  Under the ultra-extreme content lies a really solid psychological thriller, well worth the venture.

  Night Shift Nurses is a very extreme hentai anime. Not the most extreme, mind you, but definitely one of the harder ones for most people to stomach. This will not factor into my review of the series, because I'm not most people. Unless you're incredibly kinky, morbidly curious, or have a desire to test your mettle, however, you may prefer to steer clear of this one.

  Writing: First and foremost, I must address this. This might sound odd to many of you, but this show actually has an extremely strong storyline. Night Shift Nurses does not fall into the same trap that other hentai series do--the "as long as there's a lot of sex and lonely men can get off on it, nothing else about the production really matters" mindset. The producers of this series went the distance necessary not only to make the series a good hentai, but a good anime.

  The story begins with a fairly generic plotline, as the synopsis no doubt states: A devious doctor is recruited by the head of the hospital to train nurses for a new ward being constructed, in which the women will perform sexual acts for wealthy businessmen and politicians in order to bolster the hospital's income. That's nothing to write home about. But, as the story progresses, it expands into so much more than that--ulterior motives, characters (understandably) driven to madness, wool pulled over eyes, and enough plot twists to make Shyamalan proud. I can't go into detail without crossing into spoiler territory, of course, but if you are a fan of psychological thrillers and character-driven storylines, this show has what you're looking for. I can also say that the writing is very realistic in how the characters deal with conflict and the general setting of the series--no crazy gene splicing, no vampires, no swords and no sorcery.

  Art: Now, the content... there's a lot of scat. That's the big thing that's going to make most people want to avoid this show like the plague. If you don't mind it, it's a great series to watch, but if you just can't stomach it, don't make the venture. Inflation, bondage, and S/M are also frequent. For those of you who don't mind all this (ie, perverts like me), the artwork is a cut above most hentai. It's actually quite well-drawn and anatomically correct. You won't find any women with K cups or genitalia the size of Florida here. The art is exceptional under the conditions of this production.

  Sound is hard to judge. Like the vast majority of hentai, the dub for this one is admittedly terrible. The music is fairly catchy and well-suited to the environment, however, and the Japanese dub has no flaws as far as I can detect, so overall, I would give sound a positive score.

  In the end, there's only one hentai series with a story as rich as this and a production committee who took it as seriously as they did, so if you're a serious hentai viewer who's looking for that rare good watch--or, if you're a serious anime viewer who's able and willing to stomach some extreme content--then this is definitely a series to pick up.

  If the content is too much for you? Well, that's all right, too--to each his own. But don't make the mistake of thinking that extreme content is equivalent to a bad hentai, because this is most certainly not the case.
