DESCRIPTION
When an alien race known as the Oni invade Earth, the chronically unlucky and unapologetically lecherous Ataru Moroboshi is selected as humanity’s representative in a duel for the fate of the planet! His opponent is Lum, the Oni’s very pretty princess, and it’s only thanks to Ataru’s unscrupulous behavior that he’s able to scrape out a win in a treacherous game of tag against her. Ataru thinks he’s had his lucky break at last, but when Lum takes a shine to him off the battlefield, the conflict follows him home as Lum invades not only planet Earth, but also the womanizing Ataru’s love life!

68/100A Series Where You Just Gotta Turn Off That BrainContinue on AniListRumiko Takahashi’s gag manga has been brought to life, yet again. This is a remake of an older series we never asked for, but in the end, I’m glad this remake exists, as it’s a way for the newer generation of anime fans to watch a show with an older style of dialogue and humour, with more modernized animation. Admittedly, I’ve only skimmed through some of the original 1981 version, but I could tell that the remake is an extremely truncated version of the original. That said, as I’m someone who only watched the remake, I can still say that I more or less enjoyed what was presented.
This show is just simple, dumb comedy, that sometimes works really well, and sometimes flops on its face, and that’s because comedy is subjective, a phrase I’m sure many of you will have heard when comedy is discussed in a more analytical mindset. It’s inevitable that some jokes land, and some don’t, but when they land, they are genuinely quite hilarious. It embraces how stupid it is, it never really escapes its stupidity, and that’s fine. Don’t expect any semblance of a plot, or much progression in romance, it’s more of an episodic comedy than anything else, though some episodes build upon previous ones.
The characters are just a big cast of idiots. Ataru is someone you want to just punch. He’s basically unlikable in every way, and the show realizes that, so they double down on making him as scummy as possible. He flirts with every girl he meets, and no one around him has a good time.
As for Lum, she’s often called as “the first waifu”. She embodies most of the qualities that waifus have nowadays, but that’s about it. She gets jealous, and she zaps people.
The side characters have their moments, and each have their gimmicks. I suppose that’s a problem of the show, with the characters being so gimmicky and one-note, but in a gag comedy like this, it doesn’t really matter.
The modernized animation will definitely bring more viewers into this series, and make this show more accessible, which is always a welcome thing. However, I would venture a guess that the old style also worked well in its own way.
I would also like to highlight that both openings and endings were absolute bangers, and I enjoyed listening to them all. Shout out to MAISONdes and their featured artists for their performances.
Overall, this show was a decent watch, once I learned to not take it remotely seriously. It’s simply a dumb comedy, and it might work for you, it might not work for you. One thing is for sure though, I’ll definitely be checking out the original in a bit more detail, as there’s probably some more meaningful storytelling to be found there.

80/100I love Urusei YatsuraContinue on AniListUrusei is the last anime I thought I'd like yet it made it's way into my heart.
Now I don't care about presenting you the anime let's just get onto why I love it and why I didn't think I would.
I thought Urusei Yatsura was a "pervert/voyeur" anime.
And by pervert I don't mean it as "ohhh no, fanservice, boobs I can't watch this anymore, it ruined my whole experience !" I mean it as a delusional phantasm with mere palliative effects for it's viewers. The whole point of these stories is to make it's viewers virtually obtain something they can't have in real life, trapping them into being comforted in their miserable state and using their emotions and lust for the sake of selling. It's malicious and that's what I mean by pervert anime. (third time I talk about this in a review lmao)
With this paragraph you can tell how far I was from liking this anime. I expected it to be about some random waifu who completely and absolutely love a nobody despite him not deserving it. And after watching the first few episodes well... My worries were pretty much confirmed except for Ataru (mc boy) actually having a personnality which kinda invalidated the perverted self-insert story theory.
I was also pissed off with the Ataru/Shinobu romance b#llshit that made no sense. And after few other episodes, I realized how utterly wrong I was. To me, this anime is nothing perverted, if anything it's full of love and good intentions for it's viewers.
Ataru's archetype is basically that bratty kid who'd really to feel a breast or two (doryoku mirai...). I expected good ol personnality-less mc-kun so it was a good surprise honestly. And what's good is that his attitude isn't an excuse for the author to make it a one sided gender slander thing like "oh look how men are beasts that only care about sex". Shinobu (who's a female) is comically seen as shallow as she was the inital love interest of Ataru but she shifted to the "school prince" because of his looks and status. Ataru wants the dude dead but he ain't even mad at Shinobu.
Who would prefer a pathetic dude with no future to an intelligent dude from a good family who holds one ? Though, the contrary could also be said. What kind of fool would only search for looks and material things in their partner ? That's basically the anime. It mocks boys and girls or men and women for their habits of falling in love with anyone for stupid reasons : looks or status. It isn't seen as something illogical but it's still being made fun of even though it's natural and comprehensive behaviour.
It isn't a one gender slander thing or a perverted anime. Urusei Yatsura is also not another waifu oblige anime where all the main girls are just perfect and the guy is the only the dense worthless dude with flaws. No character is put on a pedestal for "husbando" or "waifu" sake. They're all being made fun of, they're all ridicule and in that sense, they're all equal.
It's a wholesome anime with relatable stuff, as much as it is exaggerated for comedic purpose, it's episodic and self-aware and Idk it's just good man.
To conclude, I find Ataru and Lum's romance interesting. As I said earlier, all the teens in the story "fall in love" for dumb reasons : grudges, status, looks, jealousy, lust etc but Lum is the only character who romantically like Ataru for who he is, not for societal titles and Ataru, despite being attracted to Lum, hates her but slowly falls for her, not for her looks but for the genuine loving and caring person she is. It's an unrealistic yet sweet version of love that reminds you what you really want in your partner. There's a huge difference between that and the destructive self insert I described earlier. Some people probably found it unfuny, boring, trash or embarassing but I don't care, I enjoyed it, it has a meaning and from my perspective it perfectly is what it's trying to be and it's all that matters.

