86/100A dark, depressing short I found oddly engrossing. [Minor Spoilers]Continue on AniListJiro Matsumoto really loves nudity, sex and violence. The former two especially permeate through this manga, it's certainly not for the faint of heart, yet it all serves a purpose. The author uses this adult, dark content to tell a melancholic tragedy about three people with dreams. Something dark and dreary, with few moments of happiness. Possibly one of the worst things to read if you're already in a bad mood.
They all dream of a better future, but the town they're stuck in due to the ongoing war forces them back to reality in a way I found very involving. Matsumoto does an excellent job giving each character a colourful personality despite the manga's short length. Each of the three mains is distinct and serve a clear purpose in the story. The story touches upon some very delicate themes. Innocent and losing it, how delicate and fragile dreams and motivation can be and how easy it is for people to lose what they value.
The setting itself is interesting and very reminiscent of Matsumoto's other work, Freesia. In that manga he used the idea of a constant war to allow the government to approve odd programs, whilst here a war is used to block and restrict a town's actions. There's a nice mixture of depravity and crime that suit the story in general, and cases of people finding their own happiness even if that's just from overindulgence in food or sex.
The art is pretty normal overall, nothing too special though the setting does have good amount of personality, Matsumoto does a great job conveying the atmosphere through art and he's definitely had practice with the violence and nudity side of things, but he's far from one of the best manga artists, some of the character designs leave a bit to be desired and are overly reminiscent of his previous works, though the odd detailed panel is appreciated.
The pacing and writing for the manga is solid throughout. Everything moves along nicely and only dwells on the important things. Those that enjoy a gritty, down-to-earth story about dreamers trying to pursue a future will definitely find something to love about this manga. It's an excellent way to spend a couple of hours and those that have enjoyed anything else by this author certainly wont be disappointed.
