DESCRIPTION
The story centers on a young man named Yuu Haruna who has just switched schools. He's a bit shy, and he's constantly glued to his smartphone so he can check Twitter. He meets a girl named Fuuka Akitsuki, who doesn't even have a cell phone, is free-spirited, and naturally fascinates others. Yuu recently has been getting back in touch via Twitter with his childhood friend Koyuki Hinashi, who is now a popular singer. One day Yuu invites Fuuka to one of Koyuki's concerts, and there the three meet for the first time. The story follows the love triangle between a love that started through electronics, and a love that didn't start through electronics.

10/100A generically terrible romdrama that's so frighteningly unoriginal that it's shocking just how horrific it turned out.Continue on AniListThere's always that one romantic comedy or drama that comes along every once and a while, taking itself so seriously that it approaches the point of absurdity. Fuuka is one of the latter, and dear merciful Christ is it absurd. Fuuka is a story about love, music, and fucking both of those things up so hard that they don't even look like the same things on the other end. All of your favorite characters from all of fiction are present, like, MAIN CHARACTER and BLUE-HAIRED HEROINE. In a surprising turn of events, they end up going to a concert or some shit together after meeting on the roof (original idea do not steal), where they walk around a statue looking for each (on opposite sides) for FIVE. WHOLE. MINUTES. Because of this life changing experience of statue searching, blue-haired Fuuka decides she loves MC, who's name I couldn't care to remember if you threatened my life, and that she OWNS him and MUST have his love. Of course instead of telling him this, she acts all pouty and sad for 12 episodes instead.
Fuuka leads everyone on by coming up with this stupid idea to start a band and play cover songs, to which everyone agrees is an amazing idea for no reason. Fuuka can sing because plot convenience, and MC decides that he'll learn to play bass because he's cursed with crippling beta-itis. They then gather your typical group of magically musically competant high-schoolers, such as SPORTS McDRUMMERGUY, RICHY PIANO-PANTS, and CEVANT GUITAR-GIRL. Guitar-Girl is seemingly a mute until she notices that she talks to MC on Twitter. This unbreakable bond that could stretch across universes and destroy galaxies cures her of her mute and stoic attitude, and this facet of her character is never explored again. Because of Twitter.
Everyone's rose-colored dreams of starting a band a destroyed by MC's celebrity childhood friend, SHIRAYUKI'S VA. She's hopelessly in love with MC and became a successful solo artist by only writing songs about she loves MC for no reason other than being the doomed-to-lose childhood friend trope. This creates all sorts of wacky situations for the band, like going to the beach and being mad for no reason, getting stoned to death on stage because of a misunderstanding, and generally having severe bouts of anime-romance induced autism. Oh, and at the end of it all Fuuka runs away from everything to become a solo artist because it's impossible for the heroine to be forward with her feelings despite being an incredibly forward personality in all other facets of their character so we'll have two more episodes I guess.
In an incredibly ballsy move, the show actually puts SHIRAYUKI'S VA and MC in a relationship, which is satisfying for all of 3 minutes until you realize that even SHIRAYUKI'S VA is just a hollow husk of nothingness that you've projected the motivations and charm of another character on for no reason other than that they had the same voice actress. MC then continues to sulk about how his beautiful celebrity girlfriend, reasonably successful band, and overall perfect highschool existence just isn't fucking good enough for him. He ends up dumping celebrity girlfriend because he realizes that he loves Fuuka because of plot convenience and no real character motivations other than that "it was episode 12 and we needed a climax".
I wrote this before the last episode aired and I don't give a flying fuck how it ended. Fuuka is everything wrong with anime romance drama rolled up and decorated with a nice little bow. They should show this shit to directors as an example of what to NEVER DO. The entire experience feels like if someone really not-talented watched White Album 2 and said "Hey man I can do that I think". Thankfully they had someone with real talent draw a couple of the character designs because even though they're generic as all fuck at least they are sort of pretty to look at as the rest of the plot burns down in a blazing fire of autism.
Leave this show in the dumpster fire it belongs in.

