90/100Who knew a story about robots could make me feel so many emotions?Continue on AniListKarakuri Odette is the story of an advanced robot who takes the form of a teenage girl. There's nothing that she wants more than to live the human experience. The story starts when she convinces her creator, who serves as her father figure, to allow her to enter high school.
Karakuri Odette is all about the human experience. Odette learns about what it means to be a human, as well as all the emotions we experience from sadness to romantic love. She also has to come to face with these questions: "How close can she come to being human?" and "Does she have a heart, and can she love in the same way as her human friends?"
Odette is our lead. She's a very curious robot, deeply in love with the world of humans. She's particularly interested in what it's like to be a girl, and, as a result, she has a strong love for the traditionally feminine. Odette wants to become a human, and she must come to terms with the fact that she's still a robot and that being a robot isn't bad. She's very naive and full of childlike wonder, and she always strives to learn more, even though she can be insensitive.
Asao Kurose is probably one of our most prominent human characters. He's a juvenile delinquent, always picking fights. However, he becomes very close to Odette, and while he initially views her as a robot, he quickly grows to view her as a girl with thoughts, feelings, and emotions. He too wants to be viewed as something other than what he is on the surface, as shown by his feelings for Odette's friend who was the first person to help him despite his reputation.
The third main character is Chris. He's a less advanced android, and as a result, he has a harder time with emotions and illogical behaviors and ideas. He's very innocent and does what he's told. He was created with a sinister purpose in mind, but he is able to grow to care about people, starting with Odette. He wants to be able to understand complex things, even though he currently isn't able to.
The later half of the series introduces more characters who also have a strong presence and character growth: Shirayuki: a sheltered and isolated girl, Travis: a very human seeming android, and Grace: a less advanced android who has never been treated like she has value.
I'll also give a strong shout out to Professor Yoshizawa, who is a lovely person. He shows compassion to all beings, robot or human. He treats Odette and Chris, and to an extent Grace like his own children. He's just a nice dad.
It's such a character driven series, and I think the characters and the emotions presented really stand out and make the series. I was surprised since it was about robots, but after finishing it, I realized I was moved.
As for the art, I wasn't a huge fan of it. but I didn't have any serious gripes. (I have really high standards when it comes to pretty art. XD) I think this is some of Julietta Suzuki's earlier work, so it makes since it would be less refined. I've seen some of the art for her later and most iconic series, Kamisama Kiss, and there is a definite improvement.
I only have one gripe worth, and that was just some random sexism. Fortunately the sexism was relegated to a side gag (the thing was Odette couldn't be a super hero, but Chris could cause he's a boy and Odette's a girl.) I just feel like I should mention it, cause even though it's a small thing it could still affect people. :)
I did really enjoy Karakuri Odette. It was such a wonderful, emotional take on robots and the human condition. If you want a sci-fi series that makes you feel something and isn't all action, I recommend Karakuri Odette.
