DESCRIPTION
Momoko is the only child of the Kuzuryuu clan, a powerful martial arts family with inhuman strength. But strong as she is, her father fears a woman will never be able to master the skills of the family. Unless Momoko marries and bears a capable heir, the Kuzuryuu line is doomed to weaken and die off! With this mission in mind, Momoko is sent to the rival Inuzuka clan, where she is to marry the son of their mighty leader. But Koushi Inuzuka abandoned the martial arts long ago. Now committed to his legal studies, the last thing Koushi has on his mind is marriage — especially not to the world’s strongest bride!

60/100An alright series that shows the benefits of keeping things simple.Continue on AniListHi, you may remember me from the time I wrote a review about how I didn’t like a manga a lot of people seem to quite like. Anyways, I read a manga from the same author, and it was somehow a lot better despite the fact that Ohtaka was definitely far less experienced when writing it. I am not sorry for how much Magi will come up.
Sumomomo Momomo is a perfect example of the benefits of knowing what your series is and not trying to punch above that. This series is largely free from many of the issues found in Ohtaka’s follow-up series Magi, although it isn’t without faults. The main point in Momomo’s favor is its far smaller scale than what Magi eventually became. I can safely say Momomo is about the world of martial arts intruding into the life of one Koushi Inuzuka for the entirety of the run, and the story never strays from this basic idea, even as events intensify. In addition, it also gets far better as it goes along, whereas Magi just kept getting worse and worse. Another positive quality of this manga for me was a good portion of the cast. Koushi is a fun asshole-ish protagonist who you still want to see succeed, and the hyperactive Momoko was really cute and had quite a bit of jokes that landed for me. This also carries over to the many antagonists, and how damn good of a job this manga does at making you want to see them get beaten to a pulp, I can always appreciate that.
However, some of the content hasn’t exactly aged well, particularly some elements of Shintarou Inoue’s character I could definitely see some readers taking offense to, and some of the more fanservicey stuff with Sanae (another character I quite liked). In addition, some of the fight composition can be sloppy at times, likely due to inexperience, one of the main times I noticed this was during the final battle as the fight really ramped up. But this problem doesn’t necessarily go away even as Ohtaka’s artwork improves stylistically. Likewise, the problem Magi had with several designs looking almost the exact same is kind of foreshadowed here with a few of the main characters, namely Tenka and Hanzo depending on how they're drawn at times.
Considering I absolutely hated another series by this author, I'm surprised I even decided to read something else she wrote, but I ended up having a fun time with it, so I'm glad I did. I'd overall say this series is nothing more than pretty alright, but given it's rather short length of 12 volumes, I'd say giving it a read couldn't hurt. It's definitely more worth it than Ohtaka's follow-up series that's for sure.