40/100What could be an okay anime about starting a band is ruined by a horribly written love triangleContinue on AniListMINOR SPOILERS AHEAD To be honest, I regret rewatching Fuuka. There is this bitter feeling in my mouth I get from watching it. Rewatching it, I hated it more than it probably deserves to be. I almost dropped it, but I did not because I wanted to write a review for it on here. While you probably get the direction this review is going by what I have written so far, but I hope you stay for the rest, so I can explain why I feel the way I do about Fuuka.
There are a good deal of anime out there that rely on melodrama to advance their story. One example of that is an anime that I reviewed in the past, Gamers!. In that anime, it over-dramatizes many ~misunderstandings~ that annoyed many viewers at the time. That being said, the over-dramatization was often used for comedic effect, which is something I can not say about Fuuka. Fuuka takes itself very seriously--too seriously in my opinion. While Fuuka is not all bad, the part that will resonate the most with most people (at least most people like me anyway) is the worst and the cruelest part of the anime.
The central focus of Fuuka is on Yuu Haruna and the band he joins, The Fallen Moon. The Fallen Moon is formed after Fuuka Akitsuki, the girl the anime is named after, gets Yuu, Makoto Mikasa, Kazuya Nachi, and Sara Iwami to join. Yuu Haruna also reconnects with his childhood friend, Koyuki Hinashi, who has turned into a chart-topping idol in the time since they last met.
There are two cores to this anime: The Fallen Moon being one, and the other one being Yuu’s love triangle of Fuuka and Koyuki. The parts of the plot that revolve around the band are not that bad. They are not good either, feeling rushed at parts, but what can I say--at least it did not piss me off. I can not say the same about the plot that revolves around Yuu’s love triangle.
The problem with Yuu’s love triangle, and with Fuuka as a whole, is that you know who is going to ‘win’ it just by seeing whose name is in the title. I mean, I know that the girl who will ‘win’ is often obvious, but it is just cruel to Koyuki that she has to be in the show when it is obvious that she is going to be left heartbroken. In any just world, she and Yuu would live happily ever after-- but this is not a just world, this is Fuuka. Koyuki’s emotions are thrown around and tossed in the trash in favor of Fuuka. Again, I know that Fuuka is literally this anime’s title, but it is not fair to Kyouki to be used like this. As much as I like Koyuki, Fuuka would be better off if she (Koyuki) was not in it in the first place. The anime would still not be great, but it would not leave such a bitter taste in many viewers’ mouths. Having her be an important part of it causes unnecessary drama and subtracts from the other parts of Fuuka. A love triangle, at least in this form, is not needed.
With all of that aside, there are still other problems with Fuuka. The scenes that were supposed to be emotionally gripping were often hamfisted and end up whiffing. Fuuka also for some reason has everyone bend to her will no matter what. I know she is an enigma and forceful, but it seems that the only reason why anyone listens to her is that she is the one who has her name in the title. The whole ‘love triangle’ debacle is so bad that it seeps into other parts of Fuuka, making you more critical of everything else.
Sorry if this sounded like a rant more than a review, it is just that there are little anime that leave me feeling sour like this. Good anime often leave you with a hole in your heart, wanting more--Fuuka will leave you wondering why you finished it in the first place (if you did not drop it that is). I would not recommend anyone watch this. I feel like a part of my body was sucked away. I feel like I was rejected, not Koyuki. If you want an anime with a similar plot and does a love triangle better, I would recommend White Album.

79/100If you love musical anime, then this is a decent pick.Continue on AniListI see there is mixed opinions about Fuuka. One side says it is great, and the other side says this is awful, I want to erase what I've watched. So I wanted to write my first review so I can tell you all the positives, and the negatives about Fuuka. If you are looking for great characters in this anime, I'd suggest to look for another anime. The characters are pretty generic, dense MC, hot guy character, hot headed character, high school characters you know the drill. Although, that is necessarily not a bad thing. Akitsuki Fuuka, you might like her, or you could find her annoying. Me, however, she isn't all that bad. I think she is one of the only characters that keeps me interested in the show. She is needed in the show so she can bring out the best in the show, and bring out the best out of the characters. Overall, I think she is the best character in this anime, no question. My least favorite is Sara. It's because she gets a little bit of scenes, she had potiental at first when she met Yuu, but later on, turned into a very bland character. She had much so potiental... but just wasted for looking like a support character, rather than a main one. If you are looking for Art, I'd say it's a decent pick. It's not outstanding, but it can very look pretty. It's the usual slice of life imagery, the school, the city, etc. But it's done in a pretty good way, although not really original, but that is no problem at all. If you are looking for an anime with good music, this is it. It's easily the best part of the anime. Catchy songs that will make your head bop. Especially if you are a rock fan. It is definitely replayable, and easily what sells the anime for me. If you are looking for an anime with a great story... well... it's not too bad. I've just seen romance anime that could do this better... like White Album 2. Although it is much sadder than Fuuka ever was. If you want a better ending than White Album 2, then this is the anime for you. Well I'll the summarize the story of Fuuka without spoiling it, a romance anime that has a love triangle, one is a popular singer and an inspiring singer with her own band. A lot of drama throughout the story, and if you don't like drama, this is ain't it for you, but it isn't that sad personally, so if you hate crying, I believe you should be fine. Not much I can say about the story overall, I think it's ok or decent. Nothing special for me personally. Overall, the sound of the anime is the selling point of the anime, and if you love musical anime, you should watch it for that. Overall, a 7.9 out of 10. I know, very specific, but I feel like that's the perfect score for this anime. Nothing more and nothing less. I hope this review gave you some idea whether or not to watch this show. <3
