90/100Megazone 23 - A very Stylishly 80's Mecha.Continue on AniListMegazone 23 follows Shogo Yahagi, an 18 year old Bōsōzoku (Japanese Biker). who steals a powerful motorcycle from the military. The motorcycle is called the "Bahamut" and has the capabilities to transform into a pilotable mech similar to a Valkyrie (Macross series). The film follow's Yahagi's adventure escaping the Police and the Military who are hunting down Yahagi, his friends, acquaintances, and love interest. Taking a wrong turn from a Police chase, Yahagi accidentally enters a restricted area where he learns something sinister about the world that is at the hands of the Military.
During the time of release, there was nothing quite like Megazone 23 in either Japan or the United States. With Megazone 23's visual aesthetics drawn by Mitsuki Nakamura (Gatchaman, Tekkaman, Mobile Suit Gundam, Space Runaway Ideon), 80's style pop/rock n' roll soundtrack composed by Shiro Sagisu (Bleach, Neon Genesis Evangelion, Shin Godzilla, Shin Ultraman, Nadia: Secret of Blue Water), and intense science fiction themes which were used as inspiration to The Matrix (1999) alongside World on a Wire (1973). Megazone 23 garnered attention and success from its mixture of concepts that had not been explored yet in film. However, its success was also due to the big names at the time working on the project being:
- Director: Noboru Ishiguro (Golden Bat, Super Dimension Fortress: Macross, Macross: Do You Remember Love?, Space Battleship Yamato II)
- Writer: Hiroyuki Hoshiyama (Arcadia of My Youth, City Hunter, Dirty Pair, GeGeGe No Kitaro, Patlabor: The Mobile Police, Turn A Gundam, Daitarn 3)
- Shuichi Onodera (Windaria, GoShogun, Space Warriors Baldios)
- Toru Miura (AD Police, Oh! My Goddess, Appleseed, Bubblegum Crisis, Date A Live, Haganai)
Looking back at Megazone 23 is like a beautiful time capsule of 80s science fiction in Japan. the film shows its age in some places, but to anime fans and especially mecha fans Megazone 23 is a timeless classic. I give a big thank you to the guys over at AnimEigo for officially releasing Megazone 23 in English (not as the cluster fuck that "Robotech: The Movie" was) on Blu Ray and Streaming.
