I thought I’d finally escaped my hellish life when I died in an airplane crash, but I fell into another nightmare when I awoke as Rudbeckia de Borgia, a minor villain from a historical novel destined to die at the hands of her husband, Iske van Omerta. Surviving with the dysfunctional Borgia family is hard enough, but now I have to marry the man who will kill me! Still, it’s okay, I just have to convince Iske, his family, and all his countrymen that I’m completely harmless! How hard can that be?

i'm rather biased regarding this series and can't praise it enough, but i believe it is for a reason, so brace yourself for unashamed gushing #WILL CONTAIN MAJOR SPOILERS + TRIGGER WARNING Glossary: FL, Ruby-female lead; ML, Izek-male lead ___ __Summary:__ I thought I’d finally escaped my hellish life when I died in an airplane crash, but I fell into another nightmare when I awoke as Rudbeckia de Borgia, a minor villain from a historical novel destined to die at the hands of her husband, Izek van Omerta. Surviving with the dysfunctional Borgia family is hard enough, but now I have to marry the man who will kill me! Still, it’s okay, I just have to convince Izek, his family, and all his countrymen that I’m completely harmless! How hard can that be? ___ The first thing to talk about is, of course, the art because I'm an aspiring artist and am really noticing little things in art that makes it truly good. I know I've talked about atmosphere in manga/manhwa art in every review I've written so far, but I can't stop, as it is never talked about enough and plays an extremely important role in every piece of great art. This series builds mood *wonderfully* with its art, and I've gotta appreciate that. It's a delight in terms of visual imagery too: I love the style, it's just the right amount of detailed, and overall very pleasing to look at. My favorite panels because I decided to grace your eyes with their beauty: ___ The plot is just *chef's kiss*. One unique thing is how unreliable the narrative is, as we're seeing the story unfold from the deeply traumatized FL's lenses, and I doubt that we'd ever notice it on first reading. Peeling off the layers of her thoughts to uncover the truth on rereading was certainly interesting, and so was reading all the analyses lmao. Mostly, it's some extremely painful and well written angst, but there is budding romance in the later chapters, which makes it all the more sweet and satisfying. The story's strongly character-focused and I think the portrayal of trauma is very well done, in both of the leads, affecting them each differently. From Ruby's breaking down and apologizing when her trauma surfaces, to how Izek faces and treats others and how emotionally-stunted he appears to be. The way they bond and help each other get over all the trauma (in the later chapters when their drama is resolved and they stop tormenting each other at least) is just *beautiful* and I don't think I could describe it accurately, sooooooooooo you should just see it for yourself. They are both well-written in my opinion. Ruby, the main character, is a trauma-ridden individual and it hurts *so* bad to see the affects said trauma has on her, and the portrayal feels very realistic. She's a damsel in distress indeed, but for valid reasons. She pretends to be your typical lovesick damsel in distress to protect herself (honestly she deserves an Oscar for all the acting she does), but when all the glamor falls off, what's left is just a fragile, hurt, kind human, who is indeed, distressed. Feels, man. The same could be said for the ML's backstory....... Let's say that while he hasn't gone through as much pain as our FL, he certainly has had his share. As we see through FL's POV from the first 30 or so chapters, he is a exaggeratedly condescending scary asswipe. As I said, FL is an unreliable narrator and he definitely appeared worse than he actually was, but there was still *huge* character development to be made, and the story delivered wonderfully. He had already displayed crooked actions of consideration in early chapters, but the way he realized his mistakes and apologized for them and actively tried to make amends is great development for me. Contrary to the lead's writting, I think most side characters (except for a few of the ML's family members) fall pretty flat, especially the antagonists. What exactly is the motivation of the white lotus woman who wants the male lead's love? The main antagonist, FL's half-brother and abuser, is not fleshed out at all, though he certainly strikes me as terrifying, because FL's trauma responses are really something....His heinous acts are certainly there, but as a character, he's bland as fuck and I want him feel real pain then fuck off from the story forever. We all know the reason why he did the things he did is because he's a sick fuck, but I want multi-faceted villains! Well, I supposed you can't have everything, and other aspects of the story more than makes up for its flaws. ___ What can I say more? I just really love this story, and I hope you check it out if you haven't already! RoseFaerie
100/100Two traumatized individuals come together and learn how to love, now with carnivorous Totoros.Continue on AniListI am just reading way too many good manga. Like I feel like I'm losing credibility as a reviewer since the last 3 manga I read were 10's for me, including this one. I need to read some more trash to cleanse myself. I do think it was nice to read an otome isekai again, since I feel like I haven't reviewed a reincarnation isekai in forever, and this story was just that good. Its portrayal of trauma and its effects is super interesting and adds a lot to the manga.
