reluctance to turn another, blood kink, some mild gore, etc. It is a little unusual, I will admit, to see the vampire’s day job and how he makes it work. And finally, the BL. The angst, the taboo love, and the reluctance (again).
Individually, these aren’t so unique, but put it all together, boxer loves a vampire and they’re both men, well I admit it’s a unique setup there. Actually, I’m relatively new in the BL world, so not sure how unique it is in the wide sense, so take my words with a grain of salt.
All together it works, though we hardly get much build up before the story moves along and goes to the conclusion, and then ends. I would personally have liked more characterization, interactions, buildup; but then on the flip I wouldn’t have gotten to the spicy part as quickly. ;p But even at the end, more of a conclusion or epilogue to their lives would have been nice too. But I always want a larger epilogue for stories I’ve enjoyed, so maybe it’s just me?
Beyond the story themes, what this series excels at is in the characters and the presentation. Mignon is a beefcake with an innocent puppy love expression … I don’t know how this mix worked but it did! The doctor-vampire, Young-On, is closed off and aloof. I really adored their interactions, of which mostly happen in the doc’s office; they are such opposites in personality yet the story, short as it is, makes viewers believe in them. I think the first scene of them talking seems cold, but it’s where Mignon really shines in facial expressions, so I liked it a lot anyways.
The presentation side of things, the animation and the music, give such a good vibe. Some 80’s synth? Okay, yeah! Some lo-fi trumpet? Yes plz. The soundtrack was oddly awesome. I say odd because… well… I don’t know. Now I think about it, it does kinda put me in the mind of old-school vampire movies, the edgy and sexy vampire stories of the 70s - 90s, before “Twilight” came along and made them sparkly. So yeah, good soundtrack.
Overall, 8/10. Though I have trouble recommending BL stories at large, if you’re already in the rabbit hole, I say dive into this one as well! And if you’re interested but scared of the sexy down and dirty bits, I say still give it a go, but skip the first five minutes of episode 12, and you’d still get the story.
Final thoughts: the same crew that wrote and made “Hyperventilation”, and it's interesting comparing and contrasting the two! Mignon is definitely the darker of the two, with more visceral scenes and a perhaps raunchier sex too.__
