65/100I thought that nearly all manwha and manhua were unsaveable abominations, but I suppose not. Feels unfinished however.Continue on AniListYou know, my initial thoughts of manhua and manwha was that the experience of reading it was somewhat similar to a night out of drinking in south london and waking up with a hangover in the sahara desert, waking up and thinking how on god's earth did I even get here?
However, I generally think that the experience of reading "The SIlver Wolf" is more similar to going out for a night of drinking in south london and waking up in a hooker's bedroom with your wallet stolen.
To elaborate on that, it could be worse. While reading The Silver Wolf I found myself pleasantly surprised by the fact that I was reading something that didn't feel like I was getting airlifted 2700 miles away from my initial location.
I found that the plot and characters were generally quite enjoyable, the main characters were funny and had decent development going into them. I was particulalry surprised when I was 12 chapters in and Zuoyi had not developed a harem larger than an amish community. The supporting characters are not left in the dark as well, many of them getting at least some development instead of being left in the desolatate status of plot device characters that I don't remember the name of. I actually remember all the names of the characters, unusual since I don't even remember my mother's own birthday. Generally, they all had good little backstories as well.
But it's not all sunshines and rainbows, you probably noticed my repeated use of "generally" and this word really sums up my experience. I.e. "The plot was GENERALLY quite good", "I GENERALLY found the pacing good", "GENERALLY this was a good read"
Speaking of pacing, this is probably where "The Silver wolf" started to wane for me a bit.
The pacing seemed to be about as consistent as a schizophrenic man on LSD, not that it was all bad.
I'm sure that a schizophrenic man on LSD would be quite funny to watch. But there really were some questionable bits that made me really wonder if it was all as great as I made it out to be when I initially started reading. (Getting into slight spoiler territories) there was one bit where one of the main characters, Zuoyi, goes missing for a month before being found by the other main character who was annoyed that he tried to ditch her for her safety blah blah blah. All sounds fine and dandy but that's until you realise that all this happens in just over half a chapter. The silver wolf has officially ended according to BiliBili Comics but there also seemed to be a considerable amount of unexplained things. From what I've reread, I haven't found any explanations to these. and I'm curious to see if anybody else saw as many as I did. (Drop a comment if you saw any while reading, I'm quite interested to see if it was just me)
Now while I would generally like to say this was a very good read despite all it's faults, I somewhat have to reconsider this every time it pops into my head. This is due to the ending.
After reading this ending I realized how the people the mafia tied cinderblocks to and chucked into rivers felt. Being dragged to the very bottom in about 30 seconds before wishing that you never got involved with the bastards in the first place.
It really was like all the worst qualities of the comic decided to come together to smash me over the head like any dedicated British gang would do.
The pacing detonated and the plot stabbed itself in the span of a single chapter, a hole of unexplanation promptly opened up in the real world and ate my dog, and I slammed my head into my desk wondering where it all went wrong. Very unfulfilling.
Honestly, if this wasn't the end I'd be less harsh and say something like:
"What a bold and daring cliifhanger!"
Okay not really but I wouldn't be half as annoyed. All in all, The Silver Wolf was a mostly enjoyable read UNTIL the end. I really hope that this not the end for this story, because that would be a damn shame.
Rating:
65/100
Probably would be an 85 if the ending wasn't written by my dog that got sucked into another dimension.