Our protagonist has reincarnated as the villainess of a novel, Rudbeckia de Borgia, who is killed by her husband, Iske van Omerta. She was abused in her past life by her socialite family, but she finds that her new life in the de Borgia family as the daughter of the Pope is no different. When she enters an arranged marriage with Iske, she gets the chance to leave her abusive family behind, but she must enter a relationship and live with the man who will one day end her life. In order to survive, Rudbeckia must convince Iske and everyone in his family that she's not a threat.
I always appreciate it when these types of series reference the characters' past lives often. Rudbeckia, who I will refer to as Ruby for the rest of the review since her nickname is more convenient and easier for me to write, has very intense memories of her past life, which helped build who she is at the start of the manga. She questions why she even wants to survive and why her survival instincts kick in, since she wanted to die in her past life, and her current life is no different. She has had an eating disorder in both lives because food is the only thing she can control and the only thing she can depend on. From her beloved sister's suicide in her previous life to the beatings she receives from her creepy brother, I cannot even fathom the amount of hopelessness Ruby feels.
The narration of the story is very skewed. Ruby is in denial of her severe PTSD, since she was never allowed to show that anything is wrong with her, and she deals with her trauma the way she deals with her abuse, burying it and pretending she's fine. Ruby is an unreliable narrator. After all the horrible things she endured, she couldn't fathom anyone taking her side. She believes everyone is against her and that she must put on acts to prevent them from killing her. She interprets everything anyone says to her in the worst possible way since that's what she's used to. There's a reason this is called "How to Win My Husband Over", or "How to Get My Husband on My Side" depending on the translation. She doesn't believe anyone is on her side, so she just tries to endear herself to other people in the hopes they won't abuse or kill her.
She perceives Iske as worse than he is. His resting bitch face is seen as intentional, targeted glares at Ruby. His cold and emotionless exterior is seen as contempt for her. He does do and say rude and terrible things in the beginning, but we see his perspective, and he grows as a person. He has his own trauma even if it wasn't as explored as Ruby's due to the story mostly being told through her lens. His family was broken, and he and his sister had to live with their mother's emotional instability, depression, and body image issues from an early age to the point where she threatened to kill herself in front of everyone if his sister spoke a word about her condition. Both he and his sister are emotionally stunted in a variety of ways, and emotional expression is completely foreign to them. I wonder what else happened to make Iske turn out this way.
This is all about the relationship between two struggling individuals, and how they move past their trauma as they fall in love. Iske's character development was the catalyst for a real relationship to develop since a big part of it was him figuring out that Ruby was traumatized and putting the little hints she dropped together. When he becomes more conscious of his actions, and when Ruby figures out that he doesn't have ill intent they begin to break through to each other and build a relationship. I know the chapters I've read are just the tip of the iceberg and a lot more seems to go on in the novels from the reactions I saw. One of my friends and the author of the other How to Win My Husband Over review read the novels and made me super curious about what happens.
The art is gorgeous. Everyone in it has a ridiculously attractive design. I'm so jealous of how manageable Ruby's hair seems to be. (I relate more to Yona from Yona of the Dawn and her frustration with how unruly it can be.) The outfits are stunning, from the ballgowns to the more practical military designs. (We don't talk about Iske's ridiculously impractical spy outfit that he wears to the banquet. I was actually laughing. I feel like so much emotion is conveyed, and I think it's generally spectacular with its character designs.
This manhwa is just beautifully written, and I think it provides an intense and intimate view of a character with intense trauma and PTSD. It also has a carnivorous Totoro in it, so that's just bonus points! There's so much to love about this (but that list doesn't include Ruby's creepy possessive brother, who is reeeally reminding me of certain Roxana characters...) I think the emotional complexity and impact of the story and art has me enthralled, and I am excited to see more of what this story has to offer when it's completed.
