75/100Gamer boy got himself a college girl.Continue on AniListhttps://anilist.co/anime/154965/My-Love-Story-with-Yamadakun-at-Lv999/ ##### This is the 2nd time I'm reviewing a seasonal involving E-Sports. Is this is a sign? Thinking about it now, I'm kinda surprised that Yamada Lv. 999 is actually the popular romcom this season, beating Over the Moon S2, Insomniacs, Dangers in my Heart, Skip & Loafer, and even Kaguya finale; at least that's what the numbers say.
Note: This is the only romcom I've watched this season. I've read Dangers in my Heart and Insomniacs for a good amount of chapters, so I skipped the Anime. Heard nothing but praise for Skip & Loafer even way before the anime came out but I'm kinda postponing on it for a few days. Haven't watched Tonikaku S1, or Kaguya S2 so I can't talk about them.
It seems like everyone collectively agreed that between all the popular battle shounens and psychological seinens, this is the safe and cute seasonal romcom that's there just to chillax.I like to remind people that this is a Madhouse shoujo Anime, and that's actually the main reason I've picked this, because Madhouse made a shoujo sports Anime that I really liked. Except Loving Yamada isn't a sports Anime, it's an E-Sports Anime.
Yamada is the good-looking quiet chick magnet and also a pro gamer, while Akane is a cute & klutzy freshly dumped college girl. After some karmic events, Akane starts crying in the middle of a gaming event, a ball of sunshine melting in the middle of everyone, until an ice cold prince approaches and asks, "Is this your shoe?", while holding her dropped heal. The boy met the girl.
As previously implied, the stakes are pretty low and so is the emotional punch. The characters would be dealing with breakup, jealousy, first love, moving on and all the regular romcom stuff told with a soft tone. It isn't particularly groundbreaking in the way it handles its themes, but it's still a relaxing watch with all the slow pace.
The direction is something I like in this one. Reminds me of chihayafuru, except it isn't as dynamic since despite being an Anime about online gamers, the focus was more on their real life interactions, than their in-game skills. It focusses more on their mundane situations, relationships (especially with Akane), and situational chibbi gags. The art looks like pencil sketched, which is well suited for a laid back setup. One more that adds to the tone is the Lo-fi background score. Really soothing at times.
As for the anime, it's incomplete. They gave a bit of a satisfying conclusion and left room for continuation, but nothing's confirmed so far. As for the story, depending on who you root for, the ending would be different. But since this is a regular seasonal, I'm pretty sure most people align with the story's conclusion. Because, god damn! No matter how much generic romcoms I watch, they somehow always manage to make the confessions very special. And the adorable confession at the end in this one, left a big smile.
Conclusion This is yet another seasonal anime where it's more about fun, and less about substance & impact. If you are in for the cute characters, laid back tone, and/or care the romance, this'll help as a short break.

40/100awful comedy, childish drama, zero romance. Severely overratedContinue on AniListIf you want to turn your brain off and watch some childish drama with a hot guy this is it. This show sucks as a romance, comedy, and drama. Whether you would enjoy really depends on what you are looking for. If you want something chill, sure this does it I guess, but no matter how much a fan you may be of the show, you must admit its plot and character flaws are extremely detrimental.
Plot: [3/10]- Holy shit this was boring, each episode could have been done in 5-10 minutes. The main character gets dumped and spends a bunch of time playing this video game. Here she meets the love interest and some other guy who poses as a girl online (wtf) who is good friends with the love interest. They meet up irl and the guy’s sister who’s like 12 starts beefing with MC. They end up happily ever after. Then love triangle is introduced. Amidst all this, the MC starts getting all clingy and needy over the MC with about 10 minutes per episode of just sound effects and scenes of her getting aroused by him as they stare at each other due to some random ass misunderstanding or circumstance such as randomly passing out with the guy ready and waiting to save her. Apparently, this is good romantic writing. Somehow the love interest becomes attracted to her despite being called in to save her from being drunk, sick, and her pc getting broken. Extremely boring I found myself watching the series at 1.5 speed to stay awake.
