55/100The relationships of three women intertwine to create a story full of romance and drama.Continue on AniListPlease note This review is all subjective and my own personal opinion. You do not have to agree with it, nor am I asking you to. I hope that this just helps you get an idea of what the manhwa I am talking about is like and form a basic and general consensus on it. The ratings I give anime and manga are mostly my personal overall enjoyment. This review may contain some spoilers, but all of them will be hidden using the spoiler tag. There will be some images sourced from the manhwa, but they should not contain any major spoilers. TL;DR will be at the bottom. Warning __This manhwa contains a lot of sexually explicit content. This review will go into some detail on it.__ Introduction What Does the Fox Say, a manhwa written and illustrated by Team Gaji presents the story of three women, how their relationships intertwine and the drama that unfolds from it. With a love triangle forming, who will end up together in the very end?
Plot and Romance As the synopsis says, a lot of the plot is around how the relationship of the main three characters intertwine and the inevitable predicaments that unfolds from it. With Ju Seong Ji as a new arrival in the office, this poses a challenge to the relationship between Baek Se-Ju and Seong Su-Min. What plays out in each chapter can vary from being simple time together, to the intense drama that occurs. The plot had romance, drama and sex all intertwined. Whilst what happens in each chapter individually is not hard to follow, when put together things can get a bit more difficult.
That brings me to my first point of criticism. The plot gets messy. Quite messy. Like I said earlier, what happens in each chapter individually is not difficult to follow. However what happens in the overall scheme of things constantly changes, swinging back and forth. It keeps jumping across being in a relationship and not, cheating and not cheating. It rarely stays still, and not for a good reason. I found it hard to follow sometimes and it was quite disengaging for me. The plot itself is not terrible, in fact there were some nice moments. It was more so the fact on how it was executed.
Another important aspect to discuss about this manhwa is the romance. The romance in this was not that bad, it just had a lot of potential to be better. It is possible if the plot stayed in place for longer, i.e. the relationship was steady for a while it may have been better. I did like seeing the main characters together in a good relationship. The fact that there was constant 'cheating' and breakups did not help. There are some other things but I do not know how to put it into words. The relationship between Su-Min and Seong Ji took too long to get properly started for my liking, taking until around chapter 23 to properly get started. I guess you could say the pacing was dragged out. For 90 or so chapters for the main story, it did not feel like much happened.
Development wise the plot was okay. I cannot think of much to say for it, really. There were some surprise twists here and there, but some of them felt quite odd.
Despite this manga not being a comedy, it managed to make me laugh, whether it was intending to or not. It had some funny moments occasionally that made the reading experience a little more light hearted in a sometimes quite serious story.
Characters A large aspect of this manhwa are the three main female characters.
__Seong Ji, the new arrival to the company, turns a lot of heads.__ Her stunning appearance gets a lot of attention, with some even mistaking her for a foreigner. I am not too sure on how to describe Seong Ji, I struggle to come up with words to describe her personality. It is not that she is a bland character, it is just I have no idea how to put it into words. I suppose she is usually upbeat and kind. Her character is nothing special, but can still be entertaining enough to read. She really shines when she is with Su-Min.
__Su-Min is one of the three main characters.__ Su-Min's relationships between Seong Ji and Se-Ju is a vital part of the manhwa, and she is at the centre of it all. She is the team leader of the company Seong Ji works at, and she clearly possesses the skill to lead a team. Her usual calm demeanour is seldom broken, but there are a few moments where it breaks. Similarly to Seong Ji, her character shines when it comes to her relationship with the other two main characters. She is not boring by herself, but she is more interesting when she is with those two. Most of the time she is with either one of them anyway.
__Finally, there is Se-Ju.__ Whilst she may have been my least liked character of the three, she is one of the most intriguing. She gives off a cheerful and bubbly personality, but on the inside she holds a more sinister personality. This in turn made her one of the more engrossing characters.
