80/100A beautifully executed film that brings in some new things to the table, like a mind-blowing final battle!Continue on AniListDon't get me wrong here.
The second Gurren Lagann movie recaps episodes 17 to 27 of the original series and includes some new stuff as well. As I said in my review of the first movie, I wasn't a big fan of that. It felt rushed and I disliked the divergence from the original series.
However, in this movie, the divergence was handled much better with an epic and mouth dropping final 10 minutes which was 100x better than the original ending. This movie succeeded in trying to do its own thing. Like the first movie, it also succeeded at throwing new information like f.ex Nia writing a letter to the deceased Kamina, Simon figuring out that she will die and Nia being much more of a badass!
Nia in this film got her own mech and she becomes way cooler and much less of a damsel in distress which she was a bit in the OG series. But just a bit, she was still a fantastic character in that as well.
But that wasn't the case with the other characters. Simon, Yoko, Kittan and Rossiu had the exact same things happen to them as it happened in the series, which I felt they could've given us more information about these characters. I would've really liked to know more about Simon and Kamina's deceased parents, which they had given us no information about. I would also really like to have known more about that first scene in the OG series, which I speculate is Kamina's father and Boota in the first war before the anti-spirals took over. However, I think a prequel would be great because it would explain Kamina's father, Lordgenome and the anti-spirals. Which we only got 10 minutes in the first film. Furthermore, another issue that I had in this movie is that like the first one, It feels way too compressed. Gainax could've made these two movies a bit lengthier.
To conclude, this movie was great all around but could've elaborated on some more things e.g anti-spirals, most of the main cast, Lordgenome, Kamina & Simons parents, etc. But, I highly recommend you watch this, mostly for the new stuff that's added and for the final battle, which was all around glorious. Still, though, it's not as fantastic as the real thing and you have to watch the series before these movies! It was still a tearjerker, especially that wedding :(

80/100This was MADE for theaters.Continue on AniListGurren Lagann's The Lights in the Sky are Stars finale movie is as bombastic, explosive, exhilarating, colorful, and unforgettable a trip as you could hope to imagine. And you thought the show took things to the extreme? Oh honey....
This movie, like Childhood's End, condenses the show, but does still veer away from the original in some places: Kittan still dies, though a lot of the other secondary characters that got killed off in the show like the twins, do actually stick around for the big epic showdown, Yoko's teacher arc is only quickly mentioned, Rossiu doesn't try to unalive himself at his old cave home, a lot of the epilogue is cut, EVERYONE gets their own mechas, and Simon delivers the goods in quite possibly the most fucking badass final beatdown against the AntiSpiral you could ever imagine in an ending such as this.
Ultimately, if I reeeaalllyy had to choose-I'd say the series was better. More time, better paced, and all of that helped make the ending wedding and epilogue scenes hit so satisfyingly to me. But this movie is still MORE than worth your time for the simple fact that the final battle is amped up beyond belief. It's. A. Damn. Rush. With all the time, resources, and willpower they had-Gainax and Production I.G. deliver quite possibly some of the definitive greatest animation in anime I have ever seen. Hell, it's at times mind-boggling to think humans are capable of making something as inspiring and kinetic as this finale. Once again, it's another "How the actual hell did they DO THAT?" moment cementing animation as a medium to be reckoned with. The passion, commitment, and imagination all comes together to create something that deserves to go down in history as an artistic achievement. Hot......DAMN.
And I gotta say, they somehow made Nia even more of an overwhelming cinnamon roll. Like Jesus Christ, I get butterflies in my stomach whenever she shows up onscreen.
After spending a week following these characters' journeys, seeing the story unfold, and being inspired in a way very few shows have-I can't help but gush over how much of a Godsend Tengen Toppa Gurren Lagann is as the perfect mecha anime. You keep upping yourself time and time again-constantly getting back up and learning more about yourself in the process. You push yourself beyond space and time, never even thinking about stopping, where any and all setbacks are just inconveniences, and you finally get to that sacred point where you peak. Your journey is complete, and you finally feel as fully realized of yourself as ever before. And even then...don't lose yourself to it all either. You're not God, and that's more than OK. You finally reach the point where you can move on and hold back sensibly. For all your extreme effort, diligence, and excellence: there's nothing wrong with at least a little contentment and peace. I think Simon says it best himself in the final episode: "We're not that stupid." (Or something along those lines but you get the idea).
Tengen Toppa Gurren Lagann: I salute you. Farewell Simon, Nia, Boota, Yoko, Kamina, Viral, Leeron, Rossiu, the Blacks, twins, everyone. Thanks anime, thanks art, thanks robots, and thank you. See you up across space and time. Peace.
"You're at your best when the going gets rough. You've been put to the test, but it's never enough. You've got the touch. You've got the power." -a wise man from the 80s.

89/100The last half hour of the movie is peak cinema, and peak anime. A must watch on the biggest screen you can find.Continue on AniListOnce again, I am making a review after seeing the 15th anniversary showing of the movie in theaters, and this time, in 4D. I'll try to keep the thoughts on that short, since they probably won't show it again in 4D, unfortunately. But long story short, if you can, absolutely see this one in 4D, but seeing Childhood's End in 4D is take or leave. It really helps build the ramp-up of the series if you watch the second movie in 4D, but not the first, I think.
Anyway, since the first movie did so well and the new scenes were very well received (shocking, I know), there were many more scenes added to the movie recap of the second half of the anime. Once again, there's some stuff that's completely skipped over, like Yoko as a teacher helping her students which had the amazing shot of them sitting in the tree, but some stuff that was skipped over, was remade into a different scene, like with Rossiu about to kill himself, now taking place on the Arc-Gurren, instead of Adai village. There's a general difference in impact but the scene ends with the same effect it needed.
The movie even changes the fates of some characters, since some of the more... lesser known Team Dai-Gurren members survive and then have their own Tengen Toppa forms to fight the Anti-Spiral with. That scene, and the entire fight with the anti-spiral, being one of the most insane scenes in anime and cinema that I've ever seen. As a fan of the series, seeing that after seeing the anime first, it's very cathartic. Seeing it in 4D was even better, with the seats shaking and puffs of air and whatnot making it even more hype. There's just something about a fight so ridiculous happening devolve down to dudes just punching each other in the face. In the pre-movie interview with the staff, even they said, "We couldn't make something like this today." And I believe it. Something like this couldn't have the same sort of intense, child-like excitement of seeing two mechs combine to form a bigger and bigger mech, all done with some of the best animation and music in the industry, being hungry for more the next week, anticipating what could possibly happen next, with a group of people just as passionate as you, sharing your theories or memes online before the next episode came out to blow your (theoretical or literal) balls off, or cry your eyes out. Speaking of music, there were about three tracks made exclusively for this movie, and all of them are phenomenal, especially... (inhales) ..."My XXX is the Best in the Universe." That title alone is pure adrenaline.
My thoughts are essentially the same as the first movie, but its definitely more of a spectacle here. Watch the anime, then see the movies when you get the chance, hopefully once the release the 4K cuts online somehow, so you can see the excellent job of the dub to keep the continuity. The movie was clearly made for theater viewing, so seeing it on such a massive screen in of itself was the perfect, if not definitive, way of seeing the movie. REDLINE you watch as loud as possible, TTGL you see on the biggest screen possible.