70/100Doreamon with harem elementsContinue on AniListhttps://anilist.co/anime/143277/Urusei-Yatsura-2022/ Urusei Yatsura is this year's "remake of a beloved classic" and it was pretty fun. I haven't watched the classic and know nothing about this IP, except the fact that it features a pikachu waifu and also the pioneer of the whole harem tropes. So after watching episode 1, more than anything, I got massive Doreamon vibes. It was oddly nostalgic, about a show I never watched.
It all starts when a certain oni/alien invades Earth with his entire army but to reduce casualties, they challenge humanity to a "battle" by randomly selecting one human to one oni. This random human, happens to be a perverted high school boy named "Ataru Moroboshi", this oni-alien happens to be the pretty princess, tiger-stripped beauty named "Lum", and this 'battle' happens to be the good-old fashioned "Onigokko (Game of Tag)". After a lot of hurdles, Ataru wins the game by stripping her bare naked while their battle is being telecasted to both races. Though Ataru is now recognized as the scum he is, Lum, however forms a deep love with him. And so starts the oddity called "Urusei Yatsura".
Now if that doesn't interest you, something else might do, but I think it's definitely worth checking out.Comedy and Characters The basic format of the show is pretty simple.
Here is a group of odd characters. Here is a group of odd situations. Now let's throw them together and see what chaos will happen.
That's it. I know I said this earlier but I just can't unsee the similarities to this and Doreamon.
Ataru is Nobita if he's more perverted, Lum is a mix of Doreamon & Pikachu in waifu form, Shinobu is Shizuka if she happens to love wrestling, Mendo is Suniyo except he actually looks good, Ataru parents are much like Nobita parents except they're more open about their son's failure, and Dakisugi... I guess we don't have someone as sane as him in this Anime.
And of course, since this is a harem we have a lot of female characters; the shrine maiden, the tomboy, the school nurse, the female friends of Lum, their mothers...
But what's a bit surprising is how much it avoided the stereotypes. For instance, Shinobu could've been the easy childhood tsundere with a good heart but she doesn't mind dating even another girl if it's for money (she can also be a bit bitchy at times), Ran could've been an easy Yandere but she doesn't question their friendship - she just holds a grudge, Sakura could've easily been the Ara Ara one-saan but she actually has a boyfriend and the list can go on. Though, not everyone got that treatment, like Ryuunosuke, who's still the stereotypical tomboy who wants to be more girly.
The show embraces its character flaws into its oddities which makes for a bizarre and comedic ride. Though, you may have to take occasional breaks on this trip.Hinges on the Binge There are two reasons why I don't recommend slapstick comedies to binge.
- The surreality becomes a familiarity: We don't usually see people punching each other into the air or hitting someone with a comically large mallet. We don't usually see odd things to happen (unless you're living in Florida or Ohio) so it's that sense of wonder that keeps things fresh. If you get familiar, however...
- ...it just won't be fun anymore: Once you stop having fun with the show, you've basically given yourself a reason to drop it.
Urusei Yatsura falls into both these flaws but one more serious flaw would be:
Having no overall plot: Compare this to something like Konosuba or Grand Blue, which are also Slapstick/surreal/harem humor, are more engaging because they at least have mini arcs to know where it's going. Urusei Yatsura is a completely episodic Anime, there's something new in every episode but most of these episodes are disjointed from every other episode, so it lacks that extra hook to be engaging.Miscellaneous - A shoutout to David Pro and the producers for bringing some of the finest voice actors into the scene. You probably have at least one of your favorite VAs voice acted in this Anime.
- One more shoutout to David Pro and it's animators cause anime looks gorgeous. Especially the character design and fashion are main attractions.
Conclusion Might not be the most funny Anime you've ever seen, or might not live to the classic, but for what it is, it's a bizarre ride full of oddities and a heart that believes in it.
