97/100A good romcom that isn't wishy-washy with its development and charactersContinue on AniListThis manga is perhaps one of my favorite romcoms out there, i would like to call it a underrated but it would fall flat in regards of that knowing how many people actually enjoyed it, but this is not a circlejerk and i like to be fair with the manga that i love and why should you, the viewer give it a chance
The story is rather simple, the MC discovers that the cool beauty of his school that he is in love with is actually a vampire while trying to confess his love to her, he of course being the
foolnice person he is, he safeguards the secret and tries to help her not be discovered, fair enough you might say but then little by little the main character finds out that the particular school he is in has... a lot of weirdos, that's basically it, there's really no overarching plot or anything like that... upto a point. This manga suffers from something called "mood whiplash", several moments where everything is rather light and they throw you a curveball on the story and then all of a sudden you want to know more, of course... not everything is good and dandy, the story can be rather slow at the beginning and will totally be a turn off for people but my recommendation for this? just keep reading till you get to the principal of the school, she is one of the best part of this manga and highlights how funny it can get, which brings me to my next point, the comedy.
As comedy is rather subjective i can't really tell you if you might like it or not, but i can say for sure that i almost pissed myself laughing at this manga, the comedy relies on different aspects, one of them being the art, if you have seen grandblue then you might be reminded of it, the usage of silly/weird faces is an staple of this manga and it shows a lot while also giving contrasting tones on how the mood is, but it can be tiring at times which is completely fair, one thing about this is the repetition, certain gags will get repeated at times but let me tell you, the gags are the best thing about it it it may also lean into the "straight man" comedy in which there's only one sane person in the whole manga a.k.a the protagonist which is not the favorite genre for everyone.
The characters are one of the backbones of this manga, everyone gets development along the way in a surprising fashion as there's a good quantity of them, normally speaking you would think that with the lenght of thiis manga they wouldn't dare to pick a girl for the protagonist until the very end, well i have a rather nice surprise for you buddy, the romance and how much it affects other love interests gets explored, if i were to pick my favorite character it would be the principal she is one of the few characters that certainly elevates this manga a lot in terms of comedy and overall silliness, in general the flavor or the weirdness of them will charm you as a viewer and it tries to make as relatable as possible.
The art is perhaps one of the greatest roadblocks of this manga, as art is subjective you might not care but this is perhaps one of the things it gets criticized the most, the initial art is rough, it tries to be semi-realistic but almost all of the characters end up being kinda of off, this is somewhat fixed later on and almost everyone ends up with less rough edges which works for the comedy aspect and it apparent by how much i enjoyed it.
The last arc and ending is perhaps one of the best things about this story and i am delighted to be one of the few people that saw it end when it did and with that out of the way i can honestly tell you i recommend this story and i personally have ti among my best reads of all times.

95/100A surprisingly hilarious high school harem romcom involving monsters, aliens, and... time travel? What is this manga?!Continue on AniListJitsu wa Watashi wa (Translated as Actually I Am, and titled in English as My Monster Secret: Actually, I Am…), is a Manga series written and illustrated by Eiji Masuda. It was published by Akita Shoten in Weekly Shōnen Champion and ran from January 2013 – February 2017. It has been collected into 22 volumes, with Seven Seas Entertainment translating and publishing it under the name My Monster Secret in North America starting in 2016. It has also been adapted into an anime, but I’m going to stick with the manga here.
I absolutely love this series, and I firmly believe there is no reason for it to be as good as it is. It hits some serious “No I’m not interested in that” before even starting:
- It’s set in a high school
- It’s a romcom
- It’s a harem manga
- It’s impossible to explain without making it sound like either you or the mangaka are on all of the drugs.
Combine these things and you normally enter into the world of pure and utter trash, and to me is the stereotype for what people think of when they think of "everything wrong with manga and anime". It feels like there are at least a few dozen of them published in both manga and anime every year, and normally if you want to read "the good stuff" the industry has to offer you avoid this concoction like the absolute plague.
And then you get to the characters involved:- The main protagonist: A high schooler who can’t keep a secret (his nickname is literally ‘leaky basket’)
- The main girl: A “beautiful and mysterious” vampire, who is dense as hell.
- A 6 inch tall alien girl, who pilots a robot that passes as a human.
- The main protagonist’s best childhood friend, a girl who bullies the main protagonist (and everyone else) to no end and is journalist looking to publish all the secrets and rumors she can find.
- There's also a demon girl, a werewolf girl, a couple time traveling girls, an angel who thinks she's a demon, and so on and so forth, and it gets ever more absurd and hilarious with each additional character.
All of these characters are trying to keep their ‘secret’ hidden from everyone else, and pass off as ‘normal people’. To varying degrees of comedic success. As I said, it absolutely should not work. And yet… somehow it all works so well. By no means is it some kind of super deep or complex story. It knows what it is, and doesn't try to be anything different. The shenanigans are hilarious, the romance is cute and grows organically, there are some deeply emotional moments near the end, and all the wild disparate elements somehow coalesce neatly into a wholesome and heartwarming conclusion.
The biggest downside of the manga to me is the art. It is very clearly dated and of a style that isn't very popular at all anymore. It did grow on me, and I think it added to the overall charm of the series. I know some people have looked at it and passed by, leaving it as something of a hidden treasure to those who do start reading.