Each character on their own may not be that interesting, but what makes them much more so is the relationship they share together. Su-Min often finds herself in trysts with other women, but she always ends up going back to Se-Ju. Se-Ju on the other hand does everything she can to keep it that way. With the introduction of Seong Ji, this cycle is threatened to be broken. This obsessive relationship and it reaching breaking point is one aspect of the manhwa that has potential to draw readers in.
Other than the three mentioned above there is not that many other characters of interest. There are other side characters that make prominent appearances throughout the manhwa but there is not much to say about them. The side characters are okay, but they are easily overshadowed by the main three. It is clear that the author wanted to focus on the main three, giving them most of the lime light.
Sexual content You should expect a lot of sexual yuri content in this manhwa, as there is a lot. It was likely what this manhwa was aiming for, to cater to an audience who wants to have that kind of content.
In the beginning of the manhwa, there is a high concentration of sex scenes, perhaps more so than the rest of the manhwa. Most of these scenes are between Se-Ju and Su-Min. The reason that this may have been done was to show the relationship between the two. But in my personal opinion, there was too much of it, implemented for no reason other than fan service. If it was put in for fan service, it probably did well on that regard. But at the rate it was being shown it may become a little tedious. Later on the sexual content is cut down a little.
As for the sex scenes themselves, well I am not able to give much criticism on it, but I think they were drawn pretty well. I think readers looking for that kind of content will not be disappointed.
There were some cases that the sexual content was implemented well into the story, whether to show progress in a relationship or to reinforce the character's love for each other.
One thing I should say is that at the beginning when I was reading What Does the Fox Say I was waiting for Seong Ji and Su-Min to engage in sexual intercourse. I knew it was coming, and I was anticipating it, drawing me in. It took a little while for it to happen, taking 42 chapters.
It should be worth noting that I am not one for this kind of stuff. Whilst I may have not enjoyed this aspect of the manhwa, I can imagine other people will very easily. Perhaps it is what draws some to this manhwa. It you like sexual yuri content, then perhaps this manhwa is for you.
Art Perhaps due to this manhwa targeting a more mature audience, the art style is more mature. This mature art style depicts the characters in a nice manner and effectively conveys their emotions and expressions.
This manhwa is in full colour, with each scene having a wide array of pigments. Settings are not usually given much detail, with most of it instead going to the characters. This in effect draws more attention to the characters instead of the background.
On another note the main story actually concludes at 93 or so chapters. The chapters after that are side stories, each giving either more backstory or more content on what happened after the ending. It also provides a more complete ending. I found these side stories to be decent and I liked the better ending it was able to provide.
Conclusion and TL;DR After seeing a decently high score and people expressing their love for this work, I think I ended up going in with too high expectations. I wanted to enjoy this, but I was unable to. It felt like a drag and I was relieved to finish it. In the end, this manhwa was not something for me. It did not cater to me, but it can certainly cater to others. I have seen others highly praise this work, and I can see why. It has some pretty good points to it. Despite my somewhat low score, this manhwa is not bad. Far from it. It was simply something not to my tastes. If this manhwa has what you seek (yuri romance, sexual content, drama), then I can see this being a good read. To summarise my review:
- Most of the plot revolves around the relationships and drama between the three main characters.
- The plot quickly becomes very messy, jumping from cheating and being in a stable relationship. It had some odd twists in-between too.
- Romance that had promise, but ultimately could not reach its full potential. Still, it was not bad, it was an engaging part of the manhwa.
- There were some nice comedic moments intertwined within the serious story.
- The main three had intriguing and engrossing relationships between each other.
- With a lot of sexual content, it may appeal to a certain demographic of readers. It was sometimes implemented meaningfully into the story.
- This manhwa has a more mature art style, choosing to focus on the characters instead of the setting, effectively conveying their expressions and emotions.
That brings us to the end of the review. I did ramble on in some places and go off, so I apologise if I talked too much.
