95/100The Hidden Gem Amongst Sports Mangas, And Might Change Your Perspective on GolfContinue on AniListTension, Hype, Sudden Twists and awesomeness. These are just some words I think help give an idea of just what King golf is. Many readers get the wrong idea when they hear King Golf. ‘’Golf is so boring and bad’’ ‘’I will just sleep reading this manga’’ are just some things I have heard people say when I recommend this manga. While yes, Golf might be boring and annoying to some people, this manga is the whole opposite from what you’re saying. However, I cannot keep talking in this kind of format to keep you hooked on the series. I will have this review divided into 3 different sections: Plot, Characters and art and by the end of all the sections, I will give a rating.
PLOT
The story of King Golf follows a high schooler called Sousuke Youki. Youki goes to Teirin High school, where you are either with a gang or you’re an Elite sports player, Youki is a gang member. One morning when Youki was finishing up a fight, Kazumi, a prodigy golf player, looked at Youki, and with disappointment he walked away, completely ignoring Youki. Youki, who is filled with rage, going out of his way to take revenge on Kazumi by looking down on him, made Youki enter the school’s Golf Club, filled with over the top Golf players and a thuggish golf coach. Youki makes up a goal to become the King of Golf, but what does it take to become king of golf, and what challenges on the way does Youki have to face? What I like about this plot is Sousuke Youki. With him being a gang member from the beginning, he took a massive twist and became a golf player, and on top of that he wants to become the best, which is not what you see in a lot of sports manga. During the manga you see Youki struggling a lot, but also the motivation, and energy he has to keep going, just to take revenge on a small look. Overall, I think this plot is very unique from any other sports manga and it works as a Shounen
Plot is 9/10, interesting and works
CHARACTERS,
King Golf has a lot of different characters. All ranging from different personalities, helping to give the series more life.
From tired, sluggish personality, to spoiled attitude characters, King Golf has almost everything to offer with characters. First I want to talk about the supporting characters. Youki before entering the golf club had a buddy called matsu maru who helps Youki during his career as a golfer. From training to cheering, he does everything to help Youki get revenge on Kazumi. On the talk of Kazumi, let’s talk about the character who’s the most important of them all. Kazumi is a laid back, pro Golfer, who can do almost anything and is involved in a lot of pro Golf tournaments, he’s a very good rival character, very well done. We also have lots of minor supporting characters. They don’t mean as much, however they each have time to shine. Overall I think the series gets much more life with each of the characters personality, both supporting characters and antagonists.
One more thing to add is that whenever Youki is training, we get shown that the others have been training too, it’s a good and nice touch to say basically, even when the main character is somewhere else, the world is alive.Overall I would give the characters 10/10, really like them.
ART,
oh dear, where do I start. The art in King Golf is just phenomenal. Even the smaller panels are so good. I wouldn’t say the art is Kentaro Miura or Yusuke Murata level, however the art is one of the high points of the series. There are a lot of full page spreads and double page spreads which is just a treat to the eye. You’ll never get tired of the art throughout the series, it’s just amazing. Each individual character are so nicely drawn, the nature and forests are very well done and just everything is drawn very good and nicely. While yes a lot of sports manga have good art, this series is no exception, it also has very good art. Throughout the series you can see how much every character have changed, along with the art style changing.Art overall is 10/10, nothing more I could have asked for
Now then, I don’t really have anything more to talk about that I think is positive, so let me talk about the con’s
CON’S,
Youki’s attitude. This might sound controversial to say, just after saying how he’s a good character, but let me explain. Youki as said was previously a gang member, for him to join the gold club might take a while for him to change attitude, if he’s even willing to change it. Youki is good, but can sometimes be annoying to some extent, he’s not a douche all of the time however there are some times where he just switches attitude, which some people might not mind. Like said, nothing to big but I think it can sometimes be.. Weird I guessKazumi as a character. I know, these hot takes are becoming a bit too weird. Kazumi like I have said, is just such a good character as a rival. What I dislike about Kazumi is that he’s a bit too laid back and doesn't have enough care about Youki. Otherwise he’s a very well done and good character.
Last words and final rating about the series,
Like said with everything else that I have said, this series is just absolutely phenomenal. I’m just so surprised this isn’t more popular, since I don’t see enough people talking about this. Just because it’s about golf, doesn’t mean it’s trash. I myself am not that into Golf, heck this was probably one of the first media about Golf I consumed, and what can I say, I don’t regret it. The tension in the battles, the precision everyone has to have to win, the hyped up moments that got me off my seat, this can’t even be compared to real life Golf, I enjoyed this just way too much, both as for being a series and something about being Golf. Try this out, and see if this changes your perspective about Golf.
