100/100How an anime not even on my radar became my favorite Spring SeasonalContinue on AniListKamikatsu was so outside of my expectations for an isekai that I just fell more in love with each episode despite such a strong start. An anime I didn't even consider watching until half the season was over, I couldn't have fallen harder or watched those first 7 episodes faster! Our cast is immaculate with
- Yukito being one of my favorite manipulative bastard protagonists I've ever seen(and his backstory fits the idea so well).
- Mitama always putting a smile on my face with her antics and it's clear that the production team really liked her as well.
- Roy fitting the what I would call "Zenitsu role" yet unlike bad series he always get punished for being an absolute horrible annoying character.
- All the archons generally working really well in their roles and never feeling like they don't belong.
- Funni sisters and Rishu just being... the best honestly.
I also wanna praise the artstyle, the funny CGI was always putting a smile on my face because once you're in on the joke you realize, oh Mitama, this is one of the funniest and high energy anime comedies. The artstyle is what I'd probably consider "begging for epileptic seizures" a lot of the time but honestly that's my style I have no taste besides pretty colors. The cuts to pixel art are my favorite choices for directing an anime besides the way that Monogatari cuts away for gags. Some might say that the pixel art is so they can be "lazy" but I think Kamikatsu isn't afraid to perfectly use the tools at their disposal to make sure the visuals are never boring. Plus if you are dissing it only because it's pixel art I think you're just boring.
The story and it's themes are put together so well that I don't think I could ever do better, and it's one of the reasons I want to experience more media. The story quickly goes down a path that you would never expect from a seasonal isekai and I can only give my highest praise for that.
As well the ecchi in this series is something that caters to me very well. The degeneracy that this series gets up to is some of the most cracked I've seen in a non-eroge and was so fetishy that it reminds me of how great anime can be when it does something most other mediums refuse to.
Voice acting in this series brought out the comedy to the insane level that it sits at, and the OP/ED are straight addicting, while also not really being what I usually expect from an anime.
Personally I think this was one of the best anime to come out this year in an already stacked Spring 2023 season, and I'd recommend it to only my most degenerate anime fans, but it's definitely a big ask and I know they won't be as into it as I am, but please give KamiKatsu a shot!

80/100One of the funniest shows of 2023Continue on AniListKamiKatsu: Working for God in a Godless World is a Fantasy-Isekai, Comedy manga by Aoi Akashiro. It was adapted into a 12-episode anime by Studio Palette. This is their first solo project.
I remember dismissing this show while overviewing Spring 2023, the trailer and concept did not capture my interest. Later, I saw videos trending of the incredibly bad CGI and infamous farming scene, where the studio took live-action footage and simply painted over it. According to sources (confirmed via the author’s Twitter), much of the absurd production was intentional, saving animation costs and also trolling.
The premise is fairly unique. The MC Yukito is thrown into the ocean by his father and his religious cult, devoted to God Mitama. As he drowns, Yukito wishes for a religion-free world. Awakened abruptly by a handjob, he finds himself in a faithless, bleak world ruled by an evil Empire. Eventually, God Mitama appears before him, inspiring Yukito to establish a Mitama-centric cult, harnessing her power to reshape the world.
This is one of the most pleasant surprises of 2023, a very entertaining watch. This show has a heavy focus on its absurd comedy, rivaling or even surpassing the absurdity seen in Konosuba. You have a similar concept of a level-headed main character, slowly losing their mind of the surrounding unhinged side characters. This show is very explicit, ridiculous, offensive, and does not make much sense.
Our heroes face struggles such as when they tried to infiltrate a sex cult. Where members try to out-whore one another and become the #1 slut. Then our party is put under a horny spell and the animation style changes to that of a low-budget hentai. Yukito trying to threaten a woman with an icy glare, that alone being enough of a trigger for her to envision a consensual-nonconsensual sex scene and pass out, leaving our MC in the unique situation of having to explain that “no I didn’t do anything” and she just “orgasmed and passed out on her own”.
Consistency is not something the show follows, either intentionally or unintentionally, but the show is too stupid for you to take it seriously. One moment you have a Kaiju as large as multiple mountains.. only for it to be shrunken down in the next scene and hit by truck-kun. With no explanation or elaboration, then moving on to business as usual.
Being aired at the same time as Konosuba’s spin-off about Megumim. Of the two, KamiKatsu was easily the more entertaining one.
In the sea of generic Isekai protagonists, Yukito is a fun character to follow, being intelligent, manipulative, and snarky. His disdain for religion, stemming from his father's cult ruining his past life, evolves as he witnesses the bleakness of the new world.
Mitama is your annoying loli God, and ultimately the plot device for the story. She has a large affection towards Yukito, which the latter exploits to fulfill his goals.
The side characters are a lot of fun. The sisters always made me laugh with their lewdness and facial reactions, Loki makes for a pretty good antagonist, and Roy is one of the characters of all time.. being so down bad, he would break the world record for the number of possible restraining orders given to a single person.
On a serious note, the animation is good despite the horrible CGI monsters. The voice acting is great, you can tell the voice actors had a ton of fun and the music choice is pretty solid.
Is this show worth a watch? If you enjoy Konosuba you will love this show a lot.
And I would say it's one of the best shows of the year.
