70/100Wait, That's Not Lilo!Continue on AniList(Originally Reviewed on Serializd)
It has been quite a bit now since I last covered anything from the Lilo & Stitch franchise, with me having watched all of the movies and the TV show that was released over in the west, and giving them all the full time and attention that they deserve. However, now that it has been so long since I covered all of those, I figured it was about time I started covering the..... other stuff this franchise has. The entries that a lot of people most likely don't know about. Much like most of American for the past however many years, I had no clue about the Stitch anime being a thing for the longest time, which is weird, considering the first season did air over here on Disney XD, so how I ended up missing it is beyond me. Either way, whenever I did eventually find out about it, I didn't even know what to make of it, but I did end up watching it and the rest of the seasons anyway, and I ended up enjoying it enough for what it was. Fast forward a couple of years, and now I am watching this show again, and for the first season of this show, it is still pretty decent. It isn't exactly the best thing you could watch from this franchise, and it does have some issues that hold it back from being anything too special, but it was still a good time overall, and it does capture a lot of the same spirit and energy that this franchise has always had from the beginning, which is great to see.
The stories are about what you would expect, not only relying on plots that you typically find in your generic cartoon shows that have been made over the years, but even also incorporating ones that have already been done in this franchise before, which does kinda suck, but at the same time, I wouldn't say any of these episodes are terrible or even really bad, and they can be fun enough for those that are fans of these characters, which speaking of, the characters are good, with Stitch, Jumba, Pleakly and the others acting pretty much exactly like they used to and being fun to watch still, and as for the new batch that we have here, while they aren't quite as memorable or lovable as the ones from the main Lilo & Stitch franchise, they manage to still have plenty of fun moments and are generally decent overall, the voice acting is good, with none of the original VAs returning for the returning characters at all, but the ones they have gotten to replace them do a great job at replicating the originals' work, and the ones for all of the other characters are pretty good too, even if they can all have an annoying habit I will get into later, the animation is good, being pretty typical for what you would find from an anime like this, but at least it is nice to look at, and there aren't really any errors to be found here, and it does still have plenty of the jokes and heartwarming moments you would expect from this series, even if both of those things don't hit quite as hard as it had done before.
As a whole, this first season is sort of just here to exist as its own thing, having plenty of different kinds of adventures you would expect from a show like this and not doing too much to innovate on what had come before it, but at the same time, that's not really a bad thing. Lilo & Stitch was always a pretty chill series despite how emotional and crazy it can get, and this show manages to capture that vibe very well all throughout, although that probably may not be enough for those wanting to see more out of this series. A lot of the plots here are ones that you, again, not only have seen many times before in many other shows, but it also even incorporates past elements and plots from the previous show, such as with some of Jumba's experiments returning to cause more havoc, and from what I remember, it definitely doesn't get much better from here when it comes to that. Thankfully though, these stories still manage to be decent enough regardless, so it isn't too big of a deal. What is a big deal though is with the voice acting, or rather, how LOUD it can get. There are a lot of moments where a lot of characters can be YELLING their lines, sometimes with multiple people at once doing the yelling, and while it is mostly tolerable, sometimes it can REALLY get on my nerves. Just be sure to be prepared for that if you do end up watching it for yourself.
Overall, despite the generic plotlines and some moments of annoying voice acting, Season 1 of Stitch is still a pretty decent start, giving us plenty of time to learn about this new setting, these new characters, and plenty of the weird stuff that goes on around there, while also giving us plenty of what we loved about the previous entries in this franchise, even if it doesn't try to do much to make it much more grand or exciting then what came before it. I would recommend it for those who loved previous Lilo & Stitch entries, as well as those who like simple shows like this in general, because while it may come off as weird for those familiar with these characters (to the point where you could even be mad at what the show is), but it is harmless as a whole, and I'm sure you can have enough fun with it in plenty of areas. Let's just hope that they end up doing something different when it comes to Season 2, otherwise this whole repeating of Stitch's journey is gonna get pretty annoying pretty fast. But hey, I'm sure it will have a decent conclusion at the end, right?........................ please?
