70/100A heartfelt story of a young boy who delivers lettersContinue on AniListTegami Bachi, is the story of a 12 year old boy Lag Seeing, and his journey to become a Letter Bee.
Letter Bees are basically postmen of Amberground, employed by the national government. Lag’s journey to become a Letter Bee begins when his mother got abducted by the capital officials, therefore he was sent as a package to his nearest relative. He got picked up by Gauche Suede, a top Letter Bee whom inspired him to become one as well. Later, it turned out that Gauche Suede has been missing for years, and it became Lag’s goal to search for him. The premise is certainly different enough to catch one’s attention. This is after all, a story about letters.
The majority of this show is centered towards Lag Seeing growth, one letter delivery at a time. Meeting new people, funny moments coupled with emotional ones, but with dark undertones that everything is still a mystery waiting to be revealed. This is the first time I liked a crybaby character this much. Tegami Bachi is certainly a pleasant surprise, since I thought it was just another mediocre shounen show. What I got is certainly one of the better written shows I have encountered in a while.
Empathy.
The way this anime was written is filled with empathy, and is certainly good at expressing this to the viewers. The MC cries
allmost of the time, because he also feels the emotions of the people he interacts with on his journey. I find it suitable to say that this show's theme is "Heart": the letters are people's hearts, the monsters called Gaichuu eats people' hearts, their weapons shoot people's fragments of hearts, and most of all, Lag Seeing has the heart to feel the people he encounters through his journey. I must admit I cried at almost every episode. The animation in this anime is pretty average, save for the time when they CG the monsters called Gaichuu, then it’s just hilariously horrible. The art is notable as it doesn’t look like your average shonen show. The color palette in this anime mostly consists of violet, which I think is pretty appropriate for a fantasy land where the sun never shines.
Speaking of setting, the audience are shown that this place, called Amberground is shrouded by mystery. People are essentially segregated by economic class: Akatsuki, the rich and flourishing capital underneath the artificial sun; Yuusari, the area of middle-class people; and lastly, Yodaka, which lies in the outskirts far from the sun and where people are basically living in extreme poverty, a place where Lag comes from. Travel between areas is prohibited and heavily guarded by the government, except for chosen people including the Letter Bees.
Lots of mysteries surrounding the show are waiting to be uncovered, and it looks like that Lag is caught up in the middle of it without knowing. There seems to be something in Lag’s past that happened which may be connected to the kidnapping of his mother. And why does this kid from the outskirts of the dark lands, have a spirit amber as an eye….
Conclusion
This season ended in a cliff hanger, and you’ll see me watching the second season. Watch this if you want a shonen show that has an actual well-written story and characters. It probably looks childish, but this show has enough dark undertones to keep your attention. Don’t watch this if you don’t like main characters that cry a lot, because you have been warned, Lag Seeing cries a lot.Shellshock
50/100Pretty Middling tbh. Nothing really that stood out.Continue on AniListTegami Bachi Season 1 Review:
The Series is set in steampunk world where the Chads are Mailmans. In this world they are called Letter Bee, or Tegami Bachi. They go around delivering Letters which carry people's hearts. Each Letter Bee has 2 main components. Their Gun which is capable of shooting there metaphorical heart and there Dingo which is like a sidekick. The story follows our main character who wants to find his hero who saved 7 years before we begin our story. So alongside his trusty Dingo who is an underage girl who refuses to wear underwear because this is Japan and we have no choice in the matter.
So When I say I found the series Middling I did lie a little bit. The setting of this series is very interesting. The desert is unironically kind of peaceful too look at. Until the Gaichu show up. Which are basically sand monsters. But Victorian style buildings and locations. As well as the outfits really add an immersion to the series you don't really see. If you guys think I'm praising something small and trying to make it much bigger than I should. That's because I am. Nonetheless good setting.
Now the action is pretty hit or miss. Mostly due to how it was handled. The action is a one hit finisher type thing. Where the Letter Bee's charge up there attack to hit the single weak point of the Gaichu. Some are fun, most are ok, some are shit. Its not really anything tbh. The Dingo here is meant to be capable of revealing the Gaichu's weak point so the Letter Bee's can attack. This is basically all of the fight scenes in the series.
Now the main character is... quite annoying. His hero that helped him 7 years ago was more charismatic then him. The main reason for that is because this guy cries so fucking much. Every Episode its the same shit. He just crying over and over and over again. Now I get it, he's 12, he's not supposed to be strong or whatever. But realism doesn't mean its enjoyable. If i wanted to watch a bunch of kids whine like little shits I'd go to the park or look in the mirror or hang around r/anime.
I actually quite like the Dingo character. She is honestly adorable however. The, I'm not wearing underwear joke, was funny the first time. But Not subsequently.... I do hope this isn't a major problem continuing the series.
Really the only episode that actually felt fresh was the last episode. Where not only the story moved forward but we got to see something different or something unique. I didn't hate the previous episodes either. But they just felt mundane. I don't mean to use the word boring but maybe redundant would be better.
The series also has quite some filler. Do Note you don't have to watch the OVA that came before the series. As a remake of that OVA is made into Episode 17. So don't make the same mistake I did. The filler episodes themselves were actually fine. They kept in tone with the theme, the main characters. In the end the fillers weren't the problem. I honestly wouldn't be able to discern the quality of the filler episodes from the canon episodes.
As far as Season 1 goes. I'm disappointed. Not angry, just disappointed. Considering how the series ended though I am interested in watching Season 2. I was told that it actually shifts from the manga entirely so lets see how the anime handles the ending.
Overall. 5/10. Its fine. No strong opinions on this one so far.
