95/100A Must-Read Masterpiece for anyone who loves complex and mysterious stories with a ton of WTF momentsContinue on AniListKubera is one of the best fictional stories out there. It's underrated since it's nowhere near as popular as the likes of Tower of God, Noblesse and other mainstream webtoons. It's so good that it made me write a review for it, which I don't generally do.
Art: (8/10)
The one weak aspect of Kubera which I am sure everyone would agree on is Art, at least the 1st season. Many might consider dropping Kubera for its art, but trust me it gets much better after the first season. I read somewhere that Currygom (Author) hired a few assistants to help her with it after the initial season, and it has been pretty effective.Plot:(10/10)
This has to be one of the most complex and intriguing story I have ever read. The grandness of One Piece mixed with the Mind blowing reveals and Plot Twists of AoT plus a dose of steroids gives you Kubera. It starts off slow and continues to be till the 1st season, but the payoff is just amazing in the later seasons. Actions and Events which some might skim through in the 1st season has effects in the later seasons. It doesn't have mindless fights and is mostly a story driven plot. It includes almost all the tags which you might look for in a story, Action, Adventure, Fantasy, Gods, Time Travel, Mystery, you name it. Currygom has woven together a beautiful and mind-boggling story with some incredible foreshadowing and time travel aspects. As of writing this review, the webtoon hasn't ended yet. I am looking forward to seeing what other shocks Currygom would give me and how the story would end.Characters:(10/10)
Another category where Kubera excels in. Kubera has wide cast and many protagonist and antagonists, tho it's not black and white. Every character has some backstory and Kubera goes deep into it. You have characters who start of as good tho fishy and betray the main protagonist, you have characters who start of as merciless killers but become good, and you will feel sorry for even the most detestable characters. The Main Protoganist Kubera Leez Ananta is similar to Bam from Tower of God in some aspects. They both have mysterious pasts and mysterious powers. The story often explores the world from the perspective of other characters, and not just the Main Protagonist. The characters can be divided into 3 different races, Gods, Suras and Humans (Including Quarters, Halfs and Ancient Humans). The Gods and Suras are based off Hindu Mythology.Final Thoughts:
Read It. Just Read It. Seriously, If you are a fan of Grand and Mysterious Stories, this is a must-read. You might have the urge to drop it at the beginning due to its slow start and bad art, but just stick to it for its massive payoff.burningluffy
95/100A masterpiece in the MakingContinue on AniListWarning this review contains spoilers. I will mark them but I honestly just reccomend reading for yourself so you can enjoy kubera blind. Take my word for it that it is peak.
Now, Kubera is a series that has been on my list for a very long time. This like the 4th or 5th time I tried it and luckily I didn't drop it this time! The only reason I know about this series was because a friend reccomended it to me, and that's pretty much it. No one else knew about it it seemed, and it was pretty lowkey. I hated it the first times I tried it. I think this was mainly because I was very selective with my stories, and it wasn't until I left the manga medium for a while in favor of other mediums, that I truly came to understand Kubera and what made it brilliant. I can safely say now that this series is severely underrated, it is the best manhwa I've ever read and it's not even close. Now that's enough of an intro to what got me into it, let's get started with the actual review. Kubera to begin with is a story about a girl that loses everything to a sura, including her village, family, and everyone she ever knew. Eventually she meets a magician called asha, and that is where the story truly begins. I'm not gonna go super in depth with what it is about beyond that, but I will talk about what I like. Essentially in Kubera, there are usually small arcs, and eventually these small arcs set up the bigger arcs. Now these small arcs are very important despite their size. It gives loads of development to characters, shocking truths are often revealed. Every big arc has this big similarity that pretty much amounts to sura's attempting to obliterate a village However, each of these arcs are very unique, it is pretty much the pay off from all the already great smaller arcs, and everything fits into place. I think one of the biggest things to like about kubera is not only its character's but it's crazy foreshadowing. No manga I've read(or manhwa) has ever been on the same level as Kubera's foreshadowing. It is simply masterclass. You will be heavily rewarded for every minor detail you pick up on because eventually it will have a greater importance in the end. There are even minor details from part 1 that actually fit into part 3, so make sure to pay attention while reading if you want to have an even greater experience with the read. Each of the character's in Kubera for the most part have lots of time for development. I haven't had a problem with any of them. Even the side characters are treated pretty well. Of course, the main cast is where the characters really shine, but the side cast isn't bad to be honest. Next, it is time to talk about the themes. I think the three biggest themes to come out of kubera are being a victim, family, and sacrifice. Essentially, everyone in Kubera is a victim in some way. However, Leez is more so than the others, she's often thought of as the biggest victim in the series, foreshadowed by the card asha was shown. Family is another important theme as it one of the biggest motivation for some people. Gandharva, Yuta, and Maruna for instance, are heavily motivated by familial ties. The last theme I feel the need to talk about(trust me there are more) is