Portrait
55/100Why Teekyuu works and Usakame doesn'tContinue on AniList__Teekyuu __is unapologetically bat*hit insane. It doesn't matter if jokes don't land because you'll hear another one before even processing what happened. Nothing makes sense and it's not supposed to. If you can't find humour in it, you can find humour in the fact that __MAPPA __worked on the first three seasons, probably making it the last time their animators had good working conditions. __Usakame __drifts away from the __Teekyuu __formula by having double the runtime and double the seriousness. It has its charms, one being that the main characters were all voiced by members of the now disbanded idol group __Earth Star Dream.__ The mainstream Seiyuu in anime all do a great job, but it's a nice change of pace to have unique voices. The same can be said about some of the girls in __Teekyuu.__ The watered down / pastel style is also pleasing to the eye; it's refreshing and doesn't feel as corporate. Like __Teekyuu__, the OP is very catchy. One of the few I'll go back and listen to on my own time. The ED in the first episode was also a nice surprise. There's not a lot of competition in 'Insane Girls Doing Insane Things', but when you decide to tone things down to a CGDCT, you now have much more competition, and anime that have done better. __Usakame __gets stuck between the two and falls flat both ways. If I wanted to see a Tennis anime, I'd watch __Oregairu,__ or __Stars Align.__ If I wanted to see CGDCT, I'd watch __A Place Further Than the Universe,__ or __Azumanga Daioh.__ And If I wanted to see a surreal comedy with meta humour sprinkled in, I'd simply just watch __Teekyuu.__ Because __Teekyuu __is high octane, having the character animation flip between two dynamic poses most of the time works in its favour. For the more grounded __Usakame__, it just ends up looking unintentionally bad. The greatest moments in __Usakame __(outside of __Sogabe Eri's__ voice acting) are when the __Teekyuu __girls show up, but it shouldn't have to rely on that. I only watched __Usakame __because of its connections to __Teekyuu__, and I wouldn't watch it otherwise. Crossovers work best when both series have had equal time to develop. Even if __Usakame__ was structured exactly like __Teekyuu,__ I'd rather just have another season of __Teekyuu.__ The characters in this show can't land retorts and punchlines like their counterparts can. __Usakame __tries to get you to care about its characters and its world, but with only 12 short episodes that's not going to happen. __Teekyuu __works because it __doesn't care about anything.__ All in all, I wouldn't mind another season of Usakame if it keeps Millepensee away from Berserk.
