95/100"It's okay to fail. That's how you grow-one step at a time."Continue on AniListGreen Green Greens is Kento Terasaka's second sports series in Shonen Jump, after Beast Children.
It's also his second series in Weekly Shonen Jump to be canceled.
But sometimes, you fall, you get back up again, you keep trying to do better. Not everything can be perfect, but damn, Green Green Greens does its best to be.Green Green Greens follows Haku Yaesaki, a high schooler with no real direction in life. He's living a plain life, envious of others who are successful enough to make a living off of sports. One day, he meets Nadeshiko Oga, who's looking to become a pro golfer, and begins his journey into golf.
And man, what a journey it is.Green Green Greens is ostensibly a sports shonen that follows Yaesaki's journey to becoming a pro golfer, but it's really the story of Yaesaki finding passion in his life. Despite being cut short due to cancellation, Green Green Greens manages to showcase not just Yaesaki's journey into golf, but really how he grows and changes as a person, the lessons he learns along the way, and the passion people have for their hobbies. It's something that I wish more manga did, as I've only seen it done a few times, most notably The Drops of God. The result is that the characters become relatable, and that makes every emotional beat raw, visceral, and beautiful.
The MC, Yaesaki, is exactly what you want from a sports shonen mc. Fumbling at first, but enjoying the hell out of the sport. There's pure joy on his face every time something so small as a swing feels right, frustration at not doing well enough, a constant drive to improve. If you've ever worked hard at a sport, or a hobby, or anything similar, then you've probably felt the same way. He's brilliantly done, relatable as hell, and an awesome "everyman" character.
The series still manages to flesh out Oga, the series' secondary character/Yaesaki's inspiration to grow. The final stretch of the series has a focus on Oga and the challenges she faces as a semi-pro, which imo is an extremely clever way to show what Yaesaki would have been if the series wasn't canceled. Her (platonic) relationship with Yaesaki developing throughout the series is a highlight of the series as well.
And if that wasn't enough, we get another semi-mentor character named Oliver, who also has an interesting relationship with Yaesaki develop throughout the series, just because Terasaka has the talent to make this a coming of age story in full.
And then there's a few less notable characters, who are fine but not fleshed out.I've touched on this, but as a sports series there's just so much emotion packed into Green Green Greens. Yaesaki is the kind of character you can really root for, and when Terasaka wants to hammer a moment home, it's done perfectly. Even the art changes a bit for moments such as the impact of the first golf course, While Yaesaki is maturing, you're left feeling like he's still very much Yaesaki, because so much of his development is in his passion for golf that you really see him grow when he's golfing. The rest of the time, he's still the awkward kid trying to find who he is, and that's awesome.
Kento Terasaka has said that he really wanted to "convey the fun of golf." Not only did he succeed in conveying the fun, he's given us the frustration, the satisfaction, the regret. I feel like a broken record here, but man. It's an impressive level of quality. As usual, quick section on art- it's good. I think it's rough, but Yaesaki is a rough character, so it fits. There's some really cool shots to emphasize big moments, or individual swings, or character emotions, but it's also just really nice art overall.
Overall, Green Green Greens is just an incredible character journey wrapped up in a sports package. It's the kind of series that makes you feel like you can go for your dreams, and have fun doing them. It's now one of my favorite series of all time, and I cannot recommend it enough.