sacrifice. The whole entire world of Kubera is influenced by sacrifice. Gods are doing it, sura's are doing it, even humans are doing it. Yes there are people who are against it, but they are basically powerless to fight it. Now I think I've covered what makes Kubera so great mainly, the story, the themes conveyed as well as the characters. Not gonna go too in detail but power system is also solid, as well as the world that exists within Kubera. Now for the flaws I have with this series. The first one is the pacing. Now, the pacing isn't initially bad at first, but it does kind of show in part 2. A huge portion at the beginning of part 3 had pacing problems as well. However, once it gets going it's forgiven. The last problem I have with the series is the art. It is not that great in seasons 1 and 2. Season 3 definitely improves though. I think I've covered most of what I want to say here. So if you like powerful dialogue, complex characters, a good world, lore, amazing foreshadowing, and great themes definitely peep Kubera! It is not a perfect masterpiece just yet. But it is ridiculously close to being one. Easily the best weekly ongoing series I am currently reading. Also forgot to mention this but Kubera is mainly a fantasy, it isn't action oriented, so if your looking for an action series this probably isn't for you. Anyway, hope you liked my review, thank you.AdmiralJackOff
98/100To summarize, Kubera is a masterpiece of a story with amazing worldbuilding and character depth.Continue on AniListKubera was a manhwa I started reading by chance, and my expectations for it were pretty low considering the fact that it's relatively unheard of as compared to other popular fantasy manhwa. It's genre officially is Fantasy/Romance, however, it has far more to offer even for fans of other genres. It has 3 seasons, season 1 being 100 chapters long, season 2 containing 180 chapters and season 3, still ongoing as I write this review, has over 300 chapters
Kubera starts off as a more light hearted action story (although the plot at the time seemed to be about revenge), with somewhat generic comedy. Season 1 was relatively unimpressive, although it consistently got better as more characters were slowly introduced and the depths of the characters increased. I will not elaborate as it would be better for you to experience it yourself as a reader
Season 2 continued with the same pace and quality that season 1 ended with, with slightly improved art. Season 2, like the previous season got better and immersive as the story went on and the cast grew and deepened. However, about 100 chapters into the second season, something started to seem off about one major characters. These feelings of uncertainty were proven right and eventually led to one of the best plot twists around the 150th chapter of the 2nd season. Suddenly the "humor" of the first 200 chapters did not feel humorous anymore, and the entire theme of the story became dark and treacherous. Suddenly, the story had become a lot better and season 2 finished on a cliffhanger of sorts, leaving the readers in anticipation for season 3.
The start of season 3 was immediately different from the other two, the positive vibe was nowhere to be seen, and the entire world just looked dark and gloomy. The art also had a massive improvement, leasing us to be able to immerse ourselves into the story more easily. As it was the final season, more of the story and world is revealed, with a large increase in the number of important characters. Pieces of lore and story were gradually revealed, each fitting into the large jigsaw that is the story of Kubera. As the story progressed, different characters make journeys through the world and they gradually understand the different events around them as they grow as people as well as in strength. The motivations of all the parties involved also become clear and even to the viewers, it is difficult to label many of the characters as good or evil. So far, as I'm writing this review, the story isn't complete and may not even be very close to completion, and so I will not make any comments regarding the ending
The story has 10 Main characters. They are:
- Kubera Leez: A 16 year old girl (in seasons 1 and 2) who wishes for revenge against the sura who killed her mother and destroyed her village. She is the protagonist
- Asha Rahiro: A genius magician who protects Leez from the suras.
- Gandharva: A highest ranked sura who is the mastermind behind the destruction of Leez's village
- Maruna: The high ranked sura who destroyed Leez's village
- Brillith Ruin: The priestess of Atera city and Agni's summoner
- Agni: The God of fire
- Kubera: The God of the Earth whom Leez was named after
- Sagara: A highest ranking sura who attacks the human cities
- Yuta: A high ranking sura wandering the human realm searching for his siblings
- Ran Sairoffe: A quarter from Mistyshore city trying to become a magician
One must also mention, that while the story is officially classified as a Fantasy/Romance manhwa, the romance in the story is quite lacking, as no romantic developments occur for a large part of the story, and when they do, they aren't in the focus of the story for very long. Kubera would appeal more to fans of Tragedy and Revenge, and to those who who love stories with expansive, immersive world building with a lot of plot and characters in it.
Overall I cannot help but give this story an extremely high rating.
While I would love to give it a 10/10, I must be more objective here so I will give it a 9.8/10
The only place one could say it was slightly lacking was in the art of seasons 1 and 2. Although i did mention that the story was relatively more unimpressive in the first part, it isn't a reason to rate the story any lower as a large part of it was intentional, just to make the twist near the end of season 2 even more shocking, and to make the sudden change in the story's atmosphere much more hard-hitting.I really do hope that some of you give this story a try after reading this review.
Thank you for reading
