  Charm Remains, but Ultimately a Slogfest

  Iruma-kun was an anime that worked very well as a wonderful “Saturday Morning Cartoon” type of show. Decent comedy, action, and the lovable characters shaped what were two solid seasons. While this season did have some decent moments, it ultimately got hampered by staying in the same setting for most of the season, surrounding the Harvest Festival, which felt a very long, drawn-out arc. It moves away from the school setting, which was where the charm for me was, and into a competition of sorts between the classes. The season jumps around between characters, and balances development out for them, but it forgets what the main enjoyment point was, which was seeing Iruma and his two best friends, Asmodeus and Clara, interact and have fun with each other.

  The animation and production overall was fine, as it was around the same quality as the first two seasons had. The big scenes looked good, and the meaningful ones were well executed. As for the OP a bit disappointing, and the ED was quite awful.

  The biggest problem though, was that even though each character had their own developments, they didn’t feel very meaningful, rather, they felt quite shallow. Sure, each of them has their breakthroughs and good moments, but they were unfortunately quite forgettable. This might just be a me thing, but the characters that most people love most (Ameri, Clara, Asmodeus), just didn’t show up enough, and I just didn’t care about the other characters to really be invested in the story. One new character who I did enjoy watching was Bachiko, who was quite the funny mentor for Iruma, but I wish she got more screen time as well.

  Ultimately, the season simply starts out too slow for me to care for what happened at the end of the arc, and I wanted it to be over. I did enjoy some of the season to an extent, but nowhere near the level I did for Season 1 and 2, which delivered entertainment at more of a consistent quality than this season, which felt comparatively boring.

  Let’s face the facts though, Iruma-kun provides NHK with quite the return of funds, and unless something major changes, I doubt this will be the last season of the show. Is it a lack of passion from the staff? Just poor direction? Or something more? It just felt something was missing from this season. I’m not gonna lie, it felt a little lazy, with the constant recaps shown, and the dragging with the needless cliffhangers. I really hope that this season was a one-off, and Iruma-kun can get back to being the charming show it once was. Let’s hope the money didn’t get to their heads.

  I will say this though. If you haven’t watched this season of Iruma-kun yet, a binge might function better and make you enjoy it more than how I watched this, which was in a weekly format. If a Season 4 is on the horizon, I hope it can get paced better, with more intrigue than this season provided.

  A Charming Disappointment

  Just like everyone of my other reviews I am judging this season based strictly on it and it's two previous seasons, not as an adaptation to the manga which I have never read and do not plan on doing so if you were looking for that kind of review you won't find it here. Also theres SPOILERS

  CONTEXT: (skip if you don't care)
  I've been in a reviewing kind of mood and I want to cover these shows when I'm actually fresh on them and I absolutely loved the previous seasons so I was really looking forward to this season therefore I feel like I want to say how I felt about it but I may have had my expectation set too high so take that how you will. Also I always say this in all my reviews but please don't take this as a personal attack on you if you don't agree. My standards are just different not better. Also as always punctuation isn't important to me on these reviews so don't expect perfection but it still should be readable and understandable so if it isn't lemme know.   CHARMING:
  Being a big fan of the previous seasons, this is show that just simply works for me, and to clarify I enjoyed this season but you can enjoy something and still feel disappointed by it. But as far as the stuff that stays the same quality or is just good, this show still has the light hearted feel of the previous seasons and the fun cast of characters that go along with it. It also still has the fantastic art style that helped make the show originally stand out. I will also say it was nice that they addressed iruma dealing with his terrible past. Basically what I'm saying is if you liked the other seaons you will still most likely enjoy this one; it by no means loses everything that made it fun to begin with thats not what I'm trying to say with this review.

  DISAPPOINTMENT:
  So I'm not sure how most people feel about this but tournaments arcs in these shows are typically kind of bad, they drag on too long and barely progess the wider story and iruma is no exception for me. This season spent the whole time just dallying around on an honestly boring tournament, like the characters aren't even allow to fight each other without being disqualified. It also barely moves ahead the story or character development, the antagonists are basically shown once and hardly do anything except mess with the tournament and not even directly. That one guy that iruma keeps having visions of (i assume the last demon king or whatever) shows up once and feels like its more to remind the audience that the writer didn't forget about him less than it actually ment something. To, summarize the season kinda just dicks around for 21 episodes and hardly progresses anything which sucks because the previous seasons moved just enough to never make it feel too slow but they also never had this snail's pace with small bread crumbs of progression thrown in there occasionally.

  CONCLUSION:
  if you really like the last two seasons, you will probably still like this season on a basic level but you should expect some disappointment. The last thing I have to add is that I hope season 4 picks it back up