Characters: [3/10]: Akane isn’t a terrible MC and she wasn’t done justice compared to how she was in the manga according to other reviews. In any case, within the anime, she is pretty badly written. But oh boy the love interest, he is far worse, a blatant fanservice character. A professional gamer who is “bad with women” queue depressing backstory of why he is unable to talk with women, the guy has no communication skills and looks completely annoyed by the MC but is somehow magically infatuated with her by the very end. Has little to no personality as he never initiates any conversations. It’s impossible to know anything about him because he legit never talks. He just stares at people like the MC sometimes otherwise he’s just looking at the floor. Like I said, the manga may be different but the anime failed miserably here. His only quirk is that he looks good, hey if you want to see hot guys I won’t hold it against you but that's all he's got going for him lmao. Side characters are trash. Their whole video game clan consists of MC, the love interest, a Guy posing as a girl who also has a sister complex, a chronically-online sister who sits on Discord all day talking to her online friends about how shit the real world is, then some old guy. There is also the girl who is brought in solely to create a love triangle who is somehow unironically better written than every other character. Oh I forgot one, the best friend of the MC who is a decent character.
Art/Animation: [7/10]: The drawing of the panels is pretty good. Some of the general effects used are also great. The animation was good enough. They did spend half of each episode having the MC and love interest stare at each other after all.
Soundtrack/Voice Acting: [5/10]: The opening and ending are average. I liked the soundtrack, it had these chill lofi beats and stuff. The voice acting wasn’t great. It didn’t seem passionate or genuine at all. The characters were lifeless enough already, and if I had to pick a word to describe the voice acting, it would be artificial. It lacked any genuineness and was either fake or lifeless.
This wasn’t a great adaptation of the manga, I’m sure the mangaka didn’t have this trash in mind within the adaptation. If lifeless anime like this are your thing, I won’t hold it against you. But if you are looking from a completely objective perspective, this anime is very weak compared to most romance anime, including one’s from this season like the dangers in my heart, skip and loafer, and insomniacs in the night. If you want an otaku gamer anime, there are far better options like romantic killer and wotakoi. I would be surprised to see a season two for this series, unfortunately. In a world of isekais and harems, it’s just too boring for studios to take a risk on, because even if the isekais and harems are absolute trash, there is still an larger audience for them in which they can make money. Final Score: 4/10

45/100A show that doesn't know what it wants to accomplish.Continue on AniListLoving Yamada at LV999! is a show that can best be described by the word bland.
It follows a college girl by the name of Akane, freshly dumped and in search of a way to make her ex feel jealous. This plot of hers fails spectacularly, but coincidentally she meets a pro gamer that just so happens to be attending the same gaming convention by the name of Yamada. She ends up telling him her woes and somehow by getting drunk, she ends up in his bed. However, he never intended to do anything with her. He's just a good guy who's decided to take care of a stranger in need. That's pretty much the summary of the first episode - a solid opening, full of potential. Unfortunately, the character's emotions are never fully explored and we get stuck with a bland story. For a show that's supposed to be a romantic comedy, it doesn't have many funny moments. In fact, it doesn't even have many romantic moments. So... what is it? Well, I'd describe it as a slice of life in which Akane decides to pursue a guy who showed her kindness and her path to getting the courage to come to terms with her insecurities and confess.... wait actually no, that's not what happened here.
Now I'll be entering SPOILER territory because It would be difficult to explain what's wrong with this show otherwise.
Instead of Akane confessing her feelings to him, he confesses first while she's drunk. Okay, so maybe the point was Yamada getting past his complete awkwardness and developing feelings for a woman for the first time in his life? The way I'm describing this sounds cute and very mature actually. Two people get past their insecurities and break into the unknown so that they could be together. But it just feels... weak. The show is paced very poorly and many of its episodes are wasted on characters that make no difference in the end and are not interesting in the slightest (looking at you Runa and Kamota). It would be interesting if that time was spent more on Yamada's relationship with the classmate that also likes him, but she was introduced very late, and because of that Yamada's rejection failed to trigger any emotional response from me. In fact, nothing triggered any emotional response from me here.
They didn't bond by doing much together, the game they were supposed to play together... well, they never actually play it together. It's mostly just Akane playing it with the rest of their little game guild. And their relationship develops mostly by Akane bothering Yamada every now and then and Yamada taking care of her when she's in a bit. The last episode flops so badly, there's no kiss, there's no romantic tension, there's no charming funny moments. They get together just ... like that. And that might in fact be pretty realistic, but it doesn't make for a entertaining watch.
This is a show with bland characters, and a very unimaginative basic story with no real heart put into it. At the end of the day, it is pretty harmless and inoffensive, its biggest fault being that it's simply boring. I'm unwilling to give it a lower score just because if you watch many episodes in a vacuum, they're not bad. But how it's all connected didn't reveal what the point of me watching this show was. I didn't have fun, I haven't felt emotion, and I didn't laugh. I just... consumed a very average show with little meaning.
